Is it compliant with
the GFDL to clean up an article through a temporary page?
Yes, but only if:
* in the case where only one person edits the temporary page, they are
the person who applies the changes there to the main article, or
* in the case where multiple people edit the temporary page, the
normal merge procedure is followed to apply the changes to the main
article (this would involve *not* deleting the temporary page, but
merging the contents and replacing it with a redirect).
Note that a soft redirect would usually be preferable to a hard
redirect in the case of merged temporary pages.
But the temporary page is not merged. The original article is deleted and
the temp is moved to the main article. If it would be merged the copyvio
would still be in the history.
