Dear Wikimedians,
The Africa Narrative is seeking volunteer facilitators in Egypt (two
volunteers) and Senegal (two volunteers) for the AfroCreatives Wikiproject.
The AfroCreatives Wikiproject
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Africa_Narrative> aims to support and
mobilize creatives and professionals from the African creative sector, as
well as enthusiasts more broadly, to contribute and enhance knowledge on
Wikipedia about Africa’s creative economy. Its inaugural effort will target
the film sectors of Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal.
The Africa Narrative <https://www.theafricanarrative.org/> (TAN) is a
non-profit that develops singular, high-impact initiatives in support of
African creatives and the African cultural and creative industries with the
aim to strengthen capacity in the continent’s creative economy and the
global visibility of African cultural soft power.
All volunteers must have full professional proficiency in English. In
Senegal, they must have native or full professional proficiency in French;
in Egypt, they must have native or full professional proficiency in Arabic.
Volunteer facilitators should have a vast knowledge about Wikimedia
projects and experience with teaching new editors.
Interested participants may sign up on the project's Meta page. You may
also indicate your country and email if your Wikipedia account is not
associated with any email address.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Africa_Narrative/Volunteers
Feel free to share as well.
Thank you.

We wanted to share this project with African affiliates, and with African
Wikimedians generally.
This art exhibition includes several works by contemporary African artists,
and also draws on African cultural themes that could be better documented
on Wikipedia, while it is also connected to African-American history
specific to New York City.
As well as viewing the livestream, we'd also welcome people to join the
Discord channel for this edit-a-thon on the Wikimedia NYC server all month
long.
Thanks,
Richard

Hello everyone,
The Community Development team
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development> at the Wikimedia
Foundation is hosting our first ever community call on February 23, 2022
from 15:00 - 16:00 UTC on Zoom <https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/84302371758>.
The purpose of the community call is to provide a space for volunteers to
meet the Community Development team. The five-person Community Development
team is responsible for developing accessible opportunities for volunteers
to grow critical capacities and leadership skills for movement
sustainability and growth. The community call is also a shared space for
all volunteers to hear or speak about projects related to capacity building
& leadership development in the Wikimedia community.
Our first call, Meet the Community Development Team will include a sign up
sheet
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIiyAlq7uKBp4eqmnbyVr9Zmi3LBjCQgZ…>for
those who would like to speak for 5-10 minutes about their
individual/community capacity building work.
If you would simply like to attend and listen, join the Zoom link at the
scheduled call time, please find the link here
<https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/84302371758>.
Although the primary language of the call is English, we are committed to
providing simultaneous translation to the best of our ability. Please use
the same sign up sheet
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIiyAlq7uKBp4eqmnbyVr9Zmi3LBjCQgZ…>
to indicate your language preference so that we can best accommodate
translation support as needed.
Some may be asking, what is capacity building and why is the Community
Development team supporting this work?
What is capacity building? Capacity building is any activity aimed at
developing a skill or capability in others; it can take many forms, ranging
from formal training through online self-study courses to individual
mentorship.
The “Invest in Skill and Leadership Development”
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Recomme…>
recommendation of the 2030 Wikimedia Movement Strategy
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Recomme…>encourages
movement-wide capacity building as a necessity to achieve our strategic
commitment to Knowledge Equity. Capacity building has the ability to
encourage diversity, redistribute and share resources, welcome newcomers
and grow communities.
Community Development is launching this series to ensure we can hear
directly from volunteers who are interested in or who already are leading
capacity building work in their communities. This is one one way we plan to
create a space for direct conversations with volunteers about the different
contexts, challenges, and opportunities in capacity building across the
movement.
How do our projects relate to capacity building and leadership development?
Our team's portfolio is a curation of online and offline learning programs
and resources that aim to enable skill development and resilience in the
movement.
Some of our recent capacity building projects include the Wikilearn Online
Learning Pilot
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn>, Board of
Trustees Candidate toolkit
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/Candidate_Re…>and
the 2021 Wikimania Speaker Series
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/What_we_do>.
In order for us to continue building relevant curricula and programming, we
need to hear from the Wikimedia movement. Please visit the Community
Development team page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development> to learn more about
our capacity building and leadership development projects.

NB: Please help us share with your communities
Hello everyone,
As we are starting a new year, we hope that one of your goals for this year
is to help ensure representation and participation of your community in
very important discussions and processes such as elections, within the
Wikimedia Movement.
If yes, we are looking for you to serve as an Election Volunteer.
Election Volunteers should have a good understanding of their communities
and have interest in activism work. The facilitation team sees Election
Volunteers as doing the following:
1.
Promoting the upcoming board election in their communities’ channels
2.
Organizing discussions about the board election in their communities
3.
Translating Board Election messages for their communities
*If you want to be an Election Volunteer please sign up here:

Dear Wikimedians,
The Wikimedia Board of Trustees is preparing a call for feedback about the
upcoming Board Elections, from January 7 - February 10, 2022.
While details will be finalized the week before the call, we have confirmed
at least two questions that will be asked during this call for feedback:
- What is the best way to ensure fair representation of emerging
communities among the Board?
- What involvement should candidates have during the election?
While additional questions may be added, the Movement Strategy and
Governance team wants to provide time for community members and affiliates
to consider and prepare ideas on the above confirmed questions before the
call opens. You can find more information about this upcoming call for
feedback here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Board_of_Trustees/Call…>
.[1]
Reach out if you have any questions or concerns. The Movement Strategy and
Governance team will be minimally staffed until January 3. Please excuse
any delayed response during this time. We also recognize some community
members and affiliates are offline during the December holidays. We
apologize if our message has reached you while you are on holiday.
Best,
Zita
