Hello Wikimedians,
We are very happy to announce that the Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in India
is starting from tomorrow and will continue for the entire month of
September.
As this year, we are facing devastating effects of COVID-19, we urge you
to stay inside your home to avoid exposure to the deadly virus. You do not
have to go outside of your safe zone to photograph monuments. We are
completely okay if you can upload old photographs taken by you. Please be
safe first!
We are also expecting lesser participation than previous years due to the
restriction of movement due to the pandemic. So, to increase awareness
about the competition, we have created a promotional video at the last
moment (special thanks to Ananya and Rahul) and boosted it on Facebook.
Thanks to CIS-A2K for sponsoring the promotion part.
You can find the video on Commons here -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_in_India_…
and on Facebook here - https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1616065545227639
Regarding the list of monuments, it will grow even during the competition
as the data entry is a continuous work for us throughout the year. We
heartily welcome Wikimedians from different parts of the country to work on
monuments protected by different local agencies and inform us in the event
talk page. We will find ways together to include them in the master list.
Just like previous years, we again promising to wrap up everything within
the expected timeline after the competition ends and we are going to keep
our promise again. :-)
Welcome you all in the competition,
Regards,
Bodhisattwa

Hi Joseph Seddon !!
Nice to know about the fundraiser in India.
According to the fundraiser request page (that asks for PAN number), looks
like WMF is really serious to generate some money from India.
Probably, WMF is now well aware of FCRA and other regulations in
India..Thanks to the discussions that happened (on the mailing list or off
the list) during the de-recogniation of the India chapter !!
It is likely that WMF can receive money directly from general Indian public.
Was impressed with this and out of curiosity, digged a bit further on the
QR code. Found that the money goes to some Depansum Solutions Private ltd.
More digging into this showed that the company is incorporated in 2018 and
has capital of just Rs. 1 lakh !!!
I suppose WMF gives out much more money to various volunteers and user
groups for even many smaller projects.
Not sure how and why WMF found such a great creditable company to receive
money on their behalf !!
This is surely going to raise a doubt about WMF intentions especially when
this is coming up after the closure of India activities.
Dont know how and why CIS-A2K was not involved in this money receiving. I
think they have the required financial permissions.
Hope WMF answers these queries quickly. OR else, the usual delay in
response will confirm something fishy going on somewhere !!
Have a good day and be safe and coronafree !!

Hello all,
CIS-A2K will be featuring one Wikimedia tool or script on this meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/Tool_of_the_day> daily from
15th August, 2020 onward for next 30 days. 10 tools will be selected from
Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource and Wikidata each, which are extremely useful
for everyday editing. This initiative is intended not only to help new
editors to familiarise with existing tools but also to help experienced
editors recap.
The tool will also be featured from the official social media channels of
CIS-A2K on the same day. You can keep an eye on Facebook
<https://www.facebook.com/cisa2k> and Twitter <https://twitter.com/CISA2K>.

Hello,
I hope you might find this interesting. In case you join/wanna try this
Wikimedia Chat option, please join the India channel
https://chat.wmcloud.org/wikimedia/channels/india
There is also an mlwiki channel, I see:
https://chat.wmcloud.org/wikimedia/channels/mlwiki
There is also a Bangla channel. I am unsure why it is currently not showing
in the channel list (is it because of Indic-script in the channel title?)
https://chat.wmcloud.org/wikimedia/channels/bangla
Thanks

Hello,
Due to the current situation, there are more and more collaborations
happening online instead. and now you can see Wikimedia-related discussion
groups in Slack, Discord, Telegram, Facebook, and many more. Besides being
scattered and inaccessible to people who don't have accounts in those
platforms (for privacy reasons for example), these platforms use
proprietary and closed-source software, are outside Wikimedia
infrastructure and some harvest our personal data for profit.
IRC on freenode is a good alternative but it lacks basic functionalities of
a modern chat platform. So we created Wikimedia Chat, a mattermost instance
in Wikimedia Cloud. Compared to IRC, you have:
* Ability to scrollback and read messages when you were offline
* Push notification and email notification
* You don't need to get a cloak to hide your IP from others
* Proper support for sharing media
* Two factor authentication
* A proper mobile app support
* Ability to add custom emojis (yes, it's extremely important)
* Profile pictures
* Ability to ping everyone with @here
* much much more.
You can use Wikimedia Chat by going to https://chat.wmcloud.org, anyone can
make an account. This is part of Wikimedia Social suite [1], the oher
similar project is "Wikimedia Meet". [2]
Some notes:
* This is done in my volunteer capacity and has been maintained by a group
of volunteers. If you're willing to join the team (either technical or
enforcing CoC, kicking out spammers, other daily work), drop me a message.
* Privacy policy of Wikimedia Cloud applies: https://w.wiki/aQW
* As a result, all messages older than 90 days get automatically deleted.
* As a Wikimedia Cloud project, all of discussions, private and public are
covered by Code of conduct in technical spaces: https://w.wiki/AK$
Hope that would be useful for you, if you encounter any technical issues,
file a bug in the phabricator.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing two new WikiCite grant programs: Project
& events, and e-scholarships
To: wikicite-discuss <wikicite-discuss(a)wikimedia.org>, <
wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
I have the great pleasure to announce two new grant programs for projects
that support the goals of WikiCite: the promotion open citations and linked
bibliographic data to serve free knowledge.
The steering committee is now accepting applications for the following two
types of grants. For both types the application deadline is 1 October 2020,
and all projects must be completed by 1 May 2021.
--- Project & Event grants ---
Grants between $2,000 and $10,000 (USD equivalent) are available to
individuals, groups, and organisations with a project that supports the
goals of Wikicite.
All the details, the eligibility criteria (especially for in-person
events[1]), and the application form are available on the WikiCite project
& event grants homepage:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/grants
Individuals, groups, and organizations may apply, and projects may be of
any nature. This includes technical (e.g. software, tools), event (online,
or in-person), resources (training materials, documentation), or other
forms not mentioned – as long as it supports the goals of WikiCite.
--- e-Scholarships ---
The e-scholarship program is a new kind of grant in Wikimedia, created in
response to an era of COVID-19 quarantines, and the 2030 Movement strategy
goals.
An e-scholarship provides a per-diem equivalent allowance for 1-5 people to
stay at their home(s) and work for 2-4 days on a project supporting the
mission of WikiCite. e-scholarship recipients' projects can be the kinds of
things they might have previously undertaken with a scholarship for an
in-person hackathon, unconference, or research trip, for example.
All the details, eligibility criteria, program design principles, and the
application form are available on the WikiCite e-scholarships homepage:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/e-scholarship
Funding will:
- be provided in advance;
- be calculated at the WMF per-diem rate for the city where the
e-scholarship recipient lives;
- and (as it is a living allowance) not require recipients to submit
expense reports.
"Remote group" applications are encouraged, as are projects which focus on
content or communities which are historically underrepresented in Wikimedia
projects. Building a bot, fixing a tool, wrangling a dataset, writing
complete documentation... all are valid e-scholarship projects. A
confirmation letter (in advance) and/or participation certificate
(afterwards) can also be provided.
