Will you be at Wikimania on Wednesday evening? Then join us for the first
ever Social Media “One-Night Stand” workshop session with Andrew Lih and
Sree Sreenivasan from 1900 to 2030. All are invited, even if you’re not
signed up for pre-conference, and this will be especially useful for
chapters and user group leaders, or anyone interested in outreach.
How might we more effectively use social media to further Wikimedia’s
mission globally and locally?
Join this hands-on workshop with social media guru Sree Sreenivasan (former
chief digital officer of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Columbia
University) and veteran Wikimedian Andrew Lih (User:Fuzheado) as they march
through social and mobile strategies via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook,
WhatsApp and other platforms for community engagement. Come share your own
strategies and success/failure stories for using social media with your own
communities.
More details here:
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Social_Media_One-Night_Stand
We will also plan to showcase these tools at the Water Scarcity edit-a-thon
the next day at the Cape Town Tourism offices, by using Facebook Live,
Twitter and Instagram. We encourage folks to not only help edit Wikimedia
content, but come and practice using social media to cover our community
for the world to see.

Hi, I am forwarding this email to others who may be interested. It would be nice if interpretation could be available in many languages. Thank you for your initiative.

Greetings from Russia!
This is to let you know that beginning with this Wikimania broadcasts
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program#Remote_attendance
we'll try to volunteer-interpret all Wikimedia live events (or recordings thereof) into Russian.
Last night we tested with a smartphone & tablet using Wikimedia Research Showcase - July 2018 as a source & it seems to be working well enough. We observed 5-7 sec. delay, speaker speed above 120 words per minute & audio quality affecting my delivery results, but that's quite bearable for the economy class ticket. As a qualified conference interpreter with some experience of helping international groups over the web, I can pull this through in my free time.
The idea came about seeing the leaked version of the video-address by our middle-aged & older Wikimedians from Wikipedias in the languages of Russia community recorded for Wikimania-2018 participants (I understand total collection is on the way to Cape Town with Oleg Abarnikov of Wikimedia Russia from Moscow). It seemed to hint our elders from among participants of our 33 Active Wikipedias & other projects https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Languages_of_Russia_Community_Use…
would actually also like to be exposed to whatever the English-speaking youngsters are learning via YouTube broadcasts. These local & Russian bilinguals are core contributors into local language Wikis, so respecting the request of our language guardians seemed important.
Regards,
farhad

Hi Ellie
I'm partial scholar attending both the pre-conference and Wikimania. I
arrive in Cape Town on Monday night.
I didn't receive a follow-up to the email you sent on July 9th. Should I
have been expecting something?
Many thanks
Kelly

For those of you who will be attending:
We are just about ready for all of you (projecting 650+ Wikimaniacs, but
it could be larger depending on local attendance.)
Attention WMF-sponsored attendees (e.g., scholarships, organizers): You
will be getting an email in the next 24 hours with information to help you
in your travels (e.g., insurance and tips on what to bring/expect/fight
delays, etc), your stay in Cape Town, and accommodations. WMF Staff/board
and others have been given information directly from the WMF in the past
week.
Another communication to everyone who is registered via Eventbrite will go
out early this week with updates.
You can register online until July 13th and there are discounts for
residents of South Africa on that page
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Registration>. After that date
you can come to the registration desk at the conference.
If you want to schedule a Meet Up or participate in the lightening talks,
please sign up soon at https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetups
We are also pleased to report that the water crises in Cape Town has
somewhat abated due to heavy rains recently and conservation. There will
be a water sustainability edit-a-thon
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_edit-a-thon>held as
part of the pre-conference program next week.
Another update about what sessions will be recorded and streamed will be
posted before the conference.
And finally, remember that it is winter in Cape Town and check the weather
forecast before you go. It's been very cold and wet lately! We are
providing attendees with 'wool beanies' with the conference logo, but for
anything warmer than that, you are on your own :-)
On behalf of the Organizing Team of Wikimania '18, we are looking forward
to seeing all of you next week.
Ellie
P.S. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me directly if you have

Hey all - asking this here since I imagine others may have the same
question :)
There are apparently three types of plug used in South Africa. Which of
them is most widely used in Cape Town?
thanks!

Hi all,
An hour ago I arrived in Cape Town, in the rain!
People with happy faces in the rain.
Even while it is dark here, the Table Mountain in full dark is extremely
beautiful thanks to the clouds behind it.
The staff of the hotel is exited for all you to come next week!
Welcome all to South Africa!
Greetings,
Romaine
FYI,
For those traveling with kids to Wikimania in Cape Town – best to bring a
copy of their birth certificates with you. Lots of airlines are checking
and making it a requirement before flying into S.A.
I flew from Nairobi to Jo’burg and they did indeed check. Twice. It seems
to be airline dependent, as the carrier is the one fined if they transport
kids who don’t have a birth certificate.
http://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/statements-speeches/621-advisory-new-requir…
We were warned by a friend who lives in South Africa about this
requirement. We brought copies of the certificate just in case. They were
needed.

Hello everyone,
With the pre-conference kickoff of Wikimania 2018 only seven days to go now
things are getting even more busy now than ever. This will likely be my
last email update on how preparations are going for Wikimania.
Firstly I would like to encourage you to join our Telegram group. You can
join the official Telegram group for Wikimania 2018 here:
https://t.me/wikimania_2018
It is a good place to ask questions, get general information, and talk
about Wikimania related stuff. I am pretty active on it so please feel
free to ask me any questions there. We currently have 108 members on the
Telegram group.
I am happy to say that we have over 550 people registered for Wikimania
2018 so far which is pretty much exactly the number we were aiming for at
this stage and is on track to meeting our 650 total registration goal for
the conference.
==Meetup locations==
There was some confusion caused by my last message on meetup locations for
Wikimania. I meant to clarify that people can still get rooms to host your
meetup on the Wikimania page here
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetups>. If there are no more
rooms aviable or you are looking for a more open space then you can use any
of the surround restaurants. There are over 40 within walking distance of
the venue location and I have even drawn up a map of some of them on
the Orientation
page <https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Orientation> on the
Wikimania wiki.
==Volunteers==
Raymond and Erin have been working hard on getting everything ready for the
volunteers. We will have our volunteer training session next week Monday
where we will welcome the volunteers, conduct training exercises and
allocate roles. Raymond will send out more details on that to our
volunteers soon. As I mentioned in my last email we got an outstanding
response from people wishing to be volunteers which has given us a real
challenge of choosing from so many very strong volunteer applicants.
==Website==
You might have noticed that the website is being continuously expanded and
updated. This will continue to happen until the day of the conference.
Please continue to check up on the Wikimania Wiki website for updates and
changes. I would like to thank Liam for playing a large and important role
in tirelessly updating and maintaining the program. I think it is looking
very good.
==Plenary speakers==
I am currently working finalising the details of the plenary speaking
events. Most notably the opening and closing plenaries. Just a few last
details to wrap up. I have a few small surprises for the opening plenary
which I will not share here (or else it would not be a surprise) but
needless to say I am excited about them.
==Water==
The water situation
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Water_shortage> in Cape Town is
now looking very good. With good rains so far this year (and some more
rain still expected) the water supply situation has improved greatly.
People are still encouraged to save water but I can say with 100%
confidence that the water situation will in no way impact Wikimania. I
have checked the weather report and it looks unlikely we will get much rain
during the conference. However I still suggest that you bring a rain
jacket, especially if you plan to stay on in Cape Town after the
conference. :-)
The official Wikimania edit-a-thon
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_edit-a-thon> has been
organised for Thursday the 19th July and will take place at the Cape Town
Tourism Offices across the road from the Southern Sun Hotel where Wikimania
is happening. On that note I would also like to share with you this
message from Cape Town Tourism on the water situation in Cape Town:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfS063Fbflk
==Parties==
All welcoming and closing parties have been organised. You can find out
more about them here
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Social_events>.
==Safety==
The Cape Town Central City Improvement Distract
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_City_Improvement_District> (CCID)
has been informed of Wikimania and has assured me that they will ensure
that extra public safety officers will be deployed in the outside area
around the conference venue and along Stand Street that runs between the
Southern Sun Hotel (Wikimania venue) and the CapeSun Hotel (where a lot of
people are staying) so as to better ensure public safety. The City Centre
of Cape Town is a safe place, I have lived here for many years and walk
around at night often and never had any problems. There is still a risk of
crime just as there is in any major city but we are working to try and
minimise that as much as we can. Please use your discretion and common
sense when outside of the hotel area at night and do not leave valuables
such as laptops unattended to.
==Publicity and outreach==
Publicity and local outreach remains a focus of mine. I have more radio
interviews to do this week all in preparation for the big event next week.
It is important to us that we increase people's awareness of both Wikimania
and the fact that Wikipedia is open for anyone to edit so as to encourage
more South Africans (and hopefully people in Africa generally) to edit
Wikipedia.
==Post-Conference==
A number of people are organising post conference tourist trips. You can
see more about that here
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Postconference_activities>. I am
thinking of leading either a hiking trip or a trip to see the penguins on
Monday the 23rd July but I am not sure.
--
I am looking forward to hosting you all in Cape Town this year and making
this a fun, interesting and impactful Wikimania. We have been planning on
hosting this event ever since our first bid in 2008 so we are
enormously excited about next week.
Best regards,
Douglas.

I'm writing some slides for a presentation at Wikimania. I'd like to
use some local examples - which Wikipedias exist (and are most
active), in the local languages of Cape Town/ South Africa?

Wikivoyage:
https://en.wikivoyge.org/wiki/Wikimania_2018_Cape_Town_Guidebook
has a page with advice for Wikimania attendees. It's a good start, but
needs more local knowledge. Please help to improve the page if you can
For instance, South Africa uses both "Europlug" and "type D" power
sockets - but which is most prevalent at the city's hotels, and the
conference venue?
