Wikimedia & Libraries <libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, #1Lib1Ref general
list <1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello Librarians and library lovers,
>From January 15th to February 5th 2021 we will be joining together once
again to continue providing reliable and factual information to the world
through Wikipedia. You can participate in #1Lib1Ref by simply adding a
citation to Wikipedia's content to improve the quality and reliability for
the millions of users of the platform!
Since we are celebrating the “human” part of the Wikimedia movement for
Wikipedia 20: we are focused this year on how every single human (librarian
or archivist, reference professional, and scholar) can add one more
reference to Wikipedia. This year has highlighted how important Wikipedia’s
citations are for access to reliable and unbiased information. The
#1lib1ref campaign is a great way to strengthen Wikimedia community
relationships with the library, information and research professionals who
create that knowledge and share it with the world.
How can you engage?
We invite you to engage in three ways:
-
Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
Wikipedia.[1]
-
Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
or region.[2]
-
Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
world.[3]
In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities and
advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[4] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[5]
Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag
in your edit summary. This is very important for us to monitor the reach
and success of the initiative.
Please tell your library, researcher and knowledge-loving friends about
#1Lib1Ref in January. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more
reliable!
You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group.[6]

Dear friends,
Apologies for cross-posting.
In 2020, one of the worst health and economic crises in a generation has
fuelled new hope for collaboration and openness—no one can confront these
challenges alone. Urgency demands even greater accountability and
transparency in machine decision making, data sharing, and privacy.

Hello friends,
Wikidata is becoming too big to monitor individual data points
continuously. Additionally, keeping Wikidata’s data in sync with external
databases is hard and existing workflows are haphazard and one-off.
The Wikidata development team is interested in making it easier to compare
Wikidata’s data with other databases in order to flag mismatches so that
editors can more easily find and work on them.
We would love to talk to interested persons who've had some experience
working on reconciling mismatches between Wikidata and other databases, to
learn how you discover inconsistencies and the process you take to fix
them, to enable us to understand your needs in the context of your work. The
discussion will happen in English at a time depending on your availability.
If you’re interested in participating, please let me know and I will
contact you as soon as possible with the next steps. In case a call may be
difficult, we're also happy to receive your responses via text (I'll paste
the questions below).
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Thank you so much for your support,
--
*Questions:*
1. Would you like to give us an overview on how you work with the data
on Wikidata, specifically with a focus around comparing the data with other
databases?
2. How do you precisely detect the mismatches? Can you guide us through
the process? What kind of tools are you mainly using for comparing the data
or supporting your work in this area?
3. What are the valuable lessons that you learned or that you think we
should know about?
4. Given that there are many databases out there, how would you suggest
we prioritize and focus and why?
5. Is there any additional information (links, documentation, articles)
that you would like to share? Are there people/organizations that you would
suggest we reach out to?

Dear community members,
I write to invite you to the West African Strategy Meetup. The Meetup will be opened by Katherine Maher, the CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation. Other senior executives of the foundation will also be around to answer any questions we may have.
The Meetup will delve into the recommendations for the strategy process as listed here http://bit.ly/RecommendationsOnePager. Strategy design support staff will also be on ground to answer any questions. We will also discuss what is next for African communities concerning how to host your community prioritization events and joining the global events.
Why should you and your community members attend? The strategy process is important for African communities. Being part of implementing the recommendations in 2021 is a great opportunity for us to play an active role in shaping the movement's future and this preparatory call will help position us to participate effectively in the process.
There will be live interpretations to the major African languages during the Meetup, so please feel free to reach me (kayusyussuf(a)yahoo.com) if you are able to translate into a local language during the call or if you have a local community that will need language translation to fully participate.
Please see the meeting details below.Date: October 31st, 2020Time: 15:00 UTCVenue: ZoomMeeting link: bit.ly/WestAfricaStrategy2030
Please download the Zoom app and try to connect at least 10 minutes before 15:00 UTC.
Please share with your local networks and encourage them to attend so they understand the recommendations before you host your local prioritization events.
Thank you.
