I think some people on this list might be interested in knowing that we have just released a set of interactive tools http://osome.iuni.iu.edu/tools and a free API https://market.mashape.com/truthy/osome to query a large historical sample from the Twitter stream (70 billion tweets, 2010-ongoing) [1].
We hope such a tool could be useful to researchers and the people (journalists, citizen scientists, etc). For example I'd love to see a mashup of the trends tool http://osome.iuni.iu.edu/tools/trends/ with the new pageview API https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/PageviewAPI !
