==========================================================
MOTIVATION
==================
With distributed information systems and the Internet continually increasing in
significance, collaboratively creating and managing information has become an
essential requirement for the success of
(virtual) organizations. This situation has led to a plethora of platforms
supporting cooperation as well as joint information
access among geographically dispersed user communities that have emerged in the
last decades: collaborative information spaces,
tele-cooperation, autonomous agents or, more recently, various Web-related forms
of communication and cooperation such as
discussion forums, community portals, Wikis and blogs.
A fundamental requirement for an effective collaboration is the availability of
technologies and tools which provide an explicit and unambiguous representation
of the shared information and a feasible management of such semantics-enhanced
information repositories. The emergence of the Semantic Web has marked an
important stage in the evolution of semantic technologies. In this context the
knowledge components i.e. ontologies are
formalized using Web-suitable, but in the same time semantically unambiguous
representation languages, are accessible and can
be shared and reused across the World Wide Web.
The Semantic Web offers new opportunities for the next generation of
collaborative applications: it provides us with novel means to classify
information items i.e. by means of ontologies which formally represent the
consensual understanding of the application users w.r.t. a particular domain of
interest. Taking advantage of this technology, the first promising
implementations of Semantic Web-based collaboration platforms such as Semantic
Web portals, semantic Wikis and blogs, to name only a few, have been proposed.
This workshop aims at contributing to this young application field by providing
a forum for practitioners and researchers to present innovative approaches to
applying Semantic Web technologies in collaborative environments and to discuss
the opportunities and challenges related to this topic.
OBJECTIVES
================
The primary objective of this workshop is to gather researchers and
practitioners working in different emerging aspects of semantics-enabled
collaboration, ranging from discovering new application scenarios, proposing
new methods to apply Semantic Web and related emerging technologies to current
environments, pointing out issues that still need to be solved, and reporting
results and experiences gained during the deployment of collaborative methods
and the realization of support systems.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
=================
We invite original academic and industry contributions which report on issues
related to semantic collaboration. Topics of interest include but are not
limited to:
-- Methodologies for collaboratively creating and managing shared information
-- Collaborative ontology engineering
-- Semantic collaboration applications
-- Collaborative Semantic Web portals
-- Semantic community support systems
-- Semantic Wikis
-- Semantic Blogging
-- Semantic Mindmapping and Conceptmapping
-- Case studies, lessons learned and experience reports on semantics-aware
collaborative applications
-- Studies on the value added to collaboration by semantic technologies
-- Future research directions in the area of semantic collaboration

Hi
I just read at wiki-standards(a)wikisym.org about the
http://recentchangescamp.org/ (Feb 3 thru Feb 5, 2006) - it was not a
real scientific conference but relevant if you are interested in the big
picture of social changes, wiki practise in general etc. You should have
a look at it!

CALL FOR PAPERS
SemWiki2006
1th Workshop: 'From Wiki to Semantics'
http://semwiki.org
co-located with the 3rd Annual
European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC)
[http://www.eswc2006.org/]
Budva, Montenegro
11th - 14th June, 2006
=== Executive Summary ===
SemWiki2006 is the first workshop on Semantic Wikis. It aims to
explore and collect the different ideas and motivations that have
lead to the recent emergence of so-called "Semantic Wiki" systems.
=== Workshop Topics ===
Semantic Wikis try to combine the strengths of Semantic Web
(machine processable, data integration, complex queries) and Wiki
(easy to use and contribute, strongly interconnected,
collaborativeness) technologies. Goals are diverse and include:
o simple annotations of existing Wiki content;
o tools that guide users from informal knowledge contained in
texts to more formal structures;
o full-fledged tools for ontology editing where the text is no
longer in the focus of the system.
In the future, Semantic Wiki systems might play an important role
for "knowledge acquisition", enabling non-technical users to
contribute to the Semantic Web.
=== Important Dates (all dates GMT) ===
o Abstract submission
for papers, poster, demo, position papers: 7 March 2006
o Full submission
for papers, poster, demo, position papers: 28 March 2006
o Notification to authors: 20 April 2006
o Camera-ready version: 30 April 2006
o Workshop in Budva, Montenegro, half-day: 11/12th June 2006
The workshop will be held as a half-day workshop at the European
Semantic Web Conference on the 11th or 12th of June in Budva,
Montenegro.
=== Call for Contributions ===
We invite submissions as full and short papers, as well as
posters/demos. Papers should describe original, unpublished
research and must not be under review by another conference,
journal, or workshop. Authors of the highest quality contributions
will be invited to present their work at the workshop (probably 20
minutes). Since Semantic Wikis are a very practical topic, we are
also very interested in poster and demo submissions. Posters and
Demos should describe prototypical implementations of systems
related to the workshop topics. Highest quality submissions will
be presented in a separete poster/demo session. Contributions
should adhere to the following formats:
o Papers 5-15 pages, LNCS
o Posters/Demos 2-5 pages, LNCS
o Short/Position Papers: 2-5 pages, LNCS
In this workshop, we will explore a new form of publication, the
so-called "ABCDE "-format. This format has been proposed recently
by User:Anita de Waard (Elsevier) and allows authors to annotate
their articles directly with semantic markup. This semantic markup
will be used in the electronic workshops proceedings to facilitate
searching and browsing. A specialised Latex template will be
provided by the workshop organisers that allows to easily add
these annotations. You can start using the Springer LNCS template
and later switch to LNCS-ABCDEF (which will be published on this
website).
=== Publication ===
Pre-proceedings will appear at the time of the conference online
and in print.
=== Topics of Interest (include but are not limited to) ===

* Wikipedia's Heritage: Vision, Pragmatics, and Happenstance -
moving on from my earlier consideration of print publishers in
Four Short Stories about the Reference Work, I consider recent
digital encycopedic works:
This essay explores development of globally available digital
reference works from their first imaginings to contemporary cases.
My hope in undertaking such a project is to identify technical and
social aspects of digital reference work production that can
contribute to an understanding of a prominent contemporary
exemplar, the Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia. Why did it
take over 50 years for the vision of "[w]holly new forms of
encyclopedias" (Bush 1945: 8 to be realized? The answer,
presented in this essay, was that it required an alignment of a
coherent goal, technical practicality, and serendipity: vision,
pragmatics, and happenstance. ...
* Do as I do: leadership in the Wikipedia
In this paper I consider how notions of leadership operate in
collaborative on-line cultures. In particular, I consider the
seemingly paradoxical, or perhaps merely playful, juxtaposition of
informal tyrant-like titles (e.g., "Benevolent Dictator") in
otherwise seemingly egalitarian voluntary content production
communities such as the Wikipedia. To accomplish this, I first
introduce the Wikipedia as an open content community and review
existing literature on the role of leadership in such communities.
I then relate ethnographic and archival data on how leadership is
understood, performed, and discussed in the Wikipedia community. I
conclude by integrating concepts from existing literature and my
own findings into a theory of leadership and note other communities
and leaders against which this theory could be tested. ...
