Subject: [Wmfall] Wikipedia gender ratio visualized

Aside from the dataviz itself (which is nifty but uses a fairly small gender dataset), what I like about this project is the open data supply chain it illustrates:
(1) we publish raw data;
(2) a research team in Italy builds an API on top of our data;
(3) a dataviz expert in Buenos Aires tells a good story with data from the API
(4) we learn something about our community that we would have never produced by ourselves
A good reminder of the value of investing into APIs and well-documented data sources.
Dario

Hi,
Just wanted to point out this discussion. If you're not familiar with Quora, it's a question-and-answer site, which has generally done a good job of attracting intelligent and thoughtful participants. (The site sometimes requires you to make an account to see its content, but this question is fully visible without an account.)
Anyway, the question is:
Is online hate speech directed toward women escalating in recent years, or is it just being documented and talked about more?
http://www.quora.com/Internet-Culture/Is-online-hate-speech-directed-toward…
As I write this, there are two interesting answers; in addition, the more detailed version of the question has a number of interesting links.
Just thought list members might want to look at a related discussion in a different forum.

Don't forget, you can also add the category to any women you might know
who have Wikipedia articles and are Wikipedians.
Such as Sue or Valerie!

Up for deletion but easily will survive. But meanwhile, there are just
two of us there, and I just joined from my user page 3 minutes ago.
(Also added one of the user boxes.)

So a little thing women can do for positive effect. ;-)

Hi all,
The August edition of the Fellowship News is now available on meta-wiki:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fellowship_News
Project highlights in this issue include:
Dispute Resolution Project — Steven Zhang monitored a trial
implementing changes to the dispute resolution noticeboard on English
Wikipedia this month. An update on his findings is in the Wikipedia
Signpost this week.
Gender Gap Project — Sarah Stierch has started developing the first
phase of a new WikiWomen's Collaborative project, which seeks to
engage and inspire more women to edit using social media and clear
calls to action.
Help Pages Redesign Project — Peter Coombe has created three new
introductory tutorials for the English Wikipedia, covering
referencing, uploading images, and navigating Wikipedia. He also
released the write-up from this summer's in-person usability tests.
Small Wiki Editor Engagement Project — Tanvir Rahman has been building
new step-by-step help pages on Bangla Wikipedia. The help pages will
be connected into a portal page and the new help page system will be
piloted in September.
Teahouse Project — We've been working on improvements for hosts,
including a simplified new host creation process. HostBot was approved
for an extended trial to send out automated invites to new editors,
contributing to a 50% increase in guest participation.
If you're interested in learning more about any of these projects,
please come read about what Wikimedia fellows have been up to this
month!
Best wishes,

Hi everyone,
The Wikimedia Foundation's GLAM outreach coordinator Lori is seeking a
few volunteer MediaWiki developer/hackers to assist in an all day
workshop at the Museum Computer Network (MCN) conference. This is one of
the world's premier museum tech conferences, and is attended by folks
from GLAMs around the world (From the Museum of Modern Art to the Museum
of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa to the Van Gogh Museum ) and is
attended by a very very large amount of women =)
This is the workshop seeking assistance:
http://www.mcn.edu/2012/wikimedia-tech-workshop-bridging-gap
Wikimedians and hackers who volunteer for this will receive free one day
conference attendance!!! (and free coffee, snacks, soda, etc) (We'll
also buy you a drink after a long day of hacking fun :)
Please email me off list if you're interested or forward to anyone you
know who might have interest. One person has had to drop out of the
workshop and we're in need of additional help.
Thanks everyone,
Sarah

Hi everyone,
Related to a previous email, the Royal Society of London is hosting an
edit-a-thon to improve content about women in science on October 19.
http://royalsociety.org/events/2012/wikipedia-workshop/
There is also a presentation! What a cool opportunity - let's hope there
is a healthy showing of women Wikimedians at the event!

Hi all,
Daria Cybulska (at WMUK) and I are working on organising an event for Ada
Lovelace Day (16th October, though ours may fall on the 19th) -
http://findingada.com/about/ - "...an international day celebrating the
achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths".
We're modelling it on Sarah's "Women in Science" event at the Smithsonian
from earlier this year - which, by happy coincidence, was on almost the
same topic, so we get to crib shamelessly. ;-)
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Case_studies/Smithsonian_Institutio…
Has anyone run an event around Lovelace Day in the past? Is anyone else
thinking about doing so? We'd be interested to hear about it, if so...
Thanks,
- Andrew.
