Hello everyone,
In the spirit of Wikipedia's 22nd birthday celebrations, we at Open
Foundation West Africa reflected on our journey with Wikipedia on Friday,
20th January, 2023.
We had a good time listening to experiences from both old and new members
of our community. It was an exciting moment sharing stories and memorable
experiences with each other regarding our expeditions with Wikipedia.
Here's a link to watch how we celebrated Wikipedia at 22.

Dear all,
I am excited to announce that the 2023 Curationist Fellows Program and
Critics of Color Residency Applications are live!
As part of our mission to reimagine culture through a social-justice lens,
Curationist is proud to announce two upcoming opportunities that provide
direct support for research and writing on our platform: the 2023 Critics
of Color Residency and the Curationist Fellowship. *Applications for both
programs are now open until February 1. *
The Curationist Fellows Program
<https://curationist.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b3f65b8a3901b1b5920d…>
supports
community-based researchers, librarians, graduate students, and university
educators in incorporating cultural heritage resources into their existing
work. We especially encourage applicants from communities underrepresented
in the arts and culture field and applicants whose work may lack the
funding associated with large institutional settings.
The Critics of Color Residency
<https://curationist.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b3f65b8a3901b1b5920d…>
supports
writers of color interested in arts and cultural criticism. Participants
will draw on the Curationist archive and work with Curationist editors and
archivists to publish writing on our site. This residency is an exciting
opportunity for early to mid-career writers to engage with digital
collections and to have their voices expand and diversify cultural
discourse. The fellowship is generously supported by Critical Minded
<https://curationist.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6b3f65b8a3901b1b5920d…>
.
Residents and fellows may be based anywhere in the world. Each fellow or
resident will be awarded a 3,000 USD stipend over six months, and will
spend approximately 15 hours per month on remote research, writing, and
workshops. Full application details are available by clicking on the links
below.
For questions about the Critics of Color Residency or Curationist Fellowship,
please email curationist(a)mhzfoundation.org.
Visit Curatonist.org

So we discussed in length, in various places, the issue of IP blocking
[1, 2, 3]… let’s make sure everyone understand who actually operate in
the IP blocking : yes… you got it… stewards
which means that YOU will have the opportunity to possibly
1) candidate to be a steward <—— not simple
2) and soon… votes for the candidates <—— simple
3) and raise the usual topic of blocking proxies management, again <——
simple
[1] IP Block Exemption :

[2] No Open Proxies : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/No_open_proxies
[3] Unfair blocking :

Hello everyone,
I am pleased to announce the Steward Elections 2023 [1]. We are now
taking nominations from eligible candidates. Interested candidates can
check their eligibility and the procedure to submit the nomination on
the guidelines page [2]. We are open to candidate submissions until
January 30, 2023, 23:59 (UTC).
Please remember, the voting has not yet begun and will not until
February 6, 2023, 21:00 (UTC). We will remind you once again when the
voting starts. As always, the confirmation of existing stewards [3] will
take place at the same time as the Stewards Elections (starting February
6, 2023, 21:00 (UTC)).
If you have any questions regarding the elections, feel free to contact
me or any other member of the Election Committee [4]. You can also ask
any question in the #wikimedia-stewards-elections-chat IRC channel, or
watch updates in #wikimedia-stewards-elections.

Hi everybody
at Swahili Wikipedia we have seen changes to our appearance which were
caused by action of a "Wikimedia Foundation Web team", without our own
consent. We discussed it in the community and by unanominous vote
decided to go back to the previous format. (see
https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Jumuiya#Muonekano_mpya_wa_kurasa_ze…!)
The main reason was that we have a number of Swahili help pages which
refer to the position of items on the screen and these we would have to
rewrite. As our present active team is too small, we presently do not
have the editing power to do that work.
We asked the people who brought the change to set us back, and they
refuse. First they did not react for weeks, and then they answer that
we should look for help to change our pages. We do not know who can do
this in Swahili language, nor did they propose any idea. See
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Reading/Web/Desktop_Improvements#Please…
We see, however, that in large wikipedias like enwiki and dewiki they
have not changed the appearance of pages. I know from German wikipedia
that they took a vote not to go along. So their decision was respected.
But they tell us that a decison was made (by whom ?) and now it looks
they decided to ignore us.
It is very obvious that they do not dare to act like this vis-avis a
large wikipedia like dewiki which also continues the old skin. Obviously
a small African language version is not worthwhile to be considered.
So who has an idea how to go about this situation?
Cheers - Kipala from swwiki
