Dear Wikimedians,
We are happy to announce the maiden edition of the Africa Wiki Challenge, a
writing contest that calls on all Africans, people of African descent,
people that identify with the continent or any one with an interest in
Africa to contribute content about the many things that make up the true
and rich identity of the continent (its rich and colourful cultures,
history, landmarks, education, cities, rivers, lakes, food, vegetation,
etc.) from 23rd May to 30th June 2021.[1] The campaign seeks to project
stories of Africa, project its identity and help reduce the content gap
about the continent on the web.[2]
Each year, we will select a theme to guide users on what to contribute to
as part of the campaign. This year, we have selected the theme “Landmarks
in Africa”.[3] The aim is to document all landmarks that cover historical,
cultural, geographical and places of key significance to a country or the
continent. These include but not limited to;
-
Monuments - Statues, Memorials, Historic buildings, Archaeological sites
-
National Demarcations - Districts, Municipalities, Metropolitan,
Regions, States, etc.
-
Geographical Endowments - Mountains, Valleys, Forests, Waterfalls,
Wildlife, Beach, etc.
-
Infrastructural Developments - Roads, Hospitals, Churches, Mosques,
Schools, Rails, Water parks, Hotels, Theme parks, etc.
Individuals or affiliates are welcome to participate or support the
project. You can participate in the competition by writing new articles or
improving existing articles in the destubathon contest.[4] Visit our
participate page for more information about how to join the competition.[5]
Do you want to organise an activity in your group/country/region? Check out
our organizers page or organizers guide for more information.[6][7]
There will be virtual office hours prior to the start and during the
campaign.[8] These office hours are opportunities to learn more about the
campaign, ask questions, or receive support.
Kindly send questions, suggestions, comments or concerns to
info(a)ofwafrica.org or visit the campaign page on meta or on our website.[9]

Hello Librarians and library lovers,
(Sorry for cross posting)
>From May 15th to June 5th 2021, we will be joining together once again to
continue providing reliable and factual information to the world through
Wikipedia and the #1lib1ref campaign. To participate is easy, simply add a
citation to Wikipedia!![1]
*May Experiments *
This May we are focused on:
-
growing the campaign in East and South East Asia with local affiliates
-- if you want to help contact Venus Lui via (vlui-ctr(a)wikimedia.org) or
me.
-
working closely with AfLIA to sustain our relationship with the
Librarians network in Africa. Last year the participation from African
Librarians was overwhelming, recording about 84% of the total numbers of
edits attained (33,257). This surged our campaign to a staggering increase
of 394%YoY for the May campaign.[2]
-
Supporting our long standing partner for the campaign, IFLA as they
explore citations on Wikidata [3][4]
How can you engage?
We invite you to engage in three ways:
-
Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
Wikipedia.[5]
-
Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
or region.[6]
-
Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
world.[7]
Join local events or editathons
If you are organising an activity virtually or providing a space to teach
or train people with an interest in the campaign, please add your event(s)
here.[8] In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities
and advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[9] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[10]
Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag
in your edit summary! Add your activity to the campaign dashboard to help
us track the activities happening across the globe.[11] This is very
important for us to monitor the reach and success of the initiative.
Learn more in our office hour
Join the next campaigns office hour on Thursday 13th May at 3:00pm UTC,
where we will share about strategies in Asia and Africa, under the
theme “exploring
regional or thematic approaches to campaigns in tackling topics of interest
”.[12]
Please tell your library, researcher and knowledge-loving friends about
#1Lib1Ref in May. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more reliable!
You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group.[13]

Felix Nartey

Hi everyone,
Would you like to get the right people elected to the Wikimedia
Foundation’s Board of Trustees?
Voter turnout in prior elections was about 10% globally. We know we can get
more voters to help assess and promote the best candidates in the upcoming
board elections, but to do that, we need your help.
We are looking for volunteers to serve as Election Volunteers. You can read
more about this role here:[1]
Election Volunteers should have a good understanding of their communities.
The facilitation team sees Election Volunteers as doing the following:
- Promote the election in their communities’ channels
- Organize discussions about the election in their communities
- Translate messages for their communities
*If you want to be an Election Volunteer for any of the African language
wiki or any of the Wiki projects, and connect your community with this
movement effort?* *Check out more details about Election Volunteers*
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/Electio…>
and
add your name next to the community you will support in this table
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/Electio…>
or get in contact with a facilitator
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021#Team>.
[2]
We aim to have at least one Election Volunteer for Wiki Projects in the top
30 for eligible voters. Even better if there are two or more sharing the
work.
If you have any questions or comments regarding this role please reach out
to me or any of the board governance facilitators.
Best,
Zita and the Facilitation team

Greetings!
The Months of African Cinema Global Edit-a-thon was concluded on 30 November 2020,[1] and we want to send a big thank you to all the participants who helped make it a success! Over 3,200 articles were created across 19 language Wikipedias, surpassing all expectations and placing the contest firmly as one of the most successful article-writing contests on Wikipedia.
We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who volunteered to be part of the jury team. It was very complicated trying to assess the quality of 3,000 articles, but we did it! All our winners have now been announced and you can check the complete list here.<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_AfroCine/Months_of_Afri…>[2]
Thank you so much for being part of this global event! Thank you for helping to fix African content gaps on Wikipedia! We hope to see more of your participation in future AfroCine events and activities. Please remember to sign up on the main WikiProject participants’ page,[3] and on the meta page[4] to get updated with these activities.
Thanks,
Sam,
On behalf of The AfroCine Project team.

Hi everyone,
Last week the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees met to decide on a
plan for the 2021 Board elections. And based on the feedback from the
recent Call for Feedback about Community Board Seats, the Board Governance
Committee created a proposal. Below you can find a summary of the
resolution, which was approved unanimously.
-
The Board plans to hold the selection process as soon as possible. The
draft timeline plans for the call for candidates opening June 8 and a
voting period July 20 to August 3.
-
The Elections Committee will determine the voting method. The committee,
in consultation with Wikimedia Foundation staff, may request a delay of up
to three months to implement the voting system.
-
Four seats will be up for selection, the three due for renewal and a
fourth from the approved Board expansion. The two other new
community-and-affiliate seats approved will be selected during 2022,
together with the two affiliate seats that will be due (four in total).
-
The Board will note the skills and experiences they would like selected
trustees to have. Candidates will complete the evaluation form
<https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Resolution:Approving_Trustee_Evaluati…>,
but for information only.
-
The Wikimedia Foundation will provide communications support to the
Elections Committee. We want to support candidates and promote the
elections, particularly in underrepresented groups.
Please check the related announcement on meta for details.[1]
The full proposal is available on Foundation Wiki.[2]

Dear Wikimedia Community Members,
The Core Organizing Team (COT) [1] is excited to take on organizing our
first-ever virtual Wikimania! Many thanks to the Wikimania Steering
Committee [2] for entrusting us with the task of bringing our community
together and celebrating the movement.
This year marks Wikipedia’s 20th birthday [3], and the theme for the 2021
Wikimania will be centered around this fantastic milestone. We want to make
this edition a celebration of all the humans that have made achieving it
possible.
As the COT, we find it important to keep you informed and involved
throughout the process of organizing Wikimania 2021 and we would appreciate
your great support.
We will be reaching out to the wider community for your input on various
aspects to inform some of our decisions. To begin with, we would like to
ask for your opinion on a few things;
-
Entertainment
What kind of entertainment options would you ideally like to see during a
virtual Wikimania? Do you have any ideas for singers, dancers, or any
suggestions for other types of entertainment?
-
Swag
How would you propose we go about swag for a virtual Wikimania? What are
some good ideas for virtual conference swag?
Let us know your thoughts using this LimeSurvey link
<https://survey.wikimedia.it/index.php/479123?lang=en> [4]. The survey will
collect anonymous responses and will remain open until the 5th of May 2021.
We are looking forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions, and will be
sharing more with you as we move towards making a decision on these aspects
for our virtual Wikimania!
Thanks and speak soon!
