Hello,
2009/9/17 Nuno Tavares <nunotavares(a)hotmail.com>om>:
Caros,
I do not think that in the "grand scheme of things", having an offsite
copy of Wikipedia is a good idea, except for archiving purposes,
maybe. But as far as I can understand the WMFoundation's technical
scheme, having anything "live" just does not fit in the deplyment
scheme.
As for a toolserver... well, this is a long and difficult debate :).
Of course, the existing toolserver sometimes does not work, or answers
come late, or such. But multiplying the existence of toolservers will,
in my opinion, only end up in multiplying the maintenance needs and
the lower the overall reliability of each toolservers, as well as
disperse efforts and kill potential synergy between tools and users.
Whenever possible, I think chapters should support the existing
toolserver financially, rather than try and build their own from
scratch. Some chapters have started their own toolserver, for various
reasons (some because they couldn't put the money into the existing
toolserver), but I don't think it is the right way to go. Maybe the
existing toolserver needs more input, more active users, more users
speaking different languages, it should be an assessment that we make
all together, to see where things can be improved. But I don't think
that splitting efforts is not the way to go.
A única
I am not in the IT business, so I don't know :) But a server is a
one-time donation, when bandwidth or rack space is a much more
"long-term" thing. Not sure one is easier to get than the other...
Rui, sim, a manutenção do servidor e alojamento
poderiam ficar sob a minha
alçada [em regime de voluntariado!!! :)].
Completely agree :)
Focus on developping the chapters, on doing "sexy" free knowledge
projects, and then get back to a tool server ;-)
Cheers,
Delphine
