Dear Wikimedians,
We are delighted to announce the maiden edition of WikiConference Nigeria,
the national conference of all Nigerian Wikimedians.
WikiConference Nigeria, organized by a group of Wikimedia affiliates in
Nigeria, will be held in Nigeria's capital Abuja from 12th to 15th
September, 2024.
The primary aim of the conference is to promote the growth and
sustainability of Wikimedia projects in Nigeria, strengthen the
relationship between various Wikimedia communities across the country,
foster collaboration and engender cross-affiliate projects. The conference
will also serve as a platform for capacity building, knowledge sharing and
give room for aligning strategic discussions of Wikimedians in Nigeria to
the Movement Strategy 2030.
We invite all Wikimedians and individuals interested in open knowledge to
join us for this maiden edition of the conference.
*Programs*
Do you want to present your work or project or run a workshop? The
organizing team will seek for proposals for presentations, capacity
building workshops as well as panel
discussions. The conference will offer a wide range of session styles and
flexible time slots. We will announce the details for Program submissions
soon.
*Travel scholarship*
To support participation, scholarships for domestic travel are available.
We will share the details for the scholarship application process soon.
*Volunteers for Conference Committees*
The conference organizing committee is looking for interested volunteers to
join the various committees of the conference including Scholarship,
Logistics, Communications, Program, and Partnership. The application is
open at https://bit.ly/wikinigeria-call-for-volunteers. The deadline for

Hello everyone,
We are happy to announce the WikiLearn course on how to upload and edit
files on Wikimedia Commons using OpenRefine. The course is available in
several languages:
- In English (original): OpenRefine for Wikimedia Commons: the basics
<https://learn.wiki/courses/course-v1:Wikimedia-Foundation+WMF_GLAM001+2023/…>
- In Spanish / Español*: OpenRefine para Wikimedia Commons: conceptos
básicos
<https://learn.wiki/courses/course-v1:Wikimedia-Foundation+WMF_GLAM001+2024_…>
- In French / Français*: OpenRefine pour Wikimedia Commons : les bases
<https://learn.wiki/courses/course-v1:Wikimedia-Foundation+WMF_GLAM001+2024_…>
- In Italian / Italiano: Introduzione all'uso di OpenRefine per
Wikimedia Commons
<https://learn.wiki/courses/course-v1:Wikimedia-Foundation+WMF_GLAM001+2024_…>
OpenRefine <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/OpenRefine> is a free
data-wrangling tool that can be used to process, manipulate, and clean
tabular (spreadsheet) data and connect it with knowledge bases, including
Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
This course was developed as part of the Wikimedia Foundation's training
and sustainability grant to OpenRefine
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OpenRefine/Training_2023-24> and
is suitable for Wikimedians, Wikimedia affiliate staff, and partners (e.g.
GLAM staff and Wikimedians in Residence).
This course can be easily translated into other languages (more about
the translation process here
<https://studio.learn.wiki/meta_translations/discover_courses/> and here
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tutorial_on_how_to_translate_course…>).
More translations are on the way, including Portuguese, which will be
launched soon.
All the versions of the course are available at any time for free. You only
need a Wikimedia account and the course can be followed at your own pace,
with computer-graded exercises. A certificate is awarded at the end and an
average of 6 to 8 hours is needed to complete the course. In addition, for
Wikimedians, we also provide a template for a badge, which you can add to
your user page on Meta-Wiki -- this is also at the end of the course.
Please, feel free to share this course and its translations with people who
speak these languages and who you think might be interested in learning
more about OpenRefine or Wikimedia Commons.
Best,
Giovanna
