Hey folks!
Wikimania is coming up and I need your help! I will be giving a
keynote about Wikidata and would like to show the human side of our
awesome project. Wikidata wouldn't be what it is without all of you
and I see Wikimania not only as an opportunity to highlight all of the
exciting software developments around Wikidata, but to also show off
what an awesome, creative and diverse community we have here!
To do this, I would like as many of you as possible to send me a photo
of yourself - a selfie (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12068677) would
be perfect. Bonus points if it either demonstrates a connection you
have with Wikidata or includes the Wikidata logo somehow. You can be
subtle and sneaky with the logo or go big and bold—the only limit is
your creativity! All submissions should be licensed CC-BY and you must
have the right to upload and use the image. Additionally it’d be
awesome if you could send me a sentence or two about what Wikidata
means to you. (Either use my user talk page or send me an email.)
Submission deadline is July 20th. When you're ready, upload your file
to Wikimedia Commons in the category “Wikidata selfies”
(https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikidata_selfies). Need
some inspiration? Check the category.
I’m sure we can be just as famous as the Oscar selfie:

Hi all,
The Wikidata classes and properties browser [1] was just updated:
* Much faster loading; thanks to Yaron improving Miga to make this possible.
* The browser *with* classes is now the default since it is fast enough
to be suitable for most. You might still want to use the property-only
version [2] if you are on a mobile device or very old machine. It won't
safe any bandwidth, just memory/CPU.
* Images! Side effect is that the application may not be "safe for work"
or may be offensive to users who object to depictions of Q58 etc.
* Fresh data (fresh today).
Feedback is welcome, as usual. Various known bugs remain (it's still a
prototype after all).
Thanks to Yaron for the improvements in Miga that enable the faster
loading now.
Cheers,
Markus
P.S. In case you wonder: I already removed the one instance of Q58 that
the browser reports: an act of vandalism dating back several months. We
really need to create more ways to look at the data so people will
notice such things earlier. Q58 will still remain a class, since it has
two legit subclasses in Wikidata.

Hi!
I am new to WikiData. I wanted to know how can we get the json belonging to
a category. Say I want to access the json belonging to Category 537. If I
can get the Json, can you pls specify how I can access this json?
Main Aim: I want to know what Category 537 means and the sub categories and
topics within this category.
Regards!

Also there are Special:FilePath and thumb.php. I'm not sure how this
affects caching though.

Hello Markus;
The URL of a Commons image is build like this:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/x/xy/File_name.ext
Where X and XY are the first char and first&second chars respectively of
the md5sum of the filename (replacing the spaces with _).
For a 200px thumb:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/x/xy/File_name.ext/200…
The SVG files are a special case, therefore .png is appended to .ext, being
.ext.png. For SVG doesn't mind to use big thumb sizes, but when file is
JPG, don't try to generate a thumb bigger than the original file or you
will get a beautiful error.

Dear Wikidatarians,
From Commons media properties, I get the string name of a file on
Commons. I can easily use it to build a link to the Commons page fo
rthat image.
* But how do I get the raw image URL?
* And can I also get the raw URL of a small-scale (thumbnail) image?
I would like to beautify my Wikidata applications to show some images. I
know this is more of a general MediaWiki question, but it is much more
relevant in Wikidata, so I am posting it here first. I guess somebody
has already solved this since we have images in various Wikidata-based
applications and gadgets.
Thanks
Markus
Hey folks :)
We have just deployed the entity suggester. This helps you with
suggesting properties. So when you now add a new statement to an item
it will suggest what should most likely be added to that item. One
example: You are on an item about a person but it doesn't have a date
of birth yet. Since a lot of other items about persons have a date of
birth it will suggest you also add one to this item. This will make it
a lot easier for you to figure out what the hell is missing on an item
and which property to use.
Thank you so much to the student team who worked on this as part of
their bachelor thesis over the last months as well as everyone who
gave feedback and helped them along the way.
I'm really happy to see this huge improvement towards making Wikidata
easier to use. I hope so are you.
Cheers
Lydia
