Hello all,
Please help pick a name for the new Wikimedia wiki project.
This project will be a wiki where the community can work together on a
library of functions.[1] The community can create new functions, read
about them, discuss them, and share them. Some of these functions will
be used to help create language-independent Wikipedia articles that
can be displayed in any language, as part of the Abstract Wikipedia
project. But functions will also be usable in many other situations.
There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of
candidates, with broad voting beginning on 29 September and 27
October. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on 8
December. If you would like to participate, then please learn more and
vote now at meta-wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Abstract_Wikipedia/Wiki_…
Thank you.
Nick / Quiddity

Dear community members,
I write to invite you to the West African Strategy Meetup. The Meetup will be opened by Katherine Maher, the CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation. Other senior executives of the foundation will also be around to answer any questions we may have.
The Meetup will delve into the recommendations for the strategy process as listed here http://bit.ly/RecommendationsOnePager. Strategy design support staff will also be on ground to answer any questions. We will also discuss what is next for African communities concerning how to host your community prioritization events and joining the global events.
Why should you and your community members attend? The strategy process is important for African communities. Being part of implementing the recommendations in 2021 is a great opportunity for us to play an active role in shaping the movement's future and this preparatory call will help position us to participate effectively in the process.
There will be live interpretations to the major African languages during the Meetup, so please feel free to reach me (kayusyussuf(a)yahoo.com) if you are able to translate into a local language during the call or if you have a local community that will need language translation to fully participate.
Please see the meeting details below.Date: October 31st, 2020Time: 15:00 UTCVenue: ZoomMeeting link: bit.ly/WestAfricaStrategy2030
Please download the Zoom app and try to connect at least 10 minutes before 15:00 UTC.

Hi everyone,
We are announcing the opening of Movement Strategy Rapid Grants [1]. The
grants are intended to support organizations and project communities in
organizing local, regional or thematic discussions on Movement Strategy.
The purpose of the grant is to encourage community participation, provide
the necessary online tools and software, enable facilitation and
documentation for the discussions, and share translated information. Rapid
Grants can support your event plans with a budget up to 2,000 USD, with no
minimum requirement. We are accepting grants between October 26 and
November 12.
In our global discussions, we often have more participation from
established affiliates and online project communities, and in general from
those who are relatively financially secure to take the time to organize
and participate in events. We hope that this grant program will enable and
support a wider range of organizations and communities to take part in
strategy discussions.
Grant details
Scope: For organizing Movement Strategy discussions, for example:
-
to discuss local, thematic, and regional priorities for implementation
-

for implementation.

Hi everyone,
The date is set for the global discussions that will kick off implementing
Movement Strategy, and everyone’s invited to attend. [1] Say hi to old
friends, meet new people, exchange ideas, and take part in discussions for
transformation. Calls will take place on November 21 and 22 at different
times to maximize global participation. You are welcome to attend any or
all. More information to come very soon.
How to participate
* Express your interest on Meta [1] and watch the space for registration
information, we’ll also make sure to keep everyone updated by email.
* Join our Telegram group [2].
In September, we asked the movement to look at the recommendations and
identify initiatives that we should work on together in 2021. [3]
Communities and affiliates have been meeting and discussing, and we are
excited to see what initiatives emerge as priorities for implementation.
[4] Whether you did this work and have your priorities in hand, are just
thinking about them, or want to learn what this is all about, join the
global conversation.
The time is now to be accountable for growing and nurturing the movement
together. We have 10 recommendations to guide the way. [5] What is
something you’d like to do in 2021? What are things we should all work on
together? The outcome of our discussions will be an 18-month movement-wide
implementation plan that we will create together.
Whether you’re a seasoned Wikimedian or a new contributor, an established
chapter, or a new user group, join the discussions. The community-led
Design Group [6] stressed the importance of continuous on-wiki engagement
and options for offline participation for those that cannot attend the
meetings. We’ll be sure to communicate these options far in advance.
What comes after?
* Another set of global meetings will take place on December 5 and 6.
* The purpose of the second set of meetings will be to take the
conversation further, coordinate the way forward, and provide an additional
opportunity for people to get together and identify their priorities in
between the meetings.
If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to us on Meta, via
Telegram, or by email <strategy2030{{at}}wikimedia.org>. Looking forward to
engaging with you all on November 21 and 22, it’s been a while.
On behalf of the Support Team,
Kaarel

FYI
Changes later this week
Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and
MediaWiki.org from 20 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some
Wikipedias from 21 October. It will be on all wikis from 22 October
(calendar).
Future changes
1. *You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour
on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC)*. It will probably be shorter than an
hour.
2. Advanced item In the AbuseFilter extension, the rmspecials() function
will be updated soon so that it does not remove the "space" character.
Wikis are advised to wrap all the uses of rmspecials() with rmwhitespace()
wherever necessary to keep filters' behavior unchanged. You can use the
search function on Special:AbuseFilter to locate its usage.
3. Some gadgets and user-scripts use the HTML div with the ID
#jump-to-nav. This div will be removed soon. Maintainers should replace
these uses with either #siteSub or #mw-content-text. A list of affected
scripts is at the top of phab:T265373.
