Hoi,
I have been interested in mobile mediawiki less then a week and I am
thankful to the Urdu localisers for pointing me in this direction..
- 13 more languages are now completely localised
- Swahili was completed (Africa)
- Malayalam was completed (India)
- there is now some documentation on all the aspects of Wikipedia
optimised for mobile telephone
- Mobile MediaWiki needs to get more prominence on the websites when the
strategy says that it will bring us more traffic
- The localisation is only 24 messages at this time ... it makes sense to
do it for every language, particularly yours
- Something like once a week the localisations are updated I have been
told
So, this is an easy one... help us get more traffic, make Wikipedia better
accessible in your language.
Thanks,
GerardM
Hoi,
After the completion of the Urdu, Malayalam and Bengali mobile interface for
Wikipedia, the Telugu localisation has now also been completed as well :)
On the Dutch Wikipedia we are experimenting with a special mobile main page
.. When people arrive on their mobile it may look good ..
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:Hoofdpagina_(mobiel) There is still too
much on it; we need to consider the speed and the cost of mobile traffic as
well.
Thanks,
GerardM
Hi all,
regarding the mail below:
Sundar and I have initiated contacts with Google on coordinating their article contributions.
Google has agreed in principle for the demands below.
We hope we can update all Indian Wikis about the progress in this collaboration, say in a month or two. Then it may be a good model for all Indian Wikis to follow. So, it may be a good idea for all Indian Wikis to wait during this period so Google need not have to do the same consensus evolving approach with many wikis.
Thanks,
ravi

Subject: Coordinating Google translation kit articles
Hi all,
Following the recent Wiki meet in Bangalore, Sundar (Tamil Wikipedian) brought to our notice that Google is contributing to various Indian language Wikis using Google translation kit and paid translators. In Tamil Wiki, we feel a strong need to corordinate / organize this activity andwe hope it is the same situation in many Indian language wikis.
So, may I propose that we discuss this in this mailing list and send a common notification from Indian language wikis to Google India? To begin with I propose the following. Please add to the list.
1. Google should appoint one coordinator each for every Indian language wiki where they contribute articles. This coordinator should be available to reach by mail and be adequately responsive (Say, once a week at least). He will take feedback from the wiki community and pass it to the paid contributors.
2. If Googe policy allows, they should know us the time frame and scale of this operation so we can plan accordingly.
3. Google should not translate existing articles because they are over riding previous contributions.
4. Each Wiki can submit a list of needed articles and the translators can consider giving priority from them.
5. Each Wiki can draft an essential Manual of Style which the translators shall follow.
6. Based on the responses for above, we shall periodically re-evaluate how we can continue to cooperate with Google.
After we finalise the list , some one of us who has links with Google India team can take this forward.
Thanks,
Ravi

Thanks Ravi for bringing up this topic. I sent a similar mail regarding this
some time back.
Now a days many so called "wikipedians" are popping up here and there
claiming themselves *as the spokesperson of different Indian language wikis*.
The irony is that *none of the Wiki language communities are aware about
these types of developments*. And some of these spokespersons doesn't even
have an account in the respective language wiki.
I know that *Wiki editing* and *Wiki advocacy* are two different topics. But
we, contributors to different language wikipedias, doesn't want some one
outside the Language community taking the responsibility of spokesperson
with out our knowledge.
It is a good idea to appoint a team of active wikians for each language as
the official Spokespersons/contact persons. Let each Wiki language community
decide how it should be represented outside.

Wikipedia may soon open its India chapter
The World’s largest online encyclopedia Wikipedia plans to launch an Indian edition of the website as part of its strategy to expand its footprint in the lucrative internet markets of India and China.

Hi everybody,
As you might be aware, the Britain Loves Wikipedia
<http://britainloveswikipedia.org/> hunt has been making waves
recently.
I was wondering if we Indian Wikipedians can launch an initiative to
get photographs for hundreds of India-related articles that don't have
even one photograph.
While there have been efforts like Wikipedia Takes Chennai in the
past, they have been too locality-centric to attract hundreds of
photographs. We need something bigger!
We have a huge number of articles without photographs in categories
such as Universities and colleges in India, Companies of India,
Buildings and structures in India, Cities and towns in India,
Festivals in India etc.
There are thousands of Indians online -- imagine if they can
contribute a photograph each about their city, village, workplace,
festivals, cuisine, school, college or alma mater!
I'm sure a lot of bloggers, Facebook users and Twitter users will be
willing to contribute photographs to Wikipedia articles. We just need
to reach out to them.
I've created a page at Wikipedia:WikiProject India/India Loves
Wikipedia, where we can brainstorm about this proposal. Please do
share your thoughts, and add this page to your watchlist to keep track
of updates:

Hoi,
The Urdu Wikipedia finished the "Wikimedia Mobile Interface" 24 messages.
They did this before finishing the "most used" messages 469 messages. Their
advantage is that the content of the Urdu Wikipedia is now available in a
format that is more appropriate for mobiles ...
I do not know how much effect this will have for the traffic of the Urdu
Wikipedia but it is an easy net gain.
Thanks,
GerardM

Do you - or someone else - have any plans to add these at some point in
time?

Yes very much. I am preparing a blog post based on these numbers. Infact for
the past 1.5 years we are publishing an analysis based on these numbers in
Malayalam wiki mailing list each month.
I know the current information is not "analysis". But I hope it will improve
as we move forward based on the valuable inputs from all of you.
Siebrand, Erik,
I have noticed that in all the statistics tables at different
locations, *Bhojpuri
language* is representented as *Bihari*. But Bhojupuri is one of the *Bihari
languages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bihari_languages)*. Other Bihari
languages are : Angika <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angika_language> *·*
