It's not untargetted. It targets users of Wikimedia projects, which
are the people most likely to donate to Wikimedia projects.
Nitpicks aside, I think you know what I mean.
It's not a nitpick. Your key point was that ads are more targeted than
donation banners, and I disagree. When I look something up on
Wikipedia, I'm rarely interested in buying anything related to it, I'm
interested in finding out about it - ie. having access to free
knowledge, which is exactly what the donation banner is about.
My key point was that I'd personally prefer opt-out targeted
advertising for two weeks out of the year to what Wikipedia has right
now.
