Is the implementation a question of topography:
a) A question of manpower?
b) A question of computing power (aka money)?

Hi everbody,
According to my tests, the map server provides this formats:
- .jpeg / .png / .json / .pbf / .svg
Is this intended or should the formats for production be reduced to an
absolut minimum?
Regards, Olivier
Hi everybody,
I'm new in this list and would like to contribute to the documentation.
Question:
- Under which URLs will the localized maps bei published to the public?
- Is there somewhere a list of servers / dns-names used for the map
production?
Regards & Thanks
Oli
...with apologies for cross-posting.

Subject: Turn mapframe for English Wikipedia? We’re ready if you are
To: wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Cc: Deborah Tankersley <dtankersley(a)wikimedia.org>
In October 2017, English Wikipedia community members approved an RfC
requesting implementation of mapframe
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_15…>
[1]—a feature that enables contributors to easily display dynamic maps on
article pages. At the time, there was some question about whether
technical support for the maps service would be available long term, and
the Foundation asked that the community stand by. I’m writing now to say
that those questions have been answered, and a small team will be assigned
for routine maps maintenance.
So, unless we hear from the English Wikipedia community that the consensus
on adding mapframe has changed since last year’s RfC, we plan to move
forward in April 2018. You can read more about this plan and leave comments
on Village Pump [2]. If you foresee any issues, let us hear from you.
Otherwise,
happy mapping!

Just a quick heads up that I have added a few more fields to the
WikiCommons Maps template, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Map
They are all completely optional, so should make no difference to the
display of existing map pages; but I hope may usefully help capture
additional information, particularly for maps scanned from books.
The fields added are for: book title, volume, page, publication place,
book author (if different from the creator of the map), scan resolution,
and OSM zoom level.
I've also added options to give a wikidata item for the map set, book,
and book author; and an option to specify that the map has
georeferencing available that is external (ie not at Wikimaps Warper),
along with a URL for it.
Examples with some of these fields set can be found at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/…/Category:MC_map_migration_t… .
I hope with luck all the modifications are acceptable and fairly
unobtrusive, but I'm very open to discussion, as to whether anything
about any of them could be done better, or indeed not at all -- eg
better field names, better descriptions, better ways of recording the
information, etc, etc.
I have done my best also to supply translations for the new fields into
languages the template is translated into, but these should probably be
particularly checked, to make sure they read all right.
Hope that's all okay with everybody, best wishes -- James.

Subject: [Wikimania-program] Wikimania 2018 Call for Submissions
To: "Wikimania general list (open subscription)" <
wikimania-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, Wikimedia Mailing List <
wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>

Dear Wikimedia community,
We are pleased to announce that Wikimania 2018 is now accepting proposals
for workshops, discussions, presentations, or research posters to give
during the conference. To read the full instructions visit the event wiki
and click on the link provided there to make your proposal:
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions
The deadline for submissions is 23:59 UTC on *Sunday March 18, 2018*.
This is approximately 6 weeks away. Whether you are a community member of
one of the Wikimedia projects, or a fellow open content creator or
consumer, we welcome your proposal for a session.
*Theme*
This year, the conference will be taking place in Cape Town, South Africa,
where the organisers are giving this Wikimania a unique flavor — an
explicit theme based in African philosophy:
“Bridging knowledge gaps, the *ubuntu* way forward.”
Read more about this theme, why it was chosen, and what it means for the
conference program at the Wikimedia blog:
<https://blog.wikimedia.org/2018/02/05/wikimania-cape-town-ubuntu/>*
Throughout the conference program, this theme will be tightly held, but
loosely defined - in order to encourage a diverse range of responses to the
theme. It is our hope that this theme will give us the opportunity to
further our goal of creating the “sum of human knowledge”, by encouraging
greater diversity and inclusion in who participates and what we discuss at
Wikimania.
To learn more, and to make a proposal for the conference, please visit:
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions
Please forward this announcement to other lists and groups across the
Wikimedia movement.
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions>
We look forward to reading your submissions. Sincerely,
*Program committee co-chairs Emna Mizouni, Felix Nartey, and Liam Wyatt.*
