Symposium: Wikipedia and Education in the Time of the “Crisis of Information”
Friday 16 September 2022, 9am-4pm
Anne Harding Centre - Building 24, University of Canberra
In the age of the infodemic and growing distrust towards the institutions of liberal democracy there can be little doubt that information is in crisis. The Wikipedia and Education in the Time of the “Crisis of Information” Symposium brings together academics who use Wikipedia as part of their teaching practice or analyse wiki data, and key actors bridging the academia-Wikipedia divide. Participants will share their experiences, address Wikipedia’s potential to address the “crisis of information”, and critically reflect on what role educational institutions can play in this respect.
The symposium will begin with the launch of the book Six Fact-Checking Lessons for Kids, which compiles educational resources developed as part of the Co-Developing a New Approach to Media Literacy in the Attention Economy research project. This project is part of the Affiliated Schools Research program, in which researchers from the University of Canberra collaborate with ACT school teachers.
Cost: free, but registration essential

Hi,
I am a postgraduate research student at the University of Salford in the
UK, currently exploring data visualisation through wikidata. Right now I'm
working with a tool called neo4j but need some help from someone who is
more familiar with it than I am. I've already found some articles to guide
me and even a YouTube video.
Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Enrique

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research<https://www.demogr.mpg.de/en/> (MPIDR) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the research group "Gender Inequalities and Fertility<https://www.demogr.mpg.de/en/research_6120/gender_inequalities_and_fertilit…>", led by Dr. Nicole Hiekel.
The research group investigates the determinants and consequences of gender inequalities and their role in explaining fertility behavior and outcomes of family formation and family enlargement. A particular focus is drawn on contexts of diverse and complex partnership forms and dynamics.
We welcome applications from researchers with a PhD in demography, sociology or related disciplines. The successful candidate will develop their own research agenda and contribute to the successful realization of collaborative projects within the research group. We are seeking creative, self-driven, and collaborative researchers with remarkable social and communication skills. Strong quantitative analysis skills and knowledge of the statistical software packages R or Stata are required. Experience with survey data analysis on the individual and household level, as well as the analysis of administrative data using longitudinal data analysis as well as cohort analysis is an advantage.
We provide a stimulating research-oriented community, an excellent infrastructure, and opportunities to work with exciting datasets. The successful applicant will be offered a contract for 3 years with the possibility for an extension of 2 more years. Remuneration commensurate to experience (starting from approx. 57,000 EUR gross per year for researchers who have just completed their PhD, up to approx. 71,000 EUR gross per year for more senior scientists), based on the salary structure of the German public sector (Öffentlicher Dienst, TVöD Bund). It is expected that successful applicants will be in residence at the MPIDR. Support for relocation costs is available.
Please apply online via this portal<https://survey.demogr.mpg.de/index.php/438595?lang=en> and include in a single PDF file:
1. Curriculum Vitae
2. Letter of interest (max. 1 page)
Briefly state why you are interested in joining the MPIDR, how the MPIDR could foster your professional development and career trajectory, and how your interests fit those of the Research Group on Gender Inequalities and Fertility.
3. Research Statement (max. 2 pages)
Briefly describe your research accomplishments, as well as ongoing and future research plans. Describe your technical skills, areas of expertise, as well as the type of advanced training that you would like to receive as a research scientist.
4. A writing example (e.g., one of your publications)
5. Contact information for up to 2 academic referees
In order to receive full consideration, please apply by September 19. Interviews are planned for the week from October 24 to 28 and will be held virtually. The exact starting date is flexible but latest in the first quarter of 2023. Applicants should have completed their doctoral degree; however, PhD students who expect to obtain their degree in 2022 or early 2023 may apply.
For inquiries about the position, please contact Nicole Hiekel at hiekel(a)demogr.mpg.de<mailto:hiekel@demogr.mpg.de?subject=Postdoctoral%20Researcher%20-%20Inquiry>.

It aims to bring together experts from areas like Demography, Sociology, Anthropology, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Biology, etc. to advance the subfield of kinship demography and address pressing scientific and societal questions.
The MPIDR is one of the leading demographic research centers in the world, studying issues of theoretical and policy relevance. Dear all,
We are happy to announce that we will organize a DBpedia Meeting in
Vienna, Austria. The DBpedia Day is part of the SEMANTiCS, Sep 13-15,
and will be held on the first day of the conference on 13th of September
2022.
This year's topics: Linking and Consumption of Linked Data
Since 2007, DBpedia has been the hub of the Linked Open Data Cloud, the
largest constantly updating knowledge graph on Earth using Linked Data
principles.
By following the 62 million links published alongside the 6.5 million
identifiers of the DBpedia Snapshot
(https://www.dbpedia.org/blog/dbpedia-snapshot-2022-03-release/
<https://www.dbpedia.org/blog/dbpedia-snapshot-2022-03-release/>), our
users could discover and consume more data from the web. Now in 2022, 15
years after the first release, we developed a way to scale up our
identifier base into the billions to provide the glue for better linking
and consumption of linked data. The main topics of the DBpedia Day will
be twofold:
1. We would like to ask our industrial and academic members as well as
the wider community to present the latest technology to discover, query,
link, curate and consume Linked Data and Knowledge Graphs. If you would
like to present at the DBpedia Day, please send an email to
dbpedia(a)infai.org.
2. We will introduce the Linkmaster 3000
https://tinyurl.com/linkmaster-3000-lswt
<https://tinyurl.com/linkmaster-3000-lswt>(the new Open Online Link
Curation Platform), the Global LD API, the Databus and the Global LD
Browser to gather feedback.
