Dear all,
I wish to remind you all that registration for Wikimania 2011 in Haifa,
Israel (August 4-7, 2011, with a mini chapters conference and developer
meetings on August 2-3) has been open since the beginning of the year and is
still ongoing. The early registration period ends on May 31st!
Whoever already knows they will attend Wikimania, whether privately, in
formal function, or as a scholarship recipient, should please complete their
registration (see [1], [2]) as soon as possible, not only to enjoy the
discounted rates for registration and accommodation but also to guarantee
your room, as the availability of cheaper accommodation, and of hotels in
the proximity of the venue, is limited. Please note that anyone going to
attend the conference under any function (for example, WMF staff) must
complete the registration form.
Your early registration will also help us better prepare for the conference.
If you want to translate the registration form ([2]) into your own language,
this can easily be arranged - please contact me.
If you want to receive discount codes to allow groups of participants (for
example, employees of your chapter, or recipients of your chapter's
scholarship program) to register without paying for themselves, in return
for a bulk payment to cover all of them, please contact me.
Also, if you want to help with the nascent international program committee
which is going to sort out and review the ~150 submissions (!) we already
have, please contact me too :)
Should you have any other questions relating to the conference, we're always
at your service, see [4].

Hi all,
I have already asked offlist some of you I know might be interested in
bringing your kids to Wikimania, but I'm putting the question out
again here.
The Haifa team is working on finding options for babysitting during
the conference. As Liron pointed out, there are many more of us with
kids now, and we'd like to make sure that people can enjoy Wikimania
while showing their kids and family what this Wiki thing is all about.
As such, I am putting out a general call out there so that we can get
organized with this aspect of the conference.
We need to know as soon as possible who wants to come with their kids
and who would need babysitting.
We're looking at professional day-care possibilities, with a
possibility for the kids to be taken care of during the day (9.00 -
17.00) on the conference site, which will allow parents to come and go
with their kids as they visit sessions or don't.
If you're thinking about coming to Wikimania, but are reluctant to
leave your kids behind, this is the time to speak up. The more
prepared we are, the better, and the more we are, the better too, kids
are going to have fun learning about the edit button :)
While we're looking for sponsors or ways to finance this, it might be
that those of us with kids will have to pay a little to make this
happen in the best of ways. We'll try and make sure to keep the costs
as low as possible.
If you're interested, please send an email offlist to:
delphine [at] notafish [punto] org AND liron [at] wikimedia [punto]
org.il so we can get organized.
What we need from you is the following:
Number of kids:
Age of the kids:
Do you need more than just day care, for example evening babysitting
(note: this for now is an option, and is not what we're focusing on,
so we can't promise we'll get that part sorted out within the frame of
the conference babysitting options, but if we have demand, we'll
definitely be looking into this)
I hope to have lots of people interested and looking at bringing their
kids so that the day care is fun for all.
Can't wait to have my kids learn a few other languages ;)
Best,
Delphine

Dear all,
The Wikimania jury are pleased to announce that they have selected Washington, D.C., USA as the location for Wikimania 2012[0]. The DC team presented an imaginative and exciting bid[1] that the jurors found impressive. As before, all the bids to host Wikimania had strong points in their favour and making this decision was difficult. We will send detailed feedback to each of the bids, but for now we know the winning team will appreciate the community's support and help in making a great Wikimania in 2012. The jury particularly thanks the other finalist in the process, the South African team[2] for their excellent work, and encourages them to bid again in the near future.
If you have never been to a Wikimania before I would urge you to consider attending. This year the conference will be in Haifa, Israel[3], and promises to be an excellent event. Wikimania is always a great way to meet members of our global community and help improve the movement, and Washington DC looks to be a worthy successor.
Our congratulations to the Washington DC team and many thanks to all of the bidders for working so hard. I encourage all bidders to use the fantastic energy they have put into their bids by hosting smaller continental or regional events, and considering another bid for Wikimania in the future.
The jury welcomes looks forward to discussing the result and the Wikimania process with the community.

Several people asked me for help booking a flight to Haifa, because
their favorite flight booking websites and travel agents couldn't find
any flight to the airport of the city which will host this year's
Wikimania.
The answer is: Please book a flight to Tel-Aviv (TLV). After you
arrive to Tel-Aviv, take ground transportation to Haifa.
I edited the page about transportation in the conference website accordingly.

I won't be attending Wikimania 2011, but it's not because of any objections
to the policies of the Israeli government, more because I simply won't be
able to get the time off work! In any case, the conference is not being set
up by the Israeli government, it's being set up by a crew of fantastic
Wikimedians who have done a wonderful job of setting up the conference and
making it as accessible as possible for everybody. They deserve to be
congratulated for that, rather than sniped at by anonymous cowards and
newcomers who have never been seen around these parts before.
Cheers,
Craig

Enough is enough, people! I expect pretty much everyone has decided
whether they are happy to attend Wikimania in Israel and the
conference certainly isn't going to moved at such short notice, so
none of these threads serves any purpose whatsoever.
mattsatchwell,
There is a word in Hebrew which describes what you are doing here - chutzpa. You have the nerve of making political propaganda in a forum that was not meant for political discussion. You can spread your propaganda in many places on the net, but you chose to do it here in order to force disruption. You know well that propaganda is about half-truths, and this is exactly what you are doing: name dropping, inaccurate and incomplete citations and misleading arguments. I am NOT going to comment on you allegations here, because this is absolutely not the place for that and because people here are intelligent enough to recognize you manipulations. You are enjoying the freedom of speech and keep enjoying it even though you abuse it.
Dror K
I decided to do a complete boycott of Wikimania 2011 due to Israel's
politics and the situation in the Gaza Strip and the illegal colonization in
the West Bank.
