I'm not aware of any spellchecker that actually works on Firefox.

Probably, but this is better than nothing. There must be third-party
tools which do this already?

There are plenty of methods, like Aspellfox, but they all have some
sort of problem (spellbound is hard to set up and fragile, Aspellfox
doesn't let words be saved, etc. And almost all require some sort of
manual invocation). With any luck, the configuration willl let you
specify a dictionary (this is probably more feasible for *nix
users...); actually, I would be very surprised if the spellchecker
didn't let one do that.

for the curious, I use View Source With and have it call emacs, which
itself has a hook to run flyspell/ispell.
