Hello!
As you might already know, Wikdiata Query Service has been misbehaving
in the last 24 hours. Our public SPARQL endpoint [1] was slow and
throwing timeouts. Sadly, exposing a public SPARQL endpoint is a hard
problem and we don't have a final solution to this. Still we have some
improvements. Have a look at the incident report [2] if you want
details.
I also started to write a runbook for WDQS [3]. This should be
interesting mostly to our SRE team, but feel free to also have a look
and suggest improvements / clarifications.
Note that our internal WDQS endpoint was stable during that time (as expected).
Thanks for your help and your patience!
Guillaume

Hello!
For a reason still unkown, we are experiencing slowdown and timeout on
Wikidata Query Service. The issue seems to be non trivial and will
probably take some time to resolve. You can check the corresponding
phab task for updates [1].
Thank you all for your patience and forgiveness!

Hi everybody,
As you might know I would like to represent the Wikidata community at the
Wikimedia movement strategy 2018-20, more specifically at the working group
of Roles & Responsibilities [1].
Regardless of whether I have enough support to legitimize my claim, I'm
interested in knowing what you think that the requirements should be,
because it can be useful to appraise this or future applications.
Things that have been mentioned so far: on-wiki activity, public-facing
experience, knowing Wikidatans in person, particular insights.
If you have more ideas, please share them!
Thanks
Micru

Hello all,
The program of Wikimania 2018 is out!
I drafted a summary of all the Wikidata-related sessions on this page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Wikimania_2018#Program>. Feel free
to improve it, or add things if I forgot some.
You can also sign-up in the "I'm attending" section so we have a better
overview of who from the community is going :)
Cheers,
Léa

Dear Wikimaniacs,
After a LOT of work by a lot of volunteers, we now have a program
published for Wikimania Cape Town:
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program
There's still some things to be tweaked, and info to add, and there's
certainly some formatting errors that crept in when we imported to the
wiki - but it's pretty much all there and we're very proud of it.
Hopefully people will appreciate some of the innovations we've tried
to add into this year's design - notably among which is the coloured
'beads' (referencing thins year's logo design of African beadwork)
that lets people follow their preferred thematic 'knowledge gap'
throughout the program.
Thank you everyone who has been involved in getting us to this point -
the program committee, the local organising team, the WMF staff, the
theme team, and many other individuals besides - including the many
people who made submissions to present this year.
Opportunities to nominate for Meetups and Lightning talks are also now open:
- https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lightning_talks
Sincerely,
Liam/Wittylama - on behalf of the Program Committee.

includes a full track dedicated to Wikidata, with various speakers and
topics:
- What is Wikidata, and how can we support the minority language
communities?
- ArticlePlaceholder: support the communities and help small Wikipedias
to grow
- Lexicographical data: when words enter Wikidata
- Translathon: improve Wikidata in your language in a few minutes
- Workshop: create an automatic infobox on your wiki
- Language gaps in Wikidata
