WikiMoney is a quantification of WikiLove. Every long-term contributor gets an initial amount of 100 WikiDollars (also known as WikiEuros), for him or her to spend on any Wikipedia improvement project of their choosing. See
http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiMoney
for the details.

That's a great idea, but I think anyone should get their $100 for being a wikipedia contributer, not just the long-term ones. How could it be misused?

If everybody could get WikiDollars (now also known as WikiSmilies) just for the asking, then the currency would be worthless and it would end in rampant inflation. Right now, a WikiSmilie has a quite definite value: it is worth about 2 edits.

On the talk page I said this is a hilariously bad idea. At the same time, I don't want Axel to think I'm being completely flippant in my criticism. Quantification of goodwill is difficult and necessarily perverts the goodwill itself. For one thing, goodwill/love/friendship is not a finite resource. Then there is the simple fact that if this idea enjoys any popularity it will rapidly become completely unworkable. There's a good reason bankers and accountants exist. And if it doesn't enjoy any popularity, it's worthless.
Better is to adjudge what goals creating such a page was intended to accomplish and then try to figure out a better-planned structure for meeting such goals.
The whole wikimoney thing.
If you really want to show a user your appreciation, drop a check in an envelope for a few dollars and mail it to me. I'll have my wife to the accounting (she has a business degree and already handles all the family money) and she'll cut checks and make nice little monthly reports.

At least you got a laugh out of it.

If I see something wrong with Wikipedia, and I lack the time, patience or knowledge to fix it, I want to be able to tell others about it, quantify how important I feel the task to be, and maximize the likelihood that the job gets done.
and then try to figure out a better-planned structure for meeting such goals.
Be my guest.

I think most people wouldn't care enough to get a wikismile. Since it can't be used for anything outside of Wikipedia (well, *theoretically* it can) it is already worthless.

So you think everything done within Wikipedia is worthless?
Of course you don't. If you earn WikiWishes, you can use them to motivate others to take on tasks which you yourself do not want to or cannot complete. This may sound silly, but it only works if people believe in it -- if they don't, nobody will be motivated to earn WikiWishes, which means that they won't have new wishes to spend, and so forth.
I still think that the initial W$ amount is too high. If we had limited the amount to 10-20, and explicitly declared W$ indivisible, people would be much more motivated to earn it because they would feel "poor". Right now, everybody has their pockets full, and nobody thinks they need to make more because they can make plenty of offers with 100 W$. In a way, we already have WishInflation, even though we haven't really started using them yet ..

The motivations behind this initiative are commendable, but I have a hard time seeing it as anything but extra work. Anybody who has been around for over a month soon sees that there is more than enough work to go around. Just imagine all these otherwise excellent contributors running around accounting for W$. Don't we already spend enough time with the mailing lists? :-)
Perhaps when the foundation is at last a reality, and there is real money in the bank for promotional material we could send out "I'm a Wikiholic" buttons and T-shirts paid for in W$. Members could earn W$ for simply editing, but at a higher rate if it's something that the community has asked for. A person could lose W$ for bad behaviour. Maybe Lir and DW could start off owing us T-shirts ;-)

As long as WikiTridents (ψ my version of the money symbol and name) aren't integrated into the software, nobody's going to run around making more accounts for ψs. They can just add five zeros to their ψ100 next to their name. We *could* impliment your complicated system, but that would take a lot of effort and detract from our goal of becomming an encyclopedia. Besides, who would pay for the t-shirts? --- Ray Saintonge saintonge@telus.net wrote: The motivations behind this initiative are commendable, but I have a hard time seeing it as anything but extra work. I don't think Wikipedia is worthless, I think the money is worthless. So it won't be much worse if we allow anyone money.
I think your idea is great, for each person to have an indivisible ψ10. Since this hasn't been going on for so long, let's switch to doing that instead of making everyone rich. We could just divide everyone's money by 10 and then round.

Then, I will stay "rich". If I ever meet someone I gave some wikismile in wiki, I will give her or him a realsmile on top of it.

Now it's starting to sound like the Freemasons (Franc-maçons) with their secret handshakes. :-)
