Hi everyone,
Inspired by the work WikiProject women scientists has been doing - and
despite helping to found the project and doing many an event about women
scientists, art is my true love, and the only two good articles I have
under my belt are about artists...so...I decided to take some action :)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_artists
Help is needed in a few areas:
1) *Bot savvy Wikipedians:* Checking to see if I set up announcements,
assessment (using WP 1.0 bot), and JL-Bot for quality content correctly. No
action has happened yet, and I always am worried I set those things up
wrong.
2) *Help expand the worklist*
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_artists/Worklist
3) *Tag appropriate articles* with our template
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_artists#Templates
And once we get a workslist, we can start inviting people to join via the
template I made.
I am hoping to use this as a platform to experiment with women artist
contests, too.
Now, we just need to find some women artist-scientists so we can do some
cross-project collaborations :)

Stumbled across this tonight.

I have never seen that before!
"For example, as a general rule, girls named Tiffany and Alicia are almost
always hot. Girls named Bertha and Bessie... not so much."

(English version below)
Bonjour,
https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Thread:Portal_talk:Fr/De_la_traduction_des_g…
Cordialement,
Valentin
PS : Je viens de m’abonner à cette liste de diffusion pour poster ce
message, désolé si ce n’est pas le bon endroit pour le faire.
=======================
Hello,
I started last week to fix French translation of MediaWiki, trying to
respect grammatical gender if possible (the gender of the user is not
always available from translated messages, but I opened an issue about
it [1]), and displaying a neutral form otherwise.
[1] https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57076
As nobody reacted, I thought it was ok and resumed, but a talk thread
has been created to discuss it, and the consensus seems to be to revert
most of these changes.
I talked about it on IRC (#geekfeminism on freenode), and I have been
adviced to mention it here, to “have a few allies for the change”.
Here is the discussion that has been created:
https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Thread:Portal_talk:Fr/De_la_traduction_des_g…
Best regards,
Valentin
PS : I just subscribe to this mailing list to post this message, sorry
if it is not the right place to do it.

Hi everyone,
FYI, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation, Sue Gardner, is
participating in an "Ask Me Anything" on Reddit. It's on a women-centric
board, which is generally a safe and friendly space to participate (for
those of who you hate Reddit!).

Hope you'll join in!

Dear all,
In June this year, I attended the Info-Activism
Camp<https://camp2013.tacticaltech.org/>run by Tactical Technology, on
the theme of Evidence and Influence.
Following this, I was asked to contribute a piece on wikipedia's gender
gap, which has just been published:
https://micromag.evidenceandinfluence.org/article/listening-to-the-dogs-of-…
All comments welcome, ideally on the post itself, so that non-listers can
also follow any discussion that may emerge.
Many thanks in particular to Sue Gardner and Joseph Reagle, for their most
insightful blog posts, which are linked.
And there's lots of interesting stuff in the MicroMag on Gender and
Violence, in which this piece was published:

On *Monday 25th November 2013*, the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB)
will be hosting a Women in Science Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Cambridge - the
latest in a series of such events to celebrate the MRC’s Centenary.
*Would you like to learn how to edit Wikipedia? *
*Would you like to help improve the Wikipedia articles of your scientific
heroines?*
*Would you like to join the debate on women’s experiences in science and
how under-representation of women can be tackled?*
If so, this is the event for you!
There are 20 places available at the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon workshop (10.30
am - 6.00 pm) where participants will be taught how to edit Wikipedia and
will have access to resources from the MRC, the Royal Society, the Wellcome
Collection and the LMB in order to create and improve articles about
MRC-funded and other female scientists. The workshop is open to people who
are new to Wikipedia as well as experienced Wikipedia editors.
There are 200 places available for the Women in Science panel discussion
(1.00 - 2.30 pm), led by Mariann Bienz FRS from the LMB and Nicola Hannam
from the Science Council. Come along to discuss how women can be better
represented in science and hear how eminent female scientists' careers have
flourished.
Tea and cake will be served after the discussion.
Attendance is free, but booking through EventBrite is essential:

The Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network (DiXiT) offers
12 to early stage researchers (ESRs) for a
period of 3 years and 5 Marie Curie fellowships to experienced
researchers (ERs) for a period of 12 to 20 months.
Fellowships are now open for applications. For details visit:
http://dixit.uni-koeln.de/fellows.html
Please circulate widely!
About DiXiT:
DiXiT (Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network) is an
international network of high-profile institutions from the public and
the private sector that are actively involved in the creation and
publication of digital scholarly editions.
DiXiT offers a coordinated training and research programme for early
stage researchers and experienced researchers in the
multi-disciplinary skills, technologies, theories, and methods of
digital scholarly editing.
DiXiT is funded under Marie Curie Actions within the European
Commission's 7th Framework Programme and runs from September 2013
until August 2017.
For more information visit the DiXiT website:
http://dixit.uni-koeln.de
APPLICATION
Academic Requirements:
Early-Stage Researchers must be in the first 4 years of their research
careers and not yet have a doctoral degree. This is measured from the
date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them
to embark on a doctorate, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate
is envisaged.
Experienced Researchers must be in possession of a doctoral degree or
have at least 4 years of full-time equivalent research experience. At
the time of recruitment by the host organisation an experienced
researcher must also have less than 5 years of full-time equivalent
research experience.
It should be noted that an individual researcher may not be recruited
first as an ESR and subsequently as an ER in the same project.
Marie Curie ITN mobility requirement:
Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake
trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when
taking up their appointment. One general rule applies to the
appointment of researchers:
At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must
not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies,
etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months
in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are
not taken into account.
Application process:
Please note that applications from any qualified applicants,
regardless of gender, ethnicity or country of origin are welcome if
they meet the eligibility requirements.
Applicants should send their applications directly to the institution
hosting the desired fellowship. Applications for more than one post
are welcome – however, multiple applications should be indicated via
the obligatory DiXiT application form (which has to be submitted
separately from the application documents send to the hosting
institution).
Application deadline:
The deadline for applications is the 10th December 2013.
Please note that the four remaining ER fellowships will start at a
later date and the possibility of application will be announced
accordingly.
