Hi everyone,
It's your monthly email - the March GLAMout will be next Friday! Please tune in at 12pm-1pm Pacific Time (3pm-4pm ET | 19-20h UTC). Right now the agenda is wide open and I encourage anyone who has something to share to sign up, and also volunteer to run the GLAMout if you're inclined (I'm available if no one else is but would also be fine with turning it over to someone else).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/GLAMout/2014/March
What is the GLAMout? It's a monthly online video-chat (using Google+ Hangouts) where cultural professionals, Wikimedians, or any interested parties can learn and chat about GLAM activities. The GLAMout is currently hosted by the GLAM-Wiki US Consortium. While the Google Hangout is limited to those presenting, anyone is welcome to view on YouTube.
Thanks and hope to see you online!

Magnus' blog post today is a must-read for anyone in the GLAM community who
wants to understand why analytics has been such a challenge for us:
http://magnusmanske.de/wordpress/?p=173
Quoting the last three paragraphs in full:
[...]
Like others, I have tried to get the Foundation to provide the page view
> data in a more accessible and local (as in toolserver/Labs) way. Like
> others, I failed. The last iteration was a video meeting with the Analytics
> team (newly restarted, as the previous Analytics team didn't really work
> out for a reason; I didn't inquire too deeply), which ended with a promise
> to get this done Real Soon Now(tm), and the generous offer to use the page
> view data from their hadoop cluster. Except the cluster turned out to be
> empty; I then was encouraged to import the view data myself. (No, this is
> not a joke. I have the emails to prove it.) As much as I enjoy working with
> and around the Wikiverse, I do have neither the time, the bandwidth, nor
> the inclination to do your paid jobs for you, thank you very much.
>
As the sophisticated reader might have picked up at this point, the entire
> topic is rather frustrating for myself and others, and being unable to
> offer a patchy, error-prone data set to GLAMs who have released hundreds of
> thousands of files under a free license into Commons is, quite frankly,
> disgraceful. The requirement for the Foundation is not unreasonable;
> providing what Henrik has been doing for years on his own would be quite
> sufficient. Not even that is required; myself and others have volunteered
> to write interfaces if the back-end data is provided in a usable form.
>
Of the tools I try to provide in the GLAM realm, some don't really work at
> the moment due to the constraints described above; some work so-so, kept
> running with a significant amount of manual fixing. Adding 100.000 Wellcome
> Trust images may be enough for them to come to a grinding halt. And when
> all the institutions who so graciously have contributed free content to the
> Wikiverse come a-running, I will make it perfectly clear that there is only
> the Foundation to blame.
And as many of have said before, thanks to Magnus for doing as much as he
has been able to within current circumstances.

Apologies for cross posting!
Hi all - please spread the word about the event below:
After the success of last year's Ada Lovelace Festival of Wikipedia Edinburgh<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women%27s_History/Ada_L…> event, the British Computing Society Women's chapter in Edinburgh are excited to host a follow-up editathon as part of the Women who Shaped Scotland project. Organised by the National Library of Scotland and Wikimedia UK, the project consists of a series of editathons run during March 2014, aiming to improve Wikipedia's coverage of influential Scottish women in a variety of professions.
On 21 March, BCS Women Edinburgh will host an editathon on Scottish Women in Computing at the University of Edinburgh. The event will look to add and improve information about Scottish women who have made a significant impact in the field of computing<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computing>, including computer engineering, software engineering, computer science, information systems, and information technology. The evening will include training for those who aren't already familiar with Wikipedia, and there will be refreshments provided.
Details are available on the events page: https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Edinburgh_Women_in_Computing_editathon_2014
Spaces are limited so book soon!

Please feel free to share the information with anyone who might be interested: http://www.sla-europe.org/2014/02/12/tuesday-4th-march-do-you-have-the-fact…

Hi everyone,
The February GLAMout is now available on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8szdHJkF928
For right now these are mostly under my YouTube account - if someone has the time and energy to move them somewhere else, please let me know (as long as it doesn't take a lot on my end!). I know there's a "better" way to share these, but my energy seems best spent in organizing and executing, not in follow up! I enjoy these conversations very much as a way to hear what is happening in the GLAM US Wiki community, which it turns out is quite a bit!

This month is a little more organized and I actually have a YouTube link to share ahead of time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8szdHJkF928 You can use the #glamwiki hashtag on Twitter or the Q&A tool in YouTube (which I believe should be available once the event starts).
Thanks and hope to see you online!

I imagine some of you may have seen that the Wellcome Library announced yesterday [1] that they have made over 100,000 high resolution images of manuscripts, paintings, etchings, early photography, and advertisements available using a CC-BY license. I was wondering [2] if it is ok to upload CC-BY images to the Commons.
This is mostly in theory since the downloads are sitting behind reCAPTCHAs and several levels of click throughs — but you never know :-)
