Dear Wikipedia Colleagues,
I am delighted to let you know that the Catholic organization, Catholic Online, is using Wikipedia's information to detail the life of indigenous, Kateri Tekakwitha, a 17th Century woman who lived in North America. She is the first Native American to become a saint. I am delighted that Wikipedia provides informative and factual information to the world about this woman! There are great articles in the news media today about it, many obviously borrowing from Wikipedia to fill in the history. This is a victory for Wikipedia, the "World Brain."
Read more about: "Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha..." at:

Hi all,
If you're a student or staff at the University of Oxford, you might
like to know that they're organizing an editathon at the Radcliffe
Science Library on 26th October.
Building on the Royal Society event tomorrow, it's focusing on women in science:

If you've any questions, please let me know and I'll pass them on to
the organisers.

Hi everyone,
Just curious, are you familiar with this:
http://wikipatia.com/wikipatia_wiki_hypatia.html
It doesn't exist yet, and I've been following their tweets. Just curious
if anyone knows the wiki woman who is developing this :) (I'm also
curious if this will involve pulling content from Wikipedia to build the
wiki or if it'll be freshly written content, etc..)

Dear all,
It's Ada Lovelace Day on 16 October and it's most suitable for Wikimedia UK
to get involved. The day exists to celebrate the contributions of women in
the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As you may
know, Ada Lovelace is considered the first programmer, due to her work on
Charles Babbage's analytical engine. As such, she's someone we can very
much hold up as a role model. Wikimedia UK is organising a Women in Science
themed editing event for Ada Lovelace Day on* Friday 19 October* 2012 and
would like to invite you to attend!
We have organised a group 'Edit-a-thon' to improve Wikipedia articles about
women in science, held at the Royal Society's library, London, 2:30-6pm. We
had a very high response from the academic community, and we filled many
more spaces than expected! However, there are still a couple of places free
for people who would like to help train new contributors - please get in
touch if you are interested. There will also be opportunities to get
involved online, which we will publish at our Wikimedia UK event's
page<http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace_Day_2012>(see below).
Following the Edit-a-thon there will be an panel discussion with Uta Frith
from the Royal Society and other female scientists on women in science (the
focus will be much broader than just the representation of the topic on
Wikipedia). The panel discussion will take place from* 6:30pm - 8:00pm, *and
you are most welcome to attend - there are still free places available, so
please feel free to register here
*http://royalsociety.org/events/2012/wikipedia-workshop/*
Wikimedia UK also has a page for the event, which you can see here
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace_Day_2012
Hope to see many of you there.
Best,
Daria

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal last week reporting on a
longstanding war in Wikipedia:
Editors Won't Let It Be When It Comes to 'the' or 'The'
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444657804578048534112811590.h…

The Beatles once sang, "Have you heard the word is love?" In a Wikipedia
war raging around the group, the word is "the."
For some eight years, editors at the online encyclopedia have been debating
whether the article "the" should be uppercased when referring to the band.
Is it "the" Beatles or "The" Beatles?
[...]
Tina Vozick, who has been editing Wikipedia entries for six years, says
disputes have become more frequent over the years. She blames "an
overabundance of testosterone running around the pages."

There are now a couple of discussions related to the latter comment: one
on Jimbo's talk page (headed "Sexist comments made against male Wikipedians
in a national publication")
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jimbo_Wales#Sexist_comments_made_aga…
,
and one on Tina's talk page:

Unmasking Reddit’s Violentacrez, The Biggest Troll on the Web
https://gawker.com/5950981/
"One reason Violentacrez continued to occupy such a high-profile position on Reddit was of course his free speech rhetoric. But Violentacrez has historically had a close relationship with Reddit's staff, a fact far less well-known than his controversial behavior."
"For all his unpleasantness, they realized that Violentacrez was an excellent community moderator and could be counted on to keep the administrators abreast of any illegal content he came across."
Wow, it's like Wikipedia's civility vs. established editors dynamic but with more misogyny, homophobia and racism...

Hello,
Something very cool has begun to happen in Sweden. Since
the largest daily newspaper wrote about the Ada Lovelace editathon
(http://www.dn.se/ekonomi/svenska-wikipeida-skapar-dag-for-kvinnoartiklar),
we have seen a buzz in the social media.
A Swedish non-profit,
Rättviseförmedlingen (the Fairness Bureau), which is devoted to making
it easier for media to find female experts, have endorsed it
(http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151273255534750&set=a.361483174749…)ly),
which so far has been shared several dozen times on Facebook. That has
also inspired other to send out invites to women across the internet.
One example is this invite:
https://www.facebook.com/events/525660827448094/
It has been sent out to 4,500 persons, mostly women, and so far 593 have accepted the invitation.
Just
to give you some perspective: according to the statistics
(http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesWikipediansEditsGt5.htm), there are
about 800 active users (+5 edits) this month on Swedish Wikipedia. So,
potentially, women could out-edit men on that day!
Best wishes,
Lennart Guldbrandsson

We have an AfD nomination for 'List of celebrity hairdressers', on the basis that it is "trivial".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_celeb…
Can't remember the last time that a list article on baseball was nominated for deletion on the basis of triviality. Apparently, stereotypically masculine trivial things are fine but stereotypically feminine trivial things aren't.
Le sigh.
