Dear Indian Wikimedians,
As many of you may have known, one of our fellow Wikimedian was arrested by
Uttar Pradesh Police in October 2020. His name is Siddique Kappan (His
wikimedia username is User:Sidheeq). He is from Kerala, and he was active
in Wikimedia projects (mainly in Malayalam Wikipedia) until his arrest.
Incidently he is a journalist and he was arrested from the home of Hathras
rape and murder victim while reporting the victim Dalit girl's family
members. UP Police has slapped Sedition, Terrorism as well as UAPA charges
against him.
Kappen is diabetic and now COVID positive. He was admitted to hospital only
after he collapsed in the jail cell. With his deteriorating health, it was
accused that Kappan was chained to hospital bed like an animal. Today's
news reports say that he is in critical condition. (You could always google
"Siddique Kappan")
As a tone deaf people I don't expect anything from this mail, I just wish
to share the information.
Stay Inside, Stay Complementary (non-critical), Stay safe, Stay healthy.

Dear Wikimedians,
Greetings for the coming Holi!
CIS-A2K is glad to share this update with you. We have started developing
partnerships with various institutions in the North East region of India
since 2019. We conceptualised the GLAM project with an organization
named *Research
Institute of World's Ancient Traditions, Cultures and Heritage* (RIWATCH),
a non-profit research and community based organisation in Arunachal Pradesh
during the year 2020 and proposed it in our 2020-21 plan. But due to the
pandemic, the process was delayed. We have launched a GLAM-Wiki project
with RIWATCH from March 2022 in collaboration with the West Bengal
Wikimedians User Group, which will be helping in coordination and execution
of this project. A Wikimedian in Residence has been assigned at RIWATCH to
document, organize and upload the data and content of the rich collection
of the institute focusing on the oral traditions, language and culture of
different tribes in Arunachal Pradesh. The orientation and planning
meetings were conducted with RIWATCH members and a local tribal
organisation named Idu Mishmi Cultural & Literary Society to develop the
GLAM project. After the training of WiR, the GLAM work on Wikimedia Commons
has already been started. The details can be seen here - Commons category
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Research_Institute_of_World%27s…>
and GLAM project page <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:RIWATCH>
.
We welcome your suggestions.

Dear community members,
I would like to follow up on my previous email
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedi…>
to you all and give you some more details about the upcoming Wikimedia
Foundation fundraising campaign in India.
The fundraising campaign will have two components.
1.
We will send emails to people who have previously donated from India
2.
We will run banners for readers in India on Wikipedia itself.
The emails are scheduled to be sent between the 24th of May and the 23rd of
June. We are currently finalizing the different message versions. Samples
will be shared later.
The banners will be active on Wikipedia in India from the 31st of May until
the 28th of June. Prior to this, we are planning to run some tests in April
and May, so you might see banners for 3-5 hours a couple of times before
the campaign starts. This activity will ensure that our technical
infrastructure works. We are currently working on the messages for the
banners and again, I will share examples with you later.
I have created a meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/India2022campaign> for the
communities to use and leave feedback, suggestions, and questions. Please
feel free to share this widely and encourage anyone who is interested to
engage there or via email with me directly.
Generally, before and during the campaign, you can contact us:

Hello everyone,
Hope you are all well and safe. I am reaching out on behalf of the
Communications Department at The Wikimedia Foundation to share some
information about a new project we’re working on to explore creating a
sound logo for Wikimedia, aimed at increasing recognition of Wikimedia
content when it is used outside of our platforms on various audio devices,
such as smartphones and smart speakers. You can read more about what a
sound logo is on our Diff post.
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/03/15/you-cant-see-the-puzzle-globe-on-an-a…>
Why does Wikimedia need a sound logo?
This work is important because people around the world are increasingly
accessing Wikimedia content, such as information from Wikipedia or
Wikidata, on third party platforms, particularly through voice search.
People who learn information from Wikimedia in this way should know and
value where it comes from, and a sound logo will help them recognize
Wikimedia content. Making a sound logo is also exciting because it involves
thinking about our content in an audio setting, and finding new ways to
create in this format.
How can you get involved?
The project is still in its earliest stages as we on the project team think
through what a sound logo should actually be (from an auditory, legal, and
technical point of view) and how communities can collaborate toward making
it in an open and inclusive way.
For now, we invite you to take a look at our project page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo> on Meta-Wiki
which will give you a detailed overview of the project and concept. The
page has a sign up list for community members who are interested in getting
more involved.
Additionally, we would love your support in raising awareness on the
project among your channels. Please feel free to copy or edit the text
below:
“The Wikimedia Foundation is exploring whether and how to make a sound logo

and ask questions on their talk page or over email to

Once we have more to share, we will invite your feedback on draft ideas
about a possible sound logo contest and submission criteria. In the
meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions please post them on the
talk page or over email to soundlogo(a)wikimedia.org.
Thank you warmly for your time and interest.
