Some of us don't read the new messages before trying to edit.
However, talk pages are shown on Google, and block logs aren't... and
it is entirely conceivable that a banned user might not want the fact
that he or she is banned to show up on Google.

Erm... what Josh is trying to say is that people have
to wait until
they try to edit before being told about a block if we do it your way,
but people find out when they log in if we do it his way. There is no
reason why we shouldn't do both, but it is nice to get the 'you have
new messages' notice in advance of actually editing pages.

Right... but whether your user name is blocked,
or someone else's user
name is blocked, or an IP address you use is blocked, you will still
see either the Blockedtext or the Autoblockedtext when you click on an
edit link. The software doesn't check to see if you are blocked
before deciding what CSS layout to show you... and besides,
banned/blocked users are still allowed to view the source code, just
as when pages are protected, so we still need edit links.
