Hi all,
For all Hive users using stat1002/1004, you might have seen a deprecation
warning when you launch the hive client - that claims it's being replaced
with Beeline. The Beeline shell has always been available to use, but it
required supplying a database connection string every time, which was
pretty annoying. We now have a wrapper
<https://github.com/wikimedia/operations-puppet/blob/production/modules/role…>
script
setup to make this easier. The old Hive CLI will continue to exist, but we
encourage moving over to Beeline. You can use it by logging into the
stat1002/1004 boxes as usual, and launching `beeline`.
There is some documentation on this here:
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Cluster/Beeline.
If you run into any issues using this interface, please ping us on the
Analytics list or #wikimedia-analytics or file a bug on Phabricator
<http://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/analytics>.
(If you are wondering stat1004 whaaat - there should be an announcement
coming up about it soon!)
Best,
--Madhu :)
We’re glad to announce the release of an aggregate clickstream dataset extracted from English Wikipedia
http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.1305770 <http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.1305770>
This dataset contains counts of (referer, article) pairs aggregated from the HTTP request logs of English Wikipedia. This snapshot captures 22 million (referer, article) pairs from a total of 4 billion requests collected during the month of January 2015.
This data can be used for various purposes:
• determining the most frequent links people click on for a given article
• determining the most common links people followed to an article
• determining how much of the total traffic to an article clicked on a link in that article
• generating a Markov chain over English Wikipedia
We created a page on Meta for feedback and discussion about this release: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research_talk:Wikipedia_clickstream <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research_talk:Wikipedia_clickstream>

OpenSym 2016 General Call for Papers
====================================
OpenSym 2017, the 13th International Symposium on Open Collaboration
August 23-25, 2017 | Galway, Ireland
Conference Website: http://os2017.opensym.org
Call for Papers: http://opensym.lero.ie/cfp/
About the Conference
--------------------
The 13th International Symposium on Open Collaboration (OpenSym 2017)
is the premier conference on open collaboration research and practice,
including open source, open data, open science, open education, wikis
and related social media, Wikipedia, and IT-driven open innovation
research.
OpenSym is the first conference series to bring together the different
strands of open collaboration research and practice, seeking to create
synergies and inspire new collaborations between people from computer
science, information science, social science, humanities, and everyone
interested in understanding open collaboration and how it is changing
the world.
This year’s conference will be held in Galway, Ireland, on August
23-25, 2017. A Doctoral Symposium will take place on August 22, 2017.
OpenSym is held in-cooperation with ACM SIGWEB and ACM SIGSOFT and the
conference proceedings will be archived in the ACM digital library
like all prior editions.
The research paper submission deadline is April 07, 2017.
Submission Information and Instructions
---------------------------------------
Topics: The conference provides peer-reviewed research tracks on
subjects related to open collaboration including:
- Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS)
- Open Data and Open Science
- Open Education
- IT-Driven Open Innovation
- Open Collaboration Research, esp. Wikis and Social Media
- Open Policy/Open Government
- Wikipedia and Wikimedia Research
Paper Presentation: OpenSym 2017 will be organized as a one track
conference in order to emphasize the interdisciplinary character of
this conference and to encourage discussion.
Submission Deadline: The research paper submission deadline is April
7th 2017. Submitted papers should present integrative reviews or
original reports of substantive new work: theoretical, empirical,
and/or in the design, development and/or deployment of novel concepts,
systems, and mechanisms. Research papers will be reviewed to meet
rigorous academic standards of publication. Papers will be reviewed
for relevance, conceptual quality, innovation and clarity of
presentation.
Paper Length: There is no minimum or maximum length for submitted
papers. Rather, reviewers will be instructed to weigh the contribution
of a paper relative to its length. Papers should report research
thoroughly but succinctly: brevity is a virtue. A typical length of a
“long research paper” is 10 pages (formerly the maximum length limit
and the limit on OpenSym tracks), but may be shorter if the
contribution can be described and supported in fewer pages— shorter,
more focused papers (called “short research papers” previously) are
encouraged and will be reviewed like any other paper. While we will
review papers longer than 10 pages, the contribution must warrant the
extra length. Reviewers will be instructed to reject papers whose
length is incommensurate with the size of their contribution. Papers
should be formatted in ACM SIGCHI paper format. Reviewing is not
double-blind so manuscripts do not need to be anonymized.
Posters: As in previous years, OpenSym will also be hosting a poster
session at the conference. To propose a poster, authors should submit
an extended abstract (not more than 4 pages) describing the content of
the poster which will be published in a non-archival companion
proceedings to the conference. Posters should use the ACM SIGCHI
templates for extended abstracts. An example of a poster abstract can
be found here. Reviewing is not double-blind so abstracts do not need
to be anonymized.
Paper Proceedings: OpenSym is held in-cooperation with ACM SIGWEB and
ACM SIGSOFT and the conference proceedings will be archived in the ACM
digital library like all prior editions. OpenSym seeks to accommodate
the needs of the different research disciplines it draws on including
disciplines with archival conference proceedings and disciplines where
authors usually present at conferences and publish later. Authors,
whose submitted papers have been accepted for presentation at the
conference have a choice of (1) having their paper become part of the
official proceedings, archived in the ACM Digital Library or (2)
having no publication record at all but only the presentation at the
conference.
Response from authors: For the first time at OpenSym, authors will be
given the opportunity to write a response to their reviews before
final decisions are made. This should be treated as an opportunity to
correct any mistakes or misconceptions in the reviews as well as to
propose minor changes that the authors can make during the two weeks
between notification and the camera-ready deadline.
Important Dates
---------------
- Submission deadline: April 07, 2017
- Reviews sent to authors: June 02, 2017
- Response to reviews from authors due: June 30, 2017
- Decision notification: July 07, 2017
- Camera-ready papers due: July 21, 2017
Conference Organization
-----------------------
The general chair of the conference is Lorraine Morgan, Lero (the
Irish Software Research Centre) and Whitaker Institute, NUI
Galway. Feel free to contact us with any questions you might have at
info(a)opensym.org.
The program co-chairs are Claudia Müller-Birn (Freie Universität
Berlin) and Benjamin Mako Hill (University of Washington).

Hello,
I am looking for research on how editors transition through various levels
of involvement in their time as editors. The questions I ask myself are:
- How many people to come each month?
- How many editors leave?
…those are not too difficult to answer but…
- How many people become more involved over time? E.g. How many each month
come to a level where they are interested in handling many pages on the
watchlist, learn the less obvious aspects of wiki culture etc.
In my work as designer I am often involved in features for intermediate
and/or very involved users and I’m wondering if there are any ballpark
estimates of how many people learn these features each month.

Hoi,
A student is going to start some work on Wikidata quality based on a model
of quality that is imho seriously suspect. It is item based and assumes
that the more interwiki links there are, the more statements there are and
the more references there are, the item will be of a higher quality.
I did protest against this approach and I did call into question that this
work will help us achieve better quality at Wikidata. I did indicate what
we should do to approach quality at Wikidata and I was indignantly told
that research shows that I am wrong.
The research is about Wikipedia not Wikidata and the paper quoted does not
mention Wikidata at all. As far as I am concerned we have been quite happy
to only see English Wikipedia based research and consequently I doubt there
is Wikimedia based research that is truly applicable.
At a previous time a student started work on a quality project for
Wikidata; comparisons were to be made with external sources so that we
could deduce quality. The student finished his or her research, I assume
wrote a paper and left us with no working functionality. It is left at
that. So the model were a student can do vital work for Wikidata is also
very much in doubt.
I wrote in an e-mail to user:Epochfail:
Hoi,
You refer to a publication, the basis for quality and it is NOT about
Wikidata but about Wikipedia. What is discussed is quality for Wikidata
where other assumptions are needed. My point to data is that its quality is
in the connections that are made.
To some extend Wikidata reflects Wikipedia but not one Wikipedia, all
Wikipedias. In addition there is a large and growing set of data with no
links to Wikipedia or any of the other Wikimedia projects.
When you consider the current dataset, there are hardly any relevant
sources. They do exist by inference - items based on Wikipedia are likely
to have a source - items on an award are documented on the official website
for the award - etc.
Quality is therefore in statements being the same on items that are
identified as such.
When you consider Wikidata, it often has more items relating to a
university, an award than a Wikipedia does and often it does not link to
items representing articles in a specific Wikipedia. When you consider this
alone you have actionable difference of at least 2%.
Sure enough plenty of scope of looking at Wikidata in its own context and
NOT quoting studies that have nothing to do with Wikidata.
Thanks,
GerardM
My question to both researchers and Wikidata people is: Why would this
Wikipedia model for quality apply to Wikidata? What research is it based
on, is that research applicable and to what extend? Will the alternative
approach to quality for WIKIDATA not provide us with more and better
quality that will also be of relevance to Wikipedia quality?
Thanks,
GerardM
Hi Jan,
During my PhD, I did some research about how online uses evolve/develop
over time in online communities using topic modeling / clustering. Topic
modeling / mixture models are very powerful tools to learn the hidden
knowledge and structures underlying the data.
These two papers may be what you are looking for:
1. Xiangju Qin, Pádraig Cunningham, Michael Salter-Townshend. “Online
Trans-dimensional Von Mises-Fisher Mixture Models for User Profiles”.
Journal of Machine Learning Research, 17(200): 1-51, 2016.
http://www.jmlr.org/papers/volume17/15-454/source/15-454.pdf
2. Xiangju Qin, Derek Greene, Pádraig Cunningham. “A Latent Space Analysis
of Editor Lifecycles in Wikipedia”. In: M. Atzmueller et al. (eds): MSM,
MUSE, SenseML 2014. LNAI 9546, pp. 46–69, 2016.
http://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-319-29009-6_3
A minus point of these two papers is that we didn't consider user activity
in a very specific/niched level that you just described. Yes, considering
user activity in these context would shape more insights about the
potential challenges underlying Wikipedia platform (e.g. lost of different
types of editors, changes in edits to different Wiki pages over time)
Hope this helpful.
Best, Xiangju
