Without expressing an opinion on the question at hand[1], it is perhaps relevant to remember that Rexford is wearing two hats in this conversation: beside being a Wikimedian, he has also been involved in promoting Google's products and platforms, and this thread may be read in that light.

Anyhow, crossposting to multiple social networks is not really a big overhead. As far as I know there are existing tools for that.
