This is to notify the African Wikimedians mailing list of a draft proposal we are working on at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Ghana_Editor_Study>
As part of the interventions to address the decreasing levels of participation in our community, this proposal intends to study a cross-section of Ghanaian Wikipedia editors to assess factors that influence their editing patterns and seek out possible ways to increase their activity.
All of your opinions and input are most welcome.

Hi friends
I will be travelling for the next three days so wanted to give you a
quick heads-up on the matter of communication.
*1) Portal page on Commons. *
It is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa
There is still work on it to do but a good part of the content is now
there.
Please pay attention to this page in particular:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2015/Local_eve…
Amongst the questions we got last year was a recurrent one from "non
wikipedians" (or newbies). What is going on in my country ?
I suggest that you add there any event you organize, with appropriate
links (to Facebook, your site, an email...)
Note that there is no reason this be limited to the financially
supported countries. If an individual (or a couple of individuals) want
to simply propose a "get together in a bar", that would be great as well
Heck... I think I will propose a "get together and have a drink" in a
bar in Marseille-France. I just need to ask my neighbour (from Cameroon)
to indicate me an appropriate place to do so ;)
Also, please consider adding here the names of those who would be
willing to be press contact for their country:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2015/Media#Pre…
*2) Website*
We are in the process of archiving last year website. It will still be
available, but at a new url.
The new website will then be set up. I will send an email later to
invite those who do not yet have access and want to send me their info
so that I can create an account for them.
*3) Leaflets, banners and such*
A designer has received the brief and has already worked on them. We
gave our feedback on the first iteration. I hope we will have the second
iteration soon.
We already agreed on the "color" set. Here is the basic mock-up for the
sticker (it will give an idea of the colors :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sticker02.pdf)
I'll post the second iteration as soon as we get it and hopefully this
will be the last one.
I posted here the text proposed on the poster and on the leaflet:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Africa#Text_on_p…
If you have suggestions, that is the right time to do it. If anyone want
to translate, that will be great
Of course, we will post the templates so that you can do your own
versions if desired (adding a user-group logo for example)
*4) Prizes*
We brainstormed and here is the result !
1st prize: a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 + An Africa-published book +
Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the participant
winning picture
2nd prize: US$300 Amazon gift + An Africa-published book + Mystery gifts
from the Wikimedia Store + print of the 2nd prize picture
3rd prize: US$200 Amazon gift + An Africa-published book + Mystery gifts
from the Wikimedia Store + print of the 3rd prize picture
Community Prize: US$200 Amazon gift voucher + An Africa-published book
+Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the Community Prize
and yes, you can communicate on those.
*5) Social media*
No change http://www.facebook.com/wikilovesafrica and
http://www.twitter.com/wikilovesafrica
Follow us... post... retweet... tell us about your own SM pages so that
we can share what you post as well.
Cheers
Flo
Dear Intrepid African Wikipedians
I NEED YOUR HELP!
I have pledged to start the #100wikidays [1] challenge. My challenge is aimed at ensuring the remarkable African women that the text books, news and history books have failed to celebrate are covered on Wikipedia.
Please tell me your nominations ... Which female and African (ancient, historical and modern) innovator, leader, academic, scientist, activist, artist inspire you? Who do you think should be celebrated … (please send me more than 1)
I get started on the 1st September. Looking forward to it!!
Oh, and feel free to be part of the challenge!!
warmest
Isla

Commons licenses".
/
Elles sont toutes deux disponibles ici:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Belgium_publications

Hi friends
We have finalized the list of financially supported countries.
As a reminder, our original Grant request was to support 10 countries.
WMF granted support to 8 countries.
We actually received 10 propositions. 8 were complete. 1 lacked a
budget. 1 was just a draft.
So it was a bit heartbreaking, but we decided to support 7 countries at
full amount. And to divide the last to support two countries at half
budget.
The countries supported at original amount are Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt,
Nigeria, Tanzania, Ivory Coast and Uganda.
The two countries supported at partial amount are Ghana and Cameroon.
Now... let's do it !!!!
I am not done yet, but the basic framework of the Commons portal is
ready. Check out
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa
Feel free to jump in and help !
(no translation yet please. Let's finalize the content first)
You can also check the list of current issues here :

Hello Wikimedians in Africa,
Great effort to have wiki Loves Africa 2015.
As it looks, there are already 11 proposals from some of the African
Countries, with that level of interest, i think it will reflect the
quality of the 2015 contest.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Africa#Proposals_from_countries_…
Looking forward to more involvement from Uganda.

Dear Wikipedians in Africa
We have sent this to many individuals, but we might have missed someone - excuse the cross posting if you get this twice.
A while back, Anthere and I sent a request for country proposal from teams across Africa to participate in the Wiki Loves Africa 2015 competition. We need you to upload this proposal by the 30th August. Do not send the proposal by email. Write it up on meta and add a link here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Africa#Proposals_from_countries_… <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Africa#Proposals_from_countries_…>
If you have already sent it, then thank you. We have uploaded it and linked it. Please check that it is there.
If you haven’t, and you do wish to be involved, please can you upload the proposal directly to META, and link to the page above. The competition starts on the 1st October, the last day we can accept proposals is the 30th August. The theme this year is Cultural Fashion and Adornment. It will be an exciting and interesting theme.
If you missed it, you can read the earlier email here:
Anthere and I are busy working with the WMF to get the grant proposal accepted - and are very interested in having new groups and countries on board! We would be very keen to consider you joining the group of sponsored volunteer groups, however this year we are wanting the teams to be proactive about their participation. Please see the information below that we sent out to last year’s organisers. If you would like to discuss these ideas among yourselves and get back to us by the end of this month, that would definitely give us an idea of who will be part of the project this year.
Anthere and I have applied to the WMF for Wiki Loves Africa 2015: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Africa_Centre/Wiki_Loves_Africa_… <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Africa_Centre/Wiki_Loves_Africa_…>
We would value your endorsement of the project here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Africa_Centre/Wiki_Loves_Africa_… <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/Africa_Centre/Wiki_Loves_Africa_…>
This time we are hoping that 10 countries will host events, and for this reason have tried to establish criteria for involvement so that it will be clear who can be part of the project.
If you and your groups are keen to be involved, this year we are going to choose the groups based on their engagement plan. The plan should consider the following:
a cohesive plan of events over the two months of the competition -
an event and communications budget that should not exceed the 820 USD (700 event, and 120 communication material) allocated to each country
a list of the core team members (including email addresses)
a list of possible partners and targets for local funding (in-kind or monetary)
an idea of how to encourage quality submissions, e.g. an alliance with local photography groups, etc.
For events, please consider the following:
a press launch, if you feel it is necessary
an event aimed at introducing Wikimedia projects to a new audience that could potentially contribute and add to the user group team - a hub, interest group, school/ university, etc.
a quality photography demonstration by a local photography group before a wikitakes event
a collaboration with local designers or fashion event, or fashion and adornment heritage institution.
I look forward to seeing your proposals posted up by the 30th August!!
warmest regards
Isla and Anthere
