Thanks to everyone who's been offering ideas and thoughts in this
thread! Could we move to maps-l (cc'd)?
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/maps-l
I recently posted to maps-l about plans for the OSM tileserver that
Wikimedia is going to host:

Hi people,
This is a probing note to start discussing connecting geometries from the
Wikimaps project to the Wikimedia knowledge base.
If you are new to Wikimaps, have a look in
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimaps. We aim to bring old
maps to the Commons, georeference them and use for historical mapping in
the Open Historical Map environment.
Wikimaps has a preliminary workflow that can be tested, from Wikimedia
Commons to the Wikimaps Warper and further on to the iD editor in the Open
Historical Map sandbox. See
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimaps/Wikimaps_Tartu%E2%80%93H…
>From this point, we need to know how to advance. We would like to invite
you to discuss the options, and the properties for data concerning space,
time and change over time.
- Wikidata is ready as a structure to handle the cross-references of the
spatiotemporal data. Adding the geopolygon datatype is needed to complete
the tools.
- We are hoping Wikimaps will be a necessary use and test case.
- We want to gather experiences from describing places over time, how to
handle uncertain or imprecise information. Also, from a mappers point of
view, how to interpret & express information that is stated on a map.
- We can create a "spatiotemporal data" task force in Wikidata
Are you interested in taking part in this discussion?
I am cross-posting this to the Wikimedia maps-l and the OpenStreetMap
Historic lists. Let's find a way to discuss together!
Cheers,
Susanna Ånäs

Hi Bastien,
(answering the first email, should answer all your questions)

I like the interface a lot. The items should have a bit more information
like at least the identifier, that's the main use case.

Nice :-)

The database has the following fields
(https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database#Monuments_all):
* country
* lang
* id
* adm0
* adm1
* adm2
* adm3
* adm4
* name
* address
* municipality
* lat
* lon
* lat_int
* lon_int
* image
* commonscat
* source
* changed
* monument_article
* registrant_url
* monument_random
You can ask the api several things:
* sr<fieldname>=search a fieldname
* srwith<fieldname>=<boolean> to get only items where something is set
* srwithout<fieldname>=<boolean> to get only items where something is
not set
You can get it in different formats etc, see
http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/api/api.php for a bit more info

That's nice!
Maarten
Hi everyone,
We still lack a very important tool for Wiki Loves Monuments in
September: A web based map to easily find monuments.
We have the backend containing all the information: The monuments
database has 750.000+ items with geo information and this is accessible
as kml [1]. We just need a web based map interface to wrap around this
and is easy to use.
Some initial requirements:
* Easy, probably only a filter to show monuments with or without a photo
* Works in all participating countries
* Centers on a location useful for the user (ask browser?)
* Is available in multiple languages (translatewiki?)
* Works in standard browsers without any add ons
I've seen plenty of local tools over the years, but no tool that could
just be used be everyone. Who can help out here?
Maarten

FYI, the Limes Map is now integrated into a few articles copied into
the user namespace.

Barbara will do a talk about it at Wikimania, I can't be there in
person.

Hi all!
We are building an OpenLayers-based, time-variable interactive map of
ancient Roman military installations. A beta version is available on
Tool Labs[0].
I was asked to begin integrating the map into dewiki articles. As a
first step, a customized version of the map should be added to some
Limes-related articles copied to the user namespace for testing.
Obviously, I can't just add a script which adds custom HTML to the
DOM. However, the OSM plugin/extension/? which is used by the
Coordinate Template seems to do exactly that, so there must be a way to
do it.
How would I go about this?
Thanks,
Johannes
