Just a reminder to all that the next general planning meeting for Wikimania
2008 will be held in #wikimania2008 on Sun, Feb 24 @ 20:00UTC. Hope to see
you there and please do forward this message on to any local mailing lists.

Guys,
OK, now an outsider had had his knuckles wrapped & knows a little of what’s
going on, and that there is a programme committee elist buzzing furiously,
can I just suggest a few things, in attempts ot include a few other
foreigners.
I’ve asked the guys at gossamer threads to take a feed from this list and
attempt to make it comprehensible. You’ll see what I mean if you look at
this. HYPERLINK

Cary would you like to put this link on the HYPERLINK
"https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimania-l"https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimania-l page, perhaps next to the archive
link. At least a foreigner can easily see that apart from announcements, and
my indiscretion, Dec 23 is the only conversation. They’ll never know
anything about the programmes committee’s list, but that’s up to them if
they wanted to offer their (locked) archives for perusal. You could do the
same for other the other 5 WMF lists as well if you wanted.
I wouldn’t preclude wikback from some WM conversations. I did set up a
thread over there, if you wanted to be inclusive of the disaffected. If you
look at the readership, it’s around 5 times this thread (and some good ideas
as well)

Just a note about the technical track. You may be across this remote group.

Might not even be talking WMF but that’s the way communications seems to
happen in remote WMF related communities.
RE IRC. It’s better than nothing. But would someone ask Jay, the new comms
manager, if he couldn’t suggest a quick improvement. I have mentioned the
idea of the accessgrid (as where IRC will end up if it overeats) a number of
times and Markie will shoot me for doing it again. But if the guys in the
bibliotech are interested in linking a few global spots, then we might help
a few old national librarians to understand how a younger mind thinks about
libraries these days (and vice versa) regards, simonfj

Hi!
Will there be a formal announcement about 2 week extension on
wikimania 2009 bids?
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimania_2009%2FBids%2FTimelin…
I'm one of the general coordinators of Buenos Aires bid and we've had
hard work last weeks refining the bid. We expressed our concerns about
the timelime some time ago, because is a very difficult season for us:
many governmental authorities and companies directives and managers
are on holidays. So, we have been in a hurry trying to get support and
working on many bid details. Yesterday, I had to arise to draw a
budget just in the expiry date -- i've been in bed since sunday
because a food poisoning.
So, we will be very happy if moderators and jury give a final timeline
for bids to work in a better and relaxing way.

Said,
However I think you feel we have no progress on this front so I will fill
you (and everyone) in:
Thanks Muhammad,
That’s all I ask for. Someone has to be the shipmaster and I’m too old to be
subtle about finding them. You’re aware that Florence went to Davos, and
hopefully met the Library’s director. As far as my Dec. suggestion about
asking (someone like) him, and Jimmy, to do a comparison between the oldest
(continuous) western library and the newest, it might get a few creative
juices flowing (and hopefully) attract a few other national librarians. You
might even lead the librarians by showing them this UN sponsored project..
HYPERLINK
"http://www.worlddigitallibrary.org/project/english/video.html"http://www.worlddigitallibrary.org/project/english/video.html
You already have one fixed session with Sue announcing that someone from
this team would be talking about the wikisurvey. HYPERLINK
"http://ccg.merit.unu.edu/"http://ccg.merit.unu.edu/ (NB the link off to the
left). There’s a thread here between the two, though to the UN.
As another idea in trying to introduce Wikimedia’s global communities to
some semi-related others, if you click on the link down the bottom left on a
the ccg’s page, through to unu-merit, you’ll see they’re announcing that
they’ve just launched an OpencourseWare portal. I’m not sure if this is in
anyway useful – the commonality with wikmedia is that OCWC is about free
content. I just didn’t notice Egypt on their consortia’s page. HYPERLINK

&id=15&Itemid=29
It’s a bit late in the day now to attract most of the people I was hoping
for. They set their conference agenda’s late in one year for the next. So
would you mind considering the idea of linking up between a few places in
different parts of the world and Alexandria. I’ve flagged this tool, but the
bibliotech’s guys will have their own preference. HYPERLINK
"http://www.accessgrid.org/home"http://www.accessgrid.org/home The technical
stuff is pretty straight forward, but as you can imagine, it might be a bit
too much of a surprise for WMF’s communities this year. All the best.

Hi there,
Can anyone make a brief note about Wikimania for Foundation website? Like that:
Library of Alexandria to Host Wikipedia's Annual Conference in 2008
The Wikimedia Foundation announces that it will stage its 2008
Wikimania conference at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. The event
will take place next summer. Read more or visit official site (31 Oct.
07)
currently [[Foundation:Home]] features Wikimania at the bottom. It was
actually a piece from September news but for conference advertisement,
I retarded its removal ;D But an item released on September is a bit
shabby and we may have more than just date perhaps now?
I suppose CfP is a good item ... we have updated it and included open
discussion already? Or do you have any other good item about
conference? Last year Sandy put there "call for sponsorship" too, for
example ...
