Hi all,
I just ran across this advertisementhttps://blog.reputationx.com/wikidata for a personal and business branding/reputation repair (?) company that offers advice on creating your own wikidata page for self-promotion, and offers services including "Wikipedia Creation for Business", "Wikipedia Editing for Business", Wikipedia Creation for Individuals", and "Wikipedia Editing for Individuals" in addition to Wikidata editing/creation. Does this align with Wikidata/Wikipedia's policies on self-promotion? It seems like an avenue for people/businesses who are willing to pay to get themselves improved visibility and reputations on Wikimedia platforms.
I didn't know where to send this, but thought the Wikidata community ought to at least be aware of it.
Thanks,

Hi Crystal, thanks for your message.
No, it is not in line with the Wikidata policies, but unfortunately we can do only so much to counter this. Companies who do this kind of actions on Wikipedia existed for a very long time now, it was only a matter of time that this would happen on Wikidata too.
What you can do to help us is to mark for deletion such items whenever you find one. You can go to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Preferences, click on the "Gadget" tab and tick the gadget "RequestDeletion": this is a rather simple way for you to notice us admins of potentially spammy items. Then it will be on us to check if they can be deleted of course, but at least we would be notified. :)
More generally, these kinds of companies never distracted us so much from the real deal, which is to contribute constructively to the project. We're aware of the risk, but it's not a reason to let ourselves down. ;)
Thanks again!

I can also add that as a Wikidata administrator I delete promotion items on a daily basis. There are plenty of them, and they are not always easy to spot.

Hi,
What we have is https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Disclosure_of_paid_editing (what basically are requirements by the Terms of Use of the Wikimedia Foundation). Unfortunately there is not much we can do until we find them editing on-wiki without disclosure or if they are abusing multiple accounts. I think that paid editing can be quite problematic.
Best regards Ameisenigel
