[action requested] Technical Decision-Making Retrospective Survey

Hello all, The Technical Decision-Making Forum Retrospective team <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_decision_making> invites you to complete a survey about Wikimedia's technical decision-making processes. While there will be more ways to participate, this is the first and most important step in our data collection. It aims to gather information about your experience, thoughts, and needs regarding the process of making technical decisions across the Wikimedia technical spaces. This survey will be used for gathering information about the process and the needs around technical decision-making that touches our production systems. You can find the survey link here: https://wikimediafoundation.limesurvey.net/885471?lang=en Who should take this survey? People who do technical work that relies on software maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) or affiliates. If you contribute code to MediaWiki or extensions used by Wikimedia, or you maintain gadgets or tools that rely on WMF infrastructure, this survey is for you. What is the deadline? *August 7th, 2023 * What will the Retrospective team do with the information? The retrospective team will synthesize the collected data and publish an anonymized analysis that will help leadership make decisions about the future of the process. We will collect anonymized information that we will analyze in two main ways: - Sentiments based on demographic information: these will tell us whether there are different needs and desires from different groups of people. - General needs and perceptions about decision-making in our technical spaces: This will help us understand what kind of decisions happen in the spaces, who is involved, and how to adjust our processes accordingly. Is the survey the only way to participate? The survey is the most important way for us to gather information because it helps us gather input in a structured manner. Re: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Research/Office_hours The change from "office hours" to "individual consultation" has bothered me from the beginning, and I've finally reached the level of sadness that prompts a message here... Individual consultation can be great for the individuals involved. However, it leaves the rest of the community out in the cold, without possibility of benefit of knowing what is being discussed, learning by lurking, etc. So far as I've been able to discover, there are no minutes or logs of such consultations, so there's not even a chance to learn after-the-fact nor even to have a sense of what's being talked about. This makes me sad. Of course, the Tuesday Noon ET time slot doesn't work well for me anyway (it conflicts with the weekly call of the W3C Credentials Community Group), but perhaps a new time slot might be selected if Office Hours resume. The web page says "We will evaluate the success of this approach in mid-2023". It's now late-2023, but I see no sign of that evaluation, so perhaps I haven't missed my chance to make my voice heard. Help Improve Bad Edits Detection on Wikidata with the Annotation Tool

Hi everyone, As you're likely aware, the Wikimedia Foundation's Machine Learning and Research teams have been working on migrating from ORES to Lift Wing — a new open-source machine learning infrastructure. This shift brings a host of new capabilities and simplifies the process of retraining models over time. (For more details, see the previous announcement <https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org/…> ) Lift Wing has already been trained using a dataset comprising reverted and patrolled edits. However, it would be extremely helpful to have additional new training data to help the model get even better at detecting problematic edits on Wikidata. Therefore, we need your help. How You Can Contribute The Research team built a tool to make your involvement easy and effective. This tool allows you to label new training data quickly and efficiently. Now you can more easily run your own Wikibase and collect and maintain data that doesn’t fit into Wikidata. 2023 was also the year when the efforts of Wikidata editors were recognized across the Wikimedia movement with the awarding of the Wikimedian of the Year award to Taufik Rosman and the Wikimedia Laureate award to Siobhan Leachman. Over the coming year I want us to find ways how we can bring more people, who are already editing a bit here and there, closer to the community and help them find their place in our community. Wikidata has something for everyone 😉 Wikidata now has over 106 Million Items and nearly 1.2 Million Lexemes. We are closing in on 2 Billion edits, making about 20 Million edits per month. All this content is used to create useful, quirky, educational or just fun applications that wouldn’t be possible without Wikidata and all the work you put into it. Over the coming year we want to make that even easier by building better APIs, lessening the strain on the Query Service, doing more outreach to developers as well as making our data more usable by ironing out ontology issues. In addition there will be increased focus on improving how the other Wikimedia projects integrate Wikidata. With the opening up of Wikibase Cloud we will hopefully also see many new Wikibases pop up that cover more specialized data or be used as playgrounds to prepare data for Wikidata. I am looking forward to a growing Wikibase Ecosystem and excited about more Linked Open Data becoming available to the world, with Wikidata being an entryway to it all. As you are aware, Wikidata is celebrating its remarkable journey as it marks its 11th birthday, reflecting on the remarkable transformation of the past decade. Through activities such as edit-a-thons, workshops, and meetups, these gatherings serve as a unifying force for contributors and open data enthusiasts. To celebrate Wikidata's 11th birthday, we've organized a series of thrilling events and activities in India. *Datathon* A *11 day long Wikidata data-thon* is planned to celebrate Wikidata's 11th birthday in India.[1] The data-thon is organised to celebrate the birthday of Wikidata along with learning how we can contribute to Wikidata and make use of it in different Wikimedia projects. The data-thon aims to enhance Wikidata items by incorporating labels and descriptions in your native language, along with the addition of references, qualifiers, and statements. This event, conducted in an unconference, participant-driven style, provided a platform for attendees to discuss the challenges of running open-source projects and share valuable tips and advice for mentoring interns. It's worth noting that Wikimedia has been an active participant in Google Summer of Code since 2006.
