Dear Wiki Community,
My name is Mackenzie Lemieux and I am a neuroscience researcher at the Salk
Institute for Biological Studies and I am interested in exploring biases on
Wikipedia.
My research hypothesis is that gender or ethnicity mediate the rate of
flagging and deletion of pages for women in STEM. I hope to
retrospectively analyze Wikipedia's deletion history, harvest the
biographical articles about scientists that have been created over the past
n years and then confirm the gender and ethnicity of a large sample.
It appears that we can identify deleted pages with Wikipedia's deletion log
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_log>, but to actually see
the page that was deleted we need to be members of one of these Wikipedia
user groups: Administrators
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators>, Oversighters
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Oversight>, Researchers
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Researchers>, Checkusers
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CheckUser>.
Does anyone have advice on how to obtain researcher status or is there
anyone willing to collaborate who has access to the data we need?
Warmly,
Mackenzie Lemieux

Hello, everyone!
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Sam, and I am a data analysis
intern at a company called Megaputer Intelligence. My comapny makes a
software which which has a lot of promise in improving various Wikimedia
projects, so I am hoping that my work here will lead to a collaboration
between Megaputer and the Wikimedia foundation.
Right now I am trying to produce a better anti-vandalism bot for English
Wikipedia which involves working with a dataset of edits classified as
vandalism or not vandalism. The problem that I am having is that some of
the pages I need to access have been deleted or suppressed. Could
someone tell me where is the right place to apply for researcher rights
so that I can access these?
Thanks,
Sam at Megaputer
Dear all,
A Swedish professor is writing a piece on Wikipedia for Sweden's largest
daily newspaper, for the upcoming 20 years anniversary. She asked me for
"interesting and widespread studies" on Wikipedia – not necessarily within
any certain focus.
If you would share 2 or 3 studies, that have gained some attention and that
you find interesting, which would these be?
Would be very happy for any help!
Best

Hello,
The next Research Showcase will be live-streamed on Wednesday, December 16,
at 9:30 AM PST/17:30 UTC, and will be on the theme of disinformation and
reliability of sources in Wikipedia. In the first talk, Włodzimierz
Lewoniewski will present recent work around multilingual approaches for the
assessment of content quality and reliability of sources in Wikipedia
leveraging machine learning algorithms. In the second talk, Diego
Saez-Trumper will give an overview of ongoing work on fighting
disinformation in Wikipedia; specifically, the development of tools and
datasets aimed at supporting the discovery of suspicious content and
improving verifiability.

Talk 1
Speaker: Włodzimierz Lewoniewski (Poznań University of Economics and
Business, Poland)
Title: Quality assessment of Wikipedia and its sources
Abstract: Information in Wikipedia can be edited in over 300 languages
independently. Therefore often the same subject in Wikipedia can be
described differently depending on language edition. In order to compare
information between them one usually needs to understand each of considered
languages. We work on solutions that can help to automate this process.
They leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. The
crucial component, however, is assessment of article quality therefore we
need to know how to define and extract different quality measures. This
presentation briefly introduces some of the recent activities of Department
of Information Systems at Poznań University of Economics and Business
related to quality assessment of multilingual content in Wikipedia. In
particular, we
demonstrate some of the approaches for the reliability assessment of
sources in Wikipedia articles. Such solutions can help to enrich various
language editions of Wikipedia and other knowledge bases with information
of better quality.
Talk 2
Speaker: Diego Saez-Trumper (Research, Wikimedia Foundation)
Title: Challenges on fighting Disinformation in Wikipedia: Who has the
(ground-)truth?
Abstract: Different from the major social media websites where the fight
against disinformation mainly refers to preventing users to massively
replicate fake content, fighting disinformation in Wikipedia requires tools
that allows editors to apply the content policies of: verifiability,
non-original research, and neutral point of view. Moreover, while other
platforms try to apply automatic fact checking techniques to verify
content, the ground-truth for such verification is done based on Wikipedia,
for obvious reasons we can't follow the same pipeline for fact checking
content on Wikipedia. In this talk we will explain the ML approach we are
developing to build tools to efficiently support wikipedians to discover
suspicious content and how we collaborate with external researchers on this
task. We will also describe a group of datasets we are preparing to share
with the research community in order to produce state-of-the-art algorithms
to improve the verifiability of content on Wikipedia.

Job description
============
We are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow with an excellent track record in Knowledge Graphs (KG). Topics of interest in this area include, but are not limited to, semantic web, ontology engineering, automated KG construction, reasoning, link discovery & KG completion, efficient KG storage, and KG access (APIs). The successful candidate will contribute to Polifonia, a collaborative project between King’s College London and 10 other European partners, funded by the European Commission (H2020). The successful candidate will join the Distributed AI (DAI) group and the Trusted Autonomous Systems (TAS) Hub in the Department of Informatics, King’s College London.
The goal of Polifonia is to realise an ecosystem of computational methods and tools supporting discovery, extraction, encoding, interlinking, classification, exploration of, and access to, musical heritage knowledge on the Web. European musical heritage is a dynamic historical flow of experiences, leaving heterogeneous traces that are difficult to capture, connect, access, interpret, and valorise. Computing technologies have the potential to shed a light on this wealth of resources by extracting, materialising and linking new knowledge from heterogeneous sources, hence revealing facts and experiences from hidden voices of the past. Polifonia makes this happen by building novel ways of inspecting, representing, and interacting with digital content. Polifonia focuses on European Musical Heritage, intended as musical contents and artefacts - or music objects - (tunes, scores, melodies, notations, etc.) along with relevant knowledge about them such as: their links to tangible objects (theatres, conservatoires, churches, etc.), their cultural and historical contexts, opinions and stories told by people having diverse social and artistic roles (scholars, writers, musicians, politicians, journalists, etc), and facts expressed in different styles and disciplines (memoire, reportage, news, biographies, reviews), different languages (English, Italian, French, Spanish, and German), and across centuries.
The post holder will work closely with dr. Albert Meroño Peñuela, the co-investigator, and project partners at the Open University (dr. Enrico Daga) and the University of Bologna (prof. Valentina Presutti). The candidate will play a leading role in developing and testing, with a focus on European musical heritage: ontologies and KG for music objects; methods for KG construction, completion and linking; and methods for KG storage and access (APIs). The candidate will also support partners in designing ontologies and KG for musical contexts, licensing and ownership (i.e. provenance). The candidate is also expected to participate in the project pilots and scientific reporting (papers and deliverables).
