Hi everyone,
Last year we asked for feedback about a large literature review we are currently conducting on peer-reviewed studies on Wikipedia. We thank everyone who gave us comments and pointers, and we have carefully listened to everything. We're glad to mention that we've joined forces with Finn Årup Nielsen, and so we'll be fully merging our review into his (his latest working paper is available at
http://www2.imm.dtu.dk/pubdb/views/edoc_download.php/6012/pdf/imm6012.pdf).
In the next week or so we expect to release the main dataset of our extraction to a public SMW wiki for comments and feedback before we proceed with further analysis. However, we have two questions to clarify about how to release our data. I'll be posting them in two distinct threads for more organized responses. Here I'll ask a question about posting published abstracts, and in a separate posting I'll ask about license.
We would really love to put up all the abstracts of the articles that we post (and indeed have already done so on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:ACST), but I recently encountered the following article which basically argues that mass posting of abstracts is not justifiable as fair use, at least in the context of Wikipedia:
http://journalology.blogspot.com/2010/05/why-you-cant-copy-abstracts-into.h…
We don't think this argument necessarily applies to websites that list abstracts (for example, PubMed and Medeley published thousands of abstracts), but we would really liketo hear the community's comments on whether posting copyrighted abstracts (in our case, over 400) generally qualifies as fair use.

Chitu

Hi everyone,
As I mentioned in a separate thread, in the week or so we expect to release the main dataset of our extraction to a SMW wiki for comments and feedback before we proceed with further analysis. We're not planning to set up a permanent, dynamic website; we just want to post our data, get communal feedback to clean it up, and then eventually export the data to relevant long-term sites like AcaWiki, Brede Wiki and WikiPapers.
We are wondering how to license our site. We are naturally inclined to CC-BY-SA, like Wikipedia (and also Brede Wiki and WikiPapers), but we noticed that AcaWiki, one of our main export targets, is licensed CC-BY, which cannot use CC-BY-SA material. We like CC-BY-SA because it keeps derivatives free for communal reuse; however, we recognize that CC-BY is more flexible, since it permits publishing derivatives in journals that require full copyright transfer. (Of course, this is talking about copyright and copyright transfer; the CC-BY and academic standards against plagiarism would require attribution of the source, which is not the issue here.)
Perhaps we should be asking this question on an AcaWiki forum, but we'd like to hear thoughts on licensing considerations for sites that publish academic summaries and specific recommendations for our upcoming data release.
Regards,
Chitu

From: Sandra Cortesi
Dear Friends,
It is our great pleasure to share with you the announcement of a new
report from the Youth and Media Team on "Youth and Digital Media: From
Credibility to Information Quality." Thank you to our Youth and Media
team and members of the Berkman faculty, staff, and broader network
for their terrific contributions to this paper and our ongoing work.
More information and the full announcement is below. We invite you to
share this report widely with colleagues, students, friends, and
others who may have an interest in this area, and we welcome your
feedback and questions.
==============
The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is
pleased to share a substantial new report from the Youth and Media
project: "Youth and Digital Media: From Credibility to Information
Quality" by Urs Gasser, Sandra Cortesi, Momin Malik, & Ashley Lee.
Building upon a process- and context-oriented information quality
framework, this paper seeks to map and explore what we know about the
ways in which young users of age 18 and under search for information
online, how they evaluate information, and how their related practices
of content creation, levels of new literacies, general digital media
usage, and social patterns affect these activities.
A review of selected literature at the intersection of digital media,
youth, and information quality—primarily works from library and
information science, sociology, education, and selected ethnographic
studies—reveals patterns in youth’s information-seeking behavior, but
also highlights the importance of contextual and demographic factors
both for search and evaluation. To access the full report and
additional material, please visit:
http://youthandmedia.org/infoquality
Key Findings:
1. Search shapes the quality of information that youth experience online.
2. Youth use cues and heuristics to evaluate quality, especially
visual and interactive elements.
3. Content creation and dissemination foster digital fluencies that
can feed back into search and evaluation behaviors.
4. Information skills acquired through personal and social activities
can benefit learning in the academic context.
"Youth and Digital Media: From Credibility to Information Quality"
lays the foundation and raises questions for further explorations in
this area. The report also encourages a public policy discussion on
youth, digital media, and information quality issues. We hope you will
take the time to review the report, to build upon it, and to share it
with interested colleagues and networks.
We wish to thank all of our wonderful collaborators at the Berkman
Center, our friends at the Harvard Law School Library, and the
participants of a workshop on information quality for their valuable
contributions and their important work in the field. The report builds
upon research enabled by generous grants from the John D. and
Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Robert R. McCormick
Foundation.
As always, we welcome your feedback.

===Introduction===
Recent recognition of Collaboratively Constructed Semantic Resources (CSRs) has
substantially contributed to the research in natural language processing (NLP).
The 3rd workshop "The People's Web meets NLP" invites both long and short papers
on various CSRs-related topics. Preference will be given to submissions on CSRs'
application to NLP tasks, which is the special interest of this workshop
edition. We also welcome tutorial-like submissions on using the software for
CSRs to facilitate their wide adoption by the NLP community.
Specific topics include but are not limited to:
* Using collaboratively constructed resources and the information mined from
them for NLP tasks (cf. Section "References"), such as word sense
disambiguation, semantic role labeling, information retrieval, text
categorization, information extraction, question answering, etc.;
* Mining social and collaborative content for constructing structured lexical
semantic resources, annotated corpora and the corresponding tools;
* Analyzing the structure of collaboratively constructed resources related to
their use in NLP;
* Computational linguistics studies of collaboratively constructed resources,
such as wiki-based platforms or folksonomies;
* Structural and semantic interoperability of collaboratively constructed
resources with conventional semantic resources and between themselves;
* Mining multilingual information from collaboratively constructed resources;
* Using special features of collaboratively constructed resources to create
novel resource types, for example revision-based corpora, simplified versions
of resources, etc.;
* Quality and reliability of collaboratively constructed lexical semantic
resources and annotated corpora;
* Hands-on practical knowledge on utilization of CSR APIs and tools or designing
crowdsourcing procedures for high quality outcomes.

Wikis offer an excellent environment for "future scholarly communication
and scientific publishing", don't you think so? We are looking forward
to your submissions! – Cheers, Christoph
Deadline extended: March 18
http://sepublica.mywikipaper.org/ – the future of scholarly
communication and scientific publishing
SePublica2012 an ESWC2012 <http://2012.eswc-conferences.org/> Workshop.
May 27 or 28 (exact day to be announced), Heraklion, Greece.
At Sepublica we want to explore the FUTURE OF SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION and
SCIENTIFIC PUBLISHING. As we are going through a transition between print
media and Web media, Sepublica aims to provide researchers with a venue in
which this future can be shaped. Consider research publications: Data sets
and code are essential elements of data intensive research, but these are
absent when the research is recorded and preserved by
way of a scholarly journal article. Or consider news reports: Governments
increasingly make public sector information available on the Web, and
reporters use it, but news reports very rarely contain fine-grained links
to such data sources. At Sepublica we will discuss and present new
ways of publishing, sharing, linking, and analyzing such scientific
resources as well as reasoning over the data to discover new links and
scientific insights.
Workshop Format
We are planning to have a full day workshop with two main sessions. During
the first part of the workshop accepted papers will be presented; the
second part of the workshop will address by means of focus groups two main
questions, namely “what do we want the future of scholarly communication to
be?” and “how could data be preserved and delivered in an interactive
manner over scholarly communications?”. These focus groups will be followed
by a panel discussion. As an outcome of these activities we will have a
communique that will be the editorial for the workshop proceedings,
Dates
* workshop papers submission deadline: March 18 (EXTENDED)
* workshop papers acceptance notification: April 1
* workshop papers camera ready: April 15
*Submission*
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sepublica2012
Research papers are limited to 12 pages and position papers to 5 pages. For
system/demo descriptions, a paper of minimum 2 pages, maximum 5 pages
should be submitted. Late-breaking news should be one page maximum. All
papers and system descriptions should be formatted according to the LNCS
format <http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0>.
We encourage the submission of semantic documents. LaTeX documents in
the LNCS format can, e.g., be annotated using SALT
(http://salt.semanticauthoring.org) or sTeX
(http://trac.kwarc.info/sTeX/). We also invite submissions in
XHTML+RDFa or in the format or YOUR semantic publishing tool.
However, to ensure a fair review procedure, authors must additionally
export them to PDF.
For submissions that are not in the LNCS PDF format, 400 words count as one
page. Submissions that exceed the page limit will be rejected without
review.
Depending on the number and quality of submissions, authors might be
invited to present their papers during a poster session.
The author list does not need to be anonymized, as we do not have a
double-blind review process in place.
Submissions will be peer reviewed by three independent reviewers;
late-breaking news get a light review w.r.t. their relevance by two
reviewers. Accepted papers have to be presented at the workshop (requires
registering for the ESWC conference and the workshop).
Issues to be addressed
- Representation:
- Formal representations of scientific data; ontologies for
scientific information
- What ontologies do we need for representing structural elements in
a document?
- How can we capture the semantics of rhetorical structures
in scholarly communication, and of hypotheses and scientific
evidence?
- Integration of quantitative and qualitative scientific information
- How could RDF(a) and ontologies be used to represent the knowledge
encoded in scientific documents and in general-interest media
publications?
- Connecting scientific publications with underlying research data
sets
- Technological Foundations:
- Ontology-based visualization of scientific data
-
- Provenance, quality, privacy and trust of scientific information
- Linked Data for dissemination and archiving of research results,
for collaboration and research networks, and for research assessment
-
- How could we realize a paper with an API? How could we have a
paper as a database, as a knowledge base?
- How is the paper an interface, gateway, to the web of data? How
could such and interface be delivered in a contextual manner?
Applications and Use Cases:
- Case studies on linked science, i.e., astronomy, biology,
environmental and socio-economic impacts of global warming, statistics,
environmental monitoring, cultural heritage, etc.
- Barriers to the acceptance of linked science solutions and strategies
to address these
- Legal, ethical and economic aspects of Linked Data in science
