Wiki-translation is a community for discussing the impact of the wikipedia phenomenon on the world of translation. It is a place for people who are interested in translation using a massively collaborative wiki paradigm. It is a place where we can exchange best practices and tools for collaborative translation, and learn how to use them to improve translation quality and productivity.
The community was started in the Fall of 2007, as a result of online and hallway discussions between the following people (in alphabetical order):
* Louise Brunette, Peter Cowen, Alain Désilets, Lucas Gonzalez, Louis-Philippe Huberdeau , S.J. Klein, Nelson Ko, Marc Laporte, Jérémie Leblanc, Thomasz Muldner, Cola Nahaboo, Kizu Naoko,Xavier de Pedro Puente, Sébastien Paquet.
The following is a sample of topics which are deemed relevant:
* Practices and tools for translating any wiki content, including but not limited to Wikipedia pages.
* Practices and tools for translating any content (wiki or not) which is open, constantly evolving and may never reach a final stable state.
* Practices and tools for translating any content using a wiki-like process. By that, we mean a process that presents many of the characteristics of wikis like: open, massively collaborative, asynchronous, loosely coordinated and controlled, volunteer-based, etc....
* Practices and tools for creating and using wiki-like dictionaries and resources (ex: Wikipedia, Wiktionary, OmegaWiki) for the purpose of translating any content (wiki or not).
* Research and development to make any of the above easier and more efficient.

Dear All,
we have finally finished a technical report describing in detail the
algorithms we use for the Wikipedia trust coloring (see
http://trust.cse.ucsc.edu/). The technical paper not only gives the
algorithms, but describes several ways to quantify notions of text trust for
the Wikipedia, and provides detailed quantiative results on the quality of
our coloring.

A new version of the Python parser in WikiXRay, along with improved documentation, can be found here:

Basically, I've developed two flavors: the standard for those people who want an alternative to other tools for processing Wikipedia's dumps (including the text table). The other version is for research purposes, It ignores the text itself and extracts instead useful info on the fly.
Both flavors use extended inserts (you can tune the size and num. of rows) and the --monitor mode calls a db access module to avoid timeout errors.
Further improvements (--skipnamespaces and --inject, this one should be very easy) are on the way.

I added Korrigan and Andrea separately because I am not sure that hey
are on the lists. I added MediaWiki list to ping interested
developers. Please, give your comments, suggestions etc. at wiki
research list (wiki-research-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org).
It looks like improving Cite extension is the simplest task from the
list [1]. French Wikipedia already has a working improvement [1] and
Andrea made another one (including easy to use interface) [2]. There
are, also, two bug reports: one for simple improving Cite [3] and one
for adding BibTex compatibility [4]. The first MW bug report is very
live, while the last one seems to be dead.
So, my question is: Is it possible to join efforts for making one good
extension which is needed to all WM projects?

As the topic of quality is frequently raised on this list, I would
like to point out some of our papers. Me and a colleague have
researched information quality in virtual communities, especially
assessing completeness and correctness.
While we have not worked on Wikipedia (We tested for example World66
and Wikitravel, wikis for travel information) the methodology we
used can easily be transferred to Wikipedia. We claim that it
captures the user perspective in a rigourous way.
The results of these studies were encouraging: virtual communities -
without monetary compensation - are capable of getting even with
comercially produced information products. An open question remains
about the required minimum activity for a virtual community to create
and maintain information of high quality.

Hi folks,
I am the lead author on two wiki research papers my group at the
University of Minnesota is publishing this fall.
The first focuses on Wikipedia:

* Abstract: Wikipedia’s brilliance and curse is that any user can edit
any of the encyclopedia entries. We introduce the notion of the impact
of an edit, measured by the number of times the edited version is
viewed. Using several datasets, including recent logs of all article
views, we show that an overwhelming majority of the viewed words were
written by frequent editors and that this majority is increasing.
Similarly, using the same impact measure, we show that the probability
of a typical article view being damaged is small but increasing, and we
present empirically grounded classes of damage. Finally, we make policy
recommendations for Wikipedia and other wikis in light of these findings.
The second is not Wikipedia-focused, and as such not really on topic for
this list, but as I'm already sending a mail, I thought I'd include it.

* Abstract: The bicycling community is focused around a real-world
activity - navigating a bicycle - which requires planning within a
complex and ever-changing space. While all the knowledge needed to find
good routes exists, it is highly distributed. We show, using the results
of surveys and interviews, that cyclists need a comprehensive,
up-to-date, and personalized information resource. We introduce the
personalized geowiki, a new type of wiki which meets these requirements,
and we formalize the notion of geowiki. Finally, we state some general
prerequisites for wiki contribution and show that they are met by cyclists.

I don't know if there's anyone within Wikimedia doing any kind of
research like this, but it might be interesting if we had someone
attending this to see if there's anything that we could use to improve
our own image search techniques.
I recall we had a bot at one stage on Commons that would grab the
local captions of images used in various projects and then put those
captions back on the Commons image page. Seems a bit the same :)

Scope
The number of digital images being generated, stored, managed and shared
through the internet is growing at a phenomenal rate. Press and photo
agencies receive and manage thousands or millions of images per day and
end-users (e.g. amateur reporters) can easily participate into the related
professional workflows. In an environment of approximately one billion
photos, searchable in online databases worldwide, finding the most
relevant or the most appealing image for a given task (e.g. to illustrate a
story) has become an extremely difficult process. In these huge
repositories, many images have additional information coming from different
sources.
Information related to the image capture such as date, location, camera
settings or name of photographer is often available from the digital camera
used to take the photograph. The owner can further add a relevant title,
filename or/and descriptive caption or any other textual reference. If the
image is uploaded to a shared photo collection, additional comments are
frequently added to the image by other users. On the other hand, images
used in documents, i.e. web pages, frequently have captions and surrounding
text. All this information can be considered image metadata and is of value
for organizing, sharing, and processing images.
However, it is not always evident how to exploit the information contained
in such metadata in an intelligent, generic or task-specific way. Linking
this information with the actual image content is still an open challenge.
The aim of this workshop is to offer a meeting opportunity for researchers,
content providers and related user-service providers to elaborate on the
needs and practices of digital image management, to share ideas that will
point to new directions on using metadata for image understanding and to
demonstrate related technology representative of the state of the art and
beyond.
Research paper topics that may be addressed include, but are not limited to:
- image metadata pattern discovery and mining
- interaction of image metadata and visual content
- image and video metadata enrichment
- automatic metadata creation
- hybrid collaborative and machine learning techniques for metadata
creation and/or fusion
- cross image-text categorization and retrieval
- image auto-captioning and annotation transfer
- learning user preferences, aesthetical and emotional measures from
opinion mining
- integration of camera settings with image categorization, retrieval or
enhancement
- application-specific issues of metadata mining:
integration of visual and geo-location information for improved virtual
tourism
