Finally: A black&white base layer

Hi Finally, I found some time to set up a base layer in greyscale. I did this by automatically converting the original mapnik style and all icons. http://picpaste.com/pics/mapbw.1287869339.png There are some caveats: the style is named osm.xml and refers to ./inc and ./style which contain different (i.e. b&w files) than the original mapnik. I don't know if this is incompatible to the way all the layers are bound into Tirex, please tell me so. The style can be found here (on willow): /home/kayd/workspace/parking/mapnik/bw-mapnik I'd very much like to see it included as a base layer here: http://toolserver.org/~osm/styles/ I'd like to hear about your opinion: would you rather like a b&w base layer that's identical to current mapnik, or should it omit most of the icons (shops, etc.)? Or is both needed? Main uses would be IMHO the bicycle overlay (which looks a bit lost with the colorful mapnik base layer) and similar layers. Kind regards, Kay

Reordering of styles on the rendering system

Hi all As mentioned before I moved all styles currently rendered to the p_osm repository [1]. Each style contains at least a CONTACT file with the toolserver-email-address of the creator. If you wish to place a LICENSE-file in the directory of your style, please mail me. Updates to a style need to be sent to this list (not necessarily patches but also complete folders to copy over) This is done to guarantee a stable running tirex. Old mapnik

Hi, I am trying to update my parking layer, as well to create (it really is about time) a b&w-style base layer (maybe more than one). I started by building from the existing official mapnik style. But the official mapnik style is now dependent on mapnik 0.7.1. I have not been able to determine the existing mapnik on nightshade, but is from 2008-08. Could you please update mapnik on nightshade (or suggest a different server) to the currently required version of mapnik, so that the official styles can be rendered? Thanks, Kay

PHP library for geographical entities

Hey, I'm looking for a PHP librarie that contains classes to represent geographical entities such as points, area's, routes, ect. It'd be used in the Maps extension to handle the logic between wikitext and mapping service JavaScript (and other output). I can go write this myself, but being able to use a library would be a lot more convenient. Anyone on this list know of such a library, or how I might find one? OSM-Gadget in german Wikipedia

FYI: Tiles rendering for Geohack

Hello, perhaps somebody see or feel that we have now a higher load on Server Ptolemy[1], the reason is that we render and deliver since 2 days the tiles for the small map inside german Geohack[2]. So we want try to reduce the load to openstreetmap.org servers and want to optimize our own rendering process. (In the moment we have a fallback to tiles from openstreetmap.org if we are not able to deliver tiles in 5 secondes.) The later plan is to go live with tools like the OSM-Gadget[3] for every user in the german Wikipedia (Without killing the OSM-Servers!!!). I hope we can do this step in nearly a month. PostgreSQL changes

If we stay with 8.3, this will only involve about 10 minutes downtime for the upgrade, and will be transparent to users. 8.3 is supported until February 2013, so there is no pressing need to upgrade. However, it might make sense to upgrade to a more recent version at the same time; either 8.4 or 9.0. This will require a dump and reload of all databases, so it will take a while to complete. As far as I know, there should be no (or very few) changes required to tools using the database. I don't have a strong opinion either way, although I think it makes sense to upgrade regularly rather than stay on the same version forever. Publishing Style-Files

Hi I was asked more then one time now, if the map-styles rendered on the toolserver are opensource and where to get them. I was not able to answer those questions definitely. To get this cleared I'd suggest the following: All styles hosted on ptolemy will get copied into the osm project's home dir and published into its svn repository [1]. This way we have control over style changes and have a known location to check for the sources. Having control over style modifications is a good thing in our shared environment, because that way we'll know why tirex won't start after a modification. Are there any objections against collecting all style files under the osm account and publishing them into the svn? Unwe which license would the style files stand? Status-Update

Hi During the last weeks a lot of things happened to the tile-toolserver server. There's still progress going on but I'd like to give you a short status update: ptolemy now uses tirex instead of renderd This change was done last weekend, mainly for performance reasons, but it also enlarged the number of tools that are available to manage the rendering server (batch render & co.) Comprehensive tutorials on how a new style can be added to the tileserver are tbd. ptolemy is now visible in the munin graphs Some statistics of munin are now available at <http://munin.toolserver.org/OSM/ptolemy/index.html> but there are still some old in (renderd) as well as some missing (postgres) and some corrupted (replication_delay2). I'm working on consolidating the list of munin plugins and fixing the bugs. fallback for default style The default style which is visible by default on <http://toolserver.org/~osm/styles/> is now using a fallback routine that makes the browser weitch to the osm.org tiles when our toolserver can't render the tiles quickly enough. At the moment there are lots of places where we don't have any tiles yet on the disk. Those areas need to be rendered completely out-of-nothing when a visitor first views that area. This fallback will help in making the period until we have a comprehensive set of pre-rendered tiles less painful for our visitors. Peter
