Hi all,
I am new to working with Wikipedia dumps. I am trying to obtain full
revision history of all the articles on Wikipedia. I downloaded
enwiki-20140707-pages-meta-history1.xml-*.7z
from https://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwiki/20140707/. However, by looking at
the xml files revision history of individual articles do not match with
revision history one may see from history page on Wikipedia website. It
seems the dump contains significantly smaller number of revisions than what
can be found on Wikipedia.
Anyone has an experienced this? Am I downloading the wrong files?
Best,
Behzad

Dear colleagues,
I am looking for a scientific definition of a wiki, and several works
that actually deal a lot about wikis have let me down. Do you know
where to look, or is there an authoritative definition anywhere?

Sadly, no follow ups at the moment.
If we want to have a more precise sense of the demographics of participants
the biggest need in this space is simply higher quality survey data. My
paper with Mako has a lot of detail about why the 2008 editor survey (and
all subsequent editor surveys, to my knowledge) has some profound
limitations.
The identification and estimation of the effects of particular causes and
mechanisms that drive the gender gap (and related participation gaps)
presents an even tougher challenge for researchers and is an area of active
inquiry.
all the best,
Aaron

The MediaWiki Core team has opened a discussion about getting more

point is to understand how folks use the dumps already or want to use

I've added some notes but please go weigh in. Don't be shy about what

CICM 2015
13-17 July 2015
Washington DC, USA
Digital and computational solutions are becoming the prevalent means for the
generation, communication, processing, storage and curation of mathematical
information. Separate communities have developed to investigate and build
computer based systems for computer algebra, automated deduction, and
mathematical publishing as well as novel user interfaces. While all of these
systems excel in their own right, their integration can lead to synergies
offering significant added value. The Conference on Intelligent Computer
Mathematics (CICM) offers a venue for discussing and developing solutions
to the great challenges posed by the integration of these diverse areas.
CICM has been held annually as a joint meeting since 2008, co-locating
related conferences and workshops to advance work in these
subjects. Previous meetings have been held in Birmingham (UK 2008),
Grand Bend (Canada 2009), Paris (France 2010), Bertinoro (Italy 2011),
Bremen (Germany 2012), Bath (UK 2013), and Coimbra (Portugal 2014).
This is a (short version of the) call for papers for CICM 2015, which
will be held in Washington, D.C., 13-17 July 2015.
The full version of the CFP is available from the conference web page at

Subject: Re: [Gendergap] Wikipedia readers
To: "Addressing gender equity and exploring ways to increase the
participation of women within Wikimedia projects." <

In 2013 the Dutch Wikimedia chapter hired an external party to conduct a
survey and the results (translated to English) are here:
https://nl.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bestand:Motivaction_report_translation_v02.pdf
The study was split into two parts; one on the contributors and one on the
"users", aka readers. Users were 50/50 male female (page 51), contributors
were 88% male, 6% female, and 6% would not say (page 26)

I am thrilled to announce our speaker lineup for this month’s research showcase <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Analytics/Research_and_Data/Showcase#Februar…>.
Our own Haitham Shammaa will present results from the Global South survey. We also invited Stamen’s Alan McConchie, an OpenStreetMap expert, to talk about the challenges the OSM community is facing with external data imports.
The showcase will be recorded and publicly streamed at 11.30 PT on Wednesday, February 18 (livestream link will follow). We’ll hold a discussion and take questions from remote participants via the Wikimedia Research IRC channel (#wikimedia-research <http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikimedia-research> on freenode).
Looking forward to seeing you there.

Global South User Survey 2014
By Haitham Shammaa <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:HaithamS_(WMF)>
Users' trends in the Global South have significantly changed over the past two years, and given the increase in interest in Global South communities and their activities, we wanted this survey to focus on understanding the statistics and needs of our users (both readers, and editors) in the regions listed in the WMF's New Global South Strategy <https://m.mediawiki.org/wiki/File:WMF%27s_New_Global_South_Strategy.pdf>. This survey aims to provide a better understanding of the specific needs of local user communities in the Global South, as well as provide data that supports product and program development decision making process.
Ingesting Open Geodata: Observations from OpenStreetMap
By Alan McConchie <http://stamen.com/studio/alan>
As Wikidata grapples with the challenges of ingesting external data sources such as Freebase, what lessons can we learn from other open knowledge projects that have had similar experiences? OpenStreetMap, often called "The Wikipedia of Maps", is a crowdsourced geospatial data project covering the entire world. Since the earliest years of the project, OSM has combined user contributions with existing data imported from external sources. Within the OSM community, these imports have been controversial; some core OSM contributors complain that imported data is lower quality than user-contributed data, or that it discourages the growth of local mapping communities. In this talk, I'll review the history of data imports in OSM, and describe how OSM's best-practices have evolved over time in response to these critiques.
*FLOSS4P2P: Call for Participation*
A 2-day London workshop in March, gathering *FLOSS projects* that are
building software for *peer production and organization*, with a focus on
*distributed* platforms. *Scholarships* to attend are offered to grassroots
communities.
** Context **
We know that the Internet was originally decentralized, with protocols and
services built by hackers. However, with the arrival of the celebrated Web
2.0, centralization and corporations proprietary platforms seem to have
taken over. Moreover, this centralized structure is used by governments to
increase surveillance (following Snowden’s revelations), to blackout
internet whenever it is needed (e.g. Egypt, Syria, or San Francisco’s BART)
or to choke annoying activist organizations (such as Wikileaks).
On the other hand, in the last few years we have seen the emergence of
Internet-enabled collaborative communities building shared libre/open
resources. Commons-based Peer to Peer Production (CBPP) is rapidly growing:
not just for software and encyclopedias, but also for information
(OpenStreetMap, Wikihow), hardware (FabLabs, Open Source Ecology),
accommodation (Couchsurfing) and currency (Bitcoin, Altcoins).
In the last few years, it has become clear to many that it is not enough to
develop free/libre/open source (FLOSS) alternatives, but we also need
to re-decentralize
the Internet. Many initiatives are being undertaken under this premise
(e.g. Ethereum, Diaspora, OwnCloud, MediaGoblin, Sandstorm). These new
software tools may also be useful to boost CBPP communities further. In
this workshop, we will gather those working around the decentralized FLOSS
that could help CBPP/P2P communities. Hackers, academics, activists and
interested stakeholders are welcome.
