I think you might be mistaken - that would lead to a logical
contradiction, as you could translate back into the original language,
and claim copyright over the result, which would be very similar to
the original.

You own the copyright in the translation, but it can still
infringe on the copyright of the original.

This is how it works with any derivative work. A translation is an
example of a derivative work.
