That's because you're working on a relatively tiny scale. If you were to
scale up a billiard ball (which is smooth enough to be a clichéd comparator)
to the size of the Earth, guess which would end up being smoother?
Oh, and did anyone mention the fact that the
sphericity of the Earth is
distorted by the tides?
