Dear all,
Dimitris Kontokostas has started to draft a document for submission at
Google Summer of Code:
http://dbpedia.org/gsoc2014
We are still in need of ideas and mentors. If you have any improvements
on DBpedia or DBpedia Spotlight that you would like to have done, please
submit it in the ideas section now. Note that accepted GSoC students
will receive about 5000 USD, which can help you to estimate the effort
and size of proposed ideas. It is also ok to extend/amend existing ideas
(as long as you don't hi-jack them). Please edit here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/13YcM-LCs_W3-0u-s24atrbbkCHZbnlLIK3eyFLd…
Becoming a mentor is also a very good way to get involved with DBpedia.
As a mentor you will also be able to vote on proposals, after Google
accepts our project. Note that it is also ok, if you are a researcher
and have a suitable student to submit an idea and become mentor. After
acceptance by Google the student then has to apply for the idea and get
accepted.
Please take some time this week to add your ideas and apply as a mentor,
if applicable. Feel free to improve the introduction as well and comment
on the rest of the document.
Information on GSoC in general can be found here:
http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2014
Thank you for your help,
Sebastian and Dimitris

Hey everyone :)
I'm really happy to let you know that we have another addition to
Wikimedia Germany's software development department. Thiemo is a
long-time Wikipedian and will help us out especially in Wikidata's
frontend development. Here's a bit more from him:
"My Name is Thiemo (simply spelled "Timo") and I'm proud to have the
chance to become part of the software development department as a
front-end developer. Previously I coded interfaces for Windows Mobile
devices, helped coding games and DJ software as well as several
typical enterprise solutions (resource planning, warehouse management).
I'm an active Wikipedia user for 10 years now, mainly working on
technical stuff (templates, JavaScript gadgets, mangling bugs) as well
as organizational tasks (e.g. moderating deletion requests and
requests for comments).
To quote a colleague: I think "code is poetry" and I love every object
oriented programming language (JavaScript being kind of an exception
here) and supports regular expressions, my all-day Swiss army knife."
Cheers

Hoi,
We have often had discussions about generating texts to be used in
Wikipedia articles. The drawback of articles that are generated in this way
is that they do not get updated as more information becomes available.
The data in Wikidata is comparable with the kind of data often used in such
processes.
The first kind texts that are generated bu the Reasonator are based on the
biographic information of a person. As Johann Sebastian Bach is a great
example of the power of both Wikidata and Reasonator, I invite you to have
a look [1].
The text is completely generated based on the information in Wikidata and
Magnus is very much in the process of iterating this functionality. What I
hope you will see as a challenge is writing similar functionality for other
languages.
What I hope for is that the Wikidata development team will appreciate this
for what its potential and support it when it is found that additional
technology is needed.
Thanks,
GerardM

Subject: Google Summer of Code 2014 starts NOW
Date: Tue, 04 Feb 2014 11:41:36 -0800
From: Quim Gil <qgil(a)wikimedia.org>
To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Google Summer of Code 2014 has started.
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2014
(Thank you Raylton for creating this page)
The first step is to apply as Wikimedia organization before February 14.
I can do this, with your help:
* We need another org admin ready to work. I was the primary org admin
in GSoC 2013 and I'm also primary/only org admin in FOSS OPW and
Facebook Oen Academy. Google Code-in was different, with Andre and me
really sharing the org admin role. This brought better and more reliable
program administration, plus useful knowledge shared by more people for
future editions. Interested? Please reply.
* We need to add proposals with mentors and community buy-in under the
"Featured project ideas" section at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/Possible_projects#Featur…
. Either you step in now, or you wait at least six months until the next
call. Interested? Just edit the page. The sooner the better.
PS: I will be offline on holidays next week. I will submit the Wikimedia
application before leaving, almost week before the deadline. You will be
able to keep improving our proposal by improving the related wiki pages.

Subject: [GSoC Mentors Announce] Now Accepting Applications for
Mentoring Organizations for GSoC 2014

Hi all,
We're pleased to announce that applications for mentoring organizations
for Google Summer of Code 2014 are now being accepted [1]. If you'd like
to apply to be a mentoring organization you can do so now via Melange
[2]. If you have questions about how to use Melange, please see our
User's Guide [3]. Please note that the application process has changed a
bit from previous years: to apply you must now create your individual
profile and then an organization profile before submitting your
application.
Please note that the application period [4] closes on 14 February at
19:00 UTC [5]. *We will not accept any late applications for any reason.*

Hi,
this is just to let you guys know that we made some major progress with the Property-Suggester in the last couple of weeks:
1. The suggester is now integrated with the UI of the Edit-Item-Page, so that suggestions are displayed, when a user wants to add a new statement to an item.
2. The suggestions can/will be filtered by user input (a prefix search is applied to labels and aliases of possible property suggestions)
3. When there are no (more) suggestions available at some point, a normal search considering all properties is used as a fallback
You can test all this yourself by prentending to add a new statement to http://suggester.wmflabs.org/wiki/index.php/Item:Q4 or http://suggester.wmflabs.org/wiki/index.php/Item:Q5.
As last time we are looking forward to your feedback and ideas
