Hello All,
To better understand the perspectives of individuals in the Wikimedia
community who have experienced harassment, Wikimedia Foundation researched
our community members’ knowledge of, and comfort with, existing enforcement
and reporting processes.
An executive summary of the research report is now available on Meta. <

Hi all,
After calculating and validating the results, the organizers of WikiGap
Challenge 2021 have now published the results and winners! You can read
more here:
https://diff.wikimedia.org/2021/06/04/this-is-the-winner-of-wikigap-challen…
In short, the user Tuga1143 received the most points in the challenge,
after having created or improved 429 articles in Portuguese! Kushared and
Armineaghayan shared the first place for the newly launched "Best Article"
challenge, focusing on qualitative improvements; Kushared for their article
on Frida Kahlo in Kurdish Sorani, and Armineaghayan for their article on
Vera Kholodnaya in Armenian. You can see these and more results here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Results
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Results>
In total, almost 100 participants registered, and created or improved 2,940
articles! We got help from the UN Human Rights office to propose a list of
29 women human rights defenders
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/List> that yielded bonus
points. The WikiGap Challenge resulted in 337 articles about these women,
in 30 different languages!
Thanks to all the participants, for making a substantial impact on
Wikipedia, and congratulations to the winners!
Best,

Hey folks! it's been a while.
The Gendergap mailing list just got migrated to Mailman 3, which means I
now have my admin access back (I'd lost access to the previous system and
hadn't had a chance to restore it for... several years.)
The list had been set to new posters being moderated, which resulted in a
number of messages being caught and I wasn't able to release them.
Unfortunately those messages didn't survive the migration, but I've
adjusted the moderation settings and going forward new messages should go
through.
I've adjusted the list description to be a bit more concise: it is now
"Addressing gender equity and exploring ways to increase gender diversity
in Wikimedia projects."
This part is sad, but as a heads up and for transparency's sake:
I also went ahead and removed Kevin as an Owner/Moderator of the list as I
don't know who now controls his former email accounts. For those who had
missed his passing, there is a lovely tribute to his life and work on the
Signpost:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2016-08-04/Obitu…
Hope that everyone has been keeping well through this difficult time, and I
look forward to seeing more activity on this list in the future with the
new Mailman migration.
All the best,
-Leigh

Dear friends and Wikimedians,
(apologies for cross-posting!)
The Community Resources team announced in January the intention and process
to review its current grants programs (Annual Plan Grants, Simple Annual
Plan Grants, Project Grants and Rapid Grants) to ensure we are aligning
with the strategic direction of the Wikimedia movement, with a focus on
knowledge equity and building a thriving movement[1][2].
Now that we have finished our needs review, key stakeholders discussions,
community brainstorms, and grantee surveys, we are excited to share with
you the draft proposal[3] that has resulted from this work:
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Resources/Grants_Strategy_Relaunc…
>
We are requesting your feedback on how the proposed grant programs would
impact you and how well they align with our movement strategy, which can be
provided in the following ways [4]:
* Complete a feedback form
* Participate in office hours
* Discuss on-wiki
* E-mail the Community Resources team (<communityresources(a)wikimedia.org>)
More information about these options can be found on our feedback page.[4]
After one month when the planned feedback period is over, the Community
Resources team will review all community input and make final adjustments
to complete the redesign. In April 2021, the Community Resources team will
review and incorporate suggested changes and send a final proposal for
endorsement and approval by the leadership of the Wikimedia Foundation.
Working with all our communities to update our grants programs is essential
to ensuring that they are useful and address real needs for our
communities. Thank you for all of the participation that has brought us to
this point. We look forward to the continued engagement in this next step
and listening to your ideas.
On behalf of the Community Resources team,
Chris

Hello,
(Apologies for cross-posting!)
The Community Resources team is inviting you to an exciting opportunity to
be a committee member as part of the grants programs' participatory
grantmaking practice.
Participatory grantmaking ensures that resourcing community efforts in the
movement is diverse, equal and inclusive. This practice aligns with
movement strategy recommendation 4. Ensure Equity in Decision-making:
Establishing shared responsibility and accountability for decision-making
and distribution of resources.
Serving committee members will have the opportunity to inform and advise
funding decisions and proactively share recommendations and mentorship to
support grantees worldwide in their development, growth, and sustainability
strategies; that contribute to a world in which every single human being
can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
You will also strengthen your capacity in participatory decision-making
processes while learning about our community's incredible work and the
different contexts that influence their work.
Here is statement by current committee member, Thepwnco, on their
experience;
My experiences with Wikimedia Foundation grant programs have been very
rewarding and I feel so fortunate to have served as a volunteer committee
member since 2014. Grant programs contribute to equity and sustainability
in our movement through funding unmet and under-resourced needs. Under our
participatory approach to grantmaking, volunteers play a key role in
decision-making. Volunteers also help support and strengthen community-led
initiatives by reviewing grant proposals for impact and providing feedback
and other support to prospective grantees. But being a volunteer committee
member is much more than just a way to share your knowledge and insights,
it’s also an incredible opportunity to learn and be inspired by the breadth
of amazing and innovative work taking place across the movement and in
diverse communities and regions.
Here are the committees that are currently soliciting new members:
* Project Grants: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project
** Project Grants Committee reviewing Community Organizing proposals: This
committee reviews proposals for projects that inspire and coordinate
volunteers, via campaigns, training, contests and other forms of community
organizing. You can learn more about Project Grants here:
** Project Grants Committee reviewing Research and Software proposals: This
committee reviews proposals for projects that create or maintain software
that supports the Wikimedia movement, or that conduct research to answer
questions important for Wikimedia communities and projects.
* Simple Annual Plan Grants:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Simple/About
** Simple APG Committee: This committee reviews proposals to fund a group
or organization's programs and operating expenses for 12 months. The groups
and organizations need to already have experience managing programs and
grant funding.
Orientation and training is provided for new members and you don’t have to
have previous experience to sign up.
Committee responsibilities include:
* Providing review and constructive feedback to help support applicants and
strengthen grant proposals
* Evaluating and recommending promising proposals for funding
* Helping recruit and spread the word about grants
* Optional: Becoming a project advisor for proposals that interest you
Eligibility requirements for committee members can be found here:
* Project Grants :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Committee/Eligibility#commit…
* Simple APG: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Simple/Committee
You can sign up as a candidate for a committee here:
* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Committee/Candidates
* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Simple/Committee/Candidates
Deadlines for submitting committee candidacy:
* Project Grants Committee reviewing Community Organizing proposals --
February 5, 2020
* Project Grants Committee reviewing Research and Software proposals --
March 5, 2020
* Simple APG Committee -- February 5, 2020
Please reach out to projectgrants(a)wikimedia.org for questions on the
Project Grants Committee and simple(a)wikimedia.org for questions on the
Simple APG Committee.

Hello Gender gap listserve,
Trying to lift up all the work that people on this listserve do, is a new
wikimedia-grant funded project humaniki <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Maximilianklein/humaniki>.
If you're familiar with Wikimedia biography gender-gap tracking tools WHGI
and Denelezh, this is the next iteration of those. The idea is to*
co-design this tool with editors*, and as such, it would be* amazing to
have gendergap editors take paid roles in the development*. There are two
contracts, one for a UX Researcher and one for a Frontend Software
Engineer. Please find the details of the roles below. And additionally on
that co-design theme, we are* interested in gathering feedback from this
community on what are the data needs of diversity-focused editors*. So if
you would be interested to chat with us on what features should go into
humaniki, please contact me as well.
*Role: Community UX Researcher*
Full Job Description:
https://notconfusing.com/images/Community_UX_Researcher.pdf
The role of community UX Researcher is to facilitate the co-design process
of creating humaniki. You will identify community groups with whom to
partner, elicit their product needs, and synthesize it into a design
specification. Liaising between the community and the humaniki engineering
team, in multiple rounds of development, you troubleshoot and make
decisions to ensure the tool is effective. Finally, you'll communicate the
project's development through blog posts, online trainings and other media.
*Role: Frontend Software Engineer*
Full Job Description:
https://notconfusing.com/images/Frontend_Software_Engineer.pdf
The role of the software engineer is to build the humaniki web-app in
collaboration with the backend engineer and UX researcher. After receiving
the design specification from our community UX researcher, you will give
input into the stack and architecture. You develop web and
data-visualization features to make them ready for user testing, as part of
an iterative development cycle. Supporting a launch of the tool, you
monitor and fix bugs to make sure the application is robust for users.
Make a great day,
Max Klein ‽ http://notconfusing.com/

The themes evoked are important to our gender gap projects, as they include discussion on the future code of conduct and how to promote a safe contributing environment.

Hello everyone,
In March, the Communications team at the Wikimedia Foundation is launching
a global social media campaign for Women’s History Month. The main goal of
this new campaign, starting March 5, is to share the Wikimedia movement’s
progress toward achieving greater gender equity, describe the challenges
that remain, and to invite others to participate in working toward greater
gender equity and representation in the movement.
As part of the campaign, we plan to highlight the amazing people and
initiatives that contribute to greater gender equity across the movement
via social media and the Wikimedia Foundation Medium account
<https://medium.com/freely-sharing-the-sum-of-all-knowledge?source=---------…>.
We are also creating a webpage on the Foundation's website that will
include community-created editing resources for new volunteers interested
in gender equity, as well as a list of events happening around the world
for Women’s History Month.
We would love to hear if you or your communities are running events or
projec*ts **related to gender equity this March* that we could highlight on
our website and social media accounts as part of the campaign.
If you have specific events that you are planning for Women’s History
Month, please email me off list with any relevant links to the event and we
can make sure that we include it on our webpage.
If you are interested in having your gender equity work highlighted on
social media by @Wikimedia channels, please fill out this short form
detailing your efforts and any associated accounts we should tag on social
media to help promote:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSchEZ_-8jCJP6E6UQguy_MjOYgoNUfSyzN…
We will be sharing more information on how to get involved in the campaign
(including a social media toolkit with draft messages, graphics, and
hashtags) soon. We will also be creating a page on Meta-Wiki with more
information about the campaign.
We look forward to hearing from you, thank you!
