I don't think it's inherently bad. Neither is giving gifts to politicians.
We should forbid paid conflict-of-interest editing for the same reason
that I can't just give my congressman a new car out of gratitude for his
public service. It's a slippery slope, and one which the vast, vast
majority of the money available will be pushing in one direction, a
direction that fundamentally conflicts with the purpose of the institution.
