Hi,
I have a general question about the workshops. It is expected that we register for the different workshops/sessions. If so, how is this done.

The form was indeed on the main page of WTM, I only removed it once
the WikiBus was filled up.
Of course, you don't need to have a seat on the WikiBus to participate
in WTM, and I've now re-opened the form while taking out the WikiBus
question.
James is quite right about Boltbus; this information is also on the
main WTM page, and some people who can't make it on the WikiBus may
wish to book themselves to the same BoltBus or something.
BTW, here is the WTM mailing list:

I have not noticed the the final signup form of
WTM<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dExocDRkU0pFd0ZOVm1GZF…>until
now. I though that just to sign my name on the WTM page was Okay. I
just found it on the discussion page of WTM. However, It is said "The form
'Wikimania Takes Manahattan' is no longer accepting responses." when I
click on the link.
Is it means the signup for WTM is end, or just signup for WikiBus is end?
P.S. I think this is a mistake that the organizer of WTM put the message
of final signup form only to a *discussion page*. It seems many attendees
miss that. It should be put on to the main page of WTM or sent to the
public mail list to make sure every attendees can see it.

Hi all,
Can we please stop arguing and demotivating the organizers who have put
together a very nice event for us?
The event will be a reception held in a very prestigious building in the
evening, where people from the cultural sector and outside Wikimania will
attend, including representatives of foreign cultural institutions
represented on the East Coast if I understood correctly. Going to such an
event in T-shirts and jeans would look out of place under almost all
circumstances.
Fortunately, the event's invitation and dress code (which was set at the
minimal level acceptable for such an event in such a venue) was published
well in advance so that everyone who can and wants to can pack their
suitcases accordingly.
As I gather, a number of Wikimanias had formal, or invitation-only
receptions before the official programmes, though I am not sure they had a
dress code; I am actually quite happy that this year's reception will
actually be open to the attendees. We should celebrate that – this is
certainly not an elaborate plot to suit up attendees or to exclude anyone.
I am especially happy to see strong cultural programmes as side events this
year, apart from the usual parties.
Whatever you may say about traditions that are not the same as general
Wikimania traditions; we should be open to celebrate others' cultures and
traditions and receptions with dress codes are just as much cultural
experiences as anything else you may experience. You are not forced to
partake in this experience, but cultural sensitivity requires that if you
do want to participate you respect the modest requirements on dressing and
thereby show respect to the organizers, the event and the other
participants; and if you do not want to participate, that you try not to
spoil the enjoyment of others.
The reception is scheduled to last about 90 minutes, after [and during]
which everyone will have an opportunity to enjoy city life with or without
other attendees in whatever clothes they find appropriate for a warm summer
evening.
Best regards,
Bence
Dear all,
All registered Wikimania attendees who will be present in Washington, DC on
the evening July 11 are invited to the Wikimania 2012 Google Opening
Reception, held in honor of the World Digital Library, at the Great Hall of
the Library of Congress' Thomas Jefferson Building from 7:00-8:30 PM
(19:00-20:30 EDT). This is a great opportunity to connect with other
Wikimania attendees, the Board of Trustees, and individuals from the
Washington, DC, area. There will be tours of the Library of Congress
provided, along with two exhibitions that will be open to attendees. We
will have beautiful music along with great food and drinks, and we will
have a short presentation on the World Digital Library and how it fits into
our global vision. It will be an amazing event in a spectacular venue, and
we look forward to sharing it with you.
For more details and to add your name to the list of attendees, please
visit http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Google_Reception.

OpenHatch is a non-profit dedicated to matching prospective free
software contributors with communities, tools, and education. Wikimedia
Foundation is pleased to announce that we're partnering with OpenHatch
<http://openhatch.org/> to make the upcoming pre-Wikimania hackathon
even more useful.
Asheesh Laroia and other OpenHatch folks will be working with Katie
Filbert (Aude), Gregory Varnum (Varnent), and me to encourage and aid
the Wikimedia technical community, by designing and executing the
novice-focused half of the hackathon. You'll see Asheesh in IRC as
"paulproteus".
I'm excited that we're working with OpenHatch on this. I've borrowed
lessons from OpenHatch in structuring our events and educational
materials. They are leaders in teaching new contributors, and in
building open source communities' capacity to nurture. With OpenHatch's
help with this event (and with the documentation they write), I hope to
get scores of semitechnical Wikimedia editors over the barriers to
technical contribution.
OpenHatch will, among other tasks:
* Develop novice-focused curricula that include tutorials for novices
* Design at least three project-based exercises for novices, based on
the model OpenHatch created with its Python and open source workshops
* Review existing public reference and tutorial material on the topics
* Update or write relevant instructional documentation on mediawiki.org,
including writing high-quality setup instructions for a new developer's
development environment
* Find on-the-ground volunteers to help address problems that newcomers
will face
* Disseminate lessons learned to the Wikimedia community
You'll see Asheesh and his colleagues on the hackathon page at
https://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Hackathon , in IRC channels
#mediawiki, #wikimania, and #openhatch, on wikitech-l, on Wikimania's
lists, and the new Wikimedia/OpenHatch event list:
http://lists.openhatch.org/mailman/listinfo/wmf-outreach-staff .
Welcome!

Hi,
I looking for recommendations for SIM cards to use during Wikimania &
to Nevada & California area (I'm staying a month).
Until now, the best that I found is AT&T Pay As You Go plans - need to
purchase a cheap device (didn't found option just to purchase sim card) for
about 25$, monthly plan will cost another 25$ and Data plan for 25$ (1GB,
and I'm sure I'll need a much more :). What make the story quite expensive.
Any others option that the local guys can recommend?
Thanks,
Itzik
