Hi,
I've received some comments, criticisms, and questions re: a question on the survey in which I ask respondents to list 10 articles that they think are of most interest to females and least interest to males.
When there are no surveys in progress, I will lock the survey and edit/amend this question.
First, I will use woman rather than female and man rather than male. Second, I will explain why I've included this question.
Many scholars, theorists, and Wikipedians of all genders and sexes believe knowledge is gendered. Some Wikipedians argue that a consequence of the gender gap is a lack of coverage of certain topics; others argue that gender doesn't matter-that anyone can write about any topic.
I've asked this question (perhaps poorly!) to understand how the community perceives of and constructs the gender of certain topics. In no way did I intend to offend anyone or suggest that I believe men and women are or should be interested in different topics.
Thanks to all who have provided feedback. If you have any questions or comments (or criticisms!) please feel free to contact me.
Also, please note: One survey respondent stated the survey blanked an answer after the list wasn't provided. I see the answers to the final question (which asks for general feedback) even if other questions aren't answered. I'm not sure why it looks as though an answer has been blanked, but I'll look into it tonight!
Best,
Amanda / Mssemantics

I've just activated a survey re: the gender gap, primarily on the EN Wiki: https://jfe.qualtrics.com/form/SV_cILwYSqJB58SgFn
This survey is a part of ongoing research related to an IEG: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Women_and_Wikipedia
If you have 10-20 minutes, I would greatly appreciate your participation. Also, please feel free to share the link to the survey to editors of all sexes and genders who are not on this mailing list.
This survey is open to ALL editors who contribute to the English language Wikipedia. It does not require or record your user name or real name.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me via amending(a)uw.edu<mailto:amending@uw.edu> or reach out to User:Mssemantics.

*Emotions under Discussion: Gender, Status and Communication in
Wikipedia**By David
Laniado <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Sdivad>*: I will present a
large-scale analysis of emotional expression and communication style of
editors in Wikipedia discussions. The talk will focus especially on how
emotion and dialogue differ depending on the status, gender, and the
communication network of the about 12000 editors who have written at least
100 comments on the English Wikipedia's article talk pages. The analysis is
based on three different predefined lexicon-based methods for quantifying
emotions: ANEW, LIWC and SentiStrength. The results unveil significant
differences in the emotional expression and communication style of editors
according to their status and gender, and can help to address issues such
as gender gap and editor stagnation.
*Wikipedia as a socio-technical system**By Aaron Halfaker
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Halfak_(WMF)>*: Wikipedia is a
*socio-technical* system. In this presentation, I'll explain how the
integration of human collective behavior ("social") and information
technology ("technical") has lead to a phenomena that, while being
massively productive, is poorly understood due to lack of precedence. Based
on my work in this area, I'll describe five critical functions that
healthy, Wikipedia-like socio-technical systems must serve in order to
continue to function: allocation, regulation, quality control, community
management and reflection. Next I'll argue the Wikimedia Foundation's
analytics strategy currently focuses on outcomes related to a relatively
narrow aspect of system health and all but completely ignores productivity.
Finally, I'll conclude with an overview of three classes of new projects
that should provide critical opportunities to both practically and
academically understand the maintenance of Wikipedia's socio-technical
fitness.

Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated on October 14 this year.
Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (born in the year 1815) was a
mathematician and computer programmer who worked on Charles Babbage's
Analytical Engine. She foresaw how computers could evolve into devices that
perform tasks more sophisticated than simple calculations. She is
controversially credited with authoring the world's first computer
program, and certainly worked extensively with Babbage. [1]
Ada Lovelace Day celebrates women's contributions to science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics.
Wikimedia Commons, English Wikipedia, and Persian Wikipedia have designated
a watercolor portrait of Lovelace as a featured picture. [2]
Happy Ada Lovelace Day,
Pine

Hi, if you are in London this Saturday, you may enjoy taking part in
the first LGBT editathon in the UK.
Read more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_LGBT_studies/Editathons/…
The afternoon is being hosted at the historic Bishopsgate Library. The
library is known for hosting LGBT archives, including materials for
the UK Campaign for Homosexual Equality, a huge collection of early
LGBT literature, LGBT rights protest literature and materials, and Gay
News (later Gay Times) archives including original press photography.
You can come along to find out more about the LGBT archives, join us
in improving the content of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons better to
represent women active in LGBT+ history and culture, or thrash out
plans and projects for the global Wikimedia LGBT+ user group.
The editathon is part of a global initiative by the Wikimedia LGBT+
User Group to increase the quality of knowledge for LGBT topics on
Wikimedia projects.

"Polish town to have monument honoring Wikipedia"
The lack of anatomical precision did confuse me a bit as to whether male
or female. Others pointed out narrow hips and broad shoulders indicated
male. But this is Catholic Poland. Not Dutch Amsterdam or Venice Italy.
So of course they aren't going to show the explicit sexual details. /
Perhaps the Wikipedia Powers that Be could write a nice letter
explaining how they should have at least one woman in there? That would
be really great!/
Please let me know. I know WikiWomen's Collab is rather Englishlanguagey
but in the past I have tried to expand it beyond just that, so:
1) If you post about an event on this mailing list, I'll post it to the
Facebook/Twitter for WikiWomen's Collab
2) You can also send me links to the events/news/whatever with translations
in YOUR language AND in English so I can then send out Facebook and Twitter
posts in both languages to expand reach.
We also want to post photos to Facebook, so be sure to post your event
pictures up on Commons and send them to me so I can post them. People love
photos, and they tag their friends and share them...
Thanks,
Sarah
