No, that shouldn't be happening. It doesn't have <noedit>, so you should be permitted to edit it. And it explicitly permits reupload, so rotate bot for example wouldn't be affected. A strange error

Hi, I followed a link recently to <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:100_3508.JPG> which was a nominee in the 2007 POTY competition and has since been deleted because it was uploaded under another name. When I attempt to create the page, to add "#REDIRECT [[:Image:A_storm_at_Pors-Loubous.jpg]]", I get this message: ---------------- Permission error You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason: The name of the file you are uploading begins with PICT, DSC, image, ..., which is a non-descriptive name typically assigned automatically by digital cameras. Please choose a more descriptive name for your file. ----------------- So... this is kind of weird. Is it just a MediaWiki bug? It seems like this check should only happen when Image: pages are created by new uploads, as opposed to manual editing. Also I thought the "sensible filename" thing was a warning rather than an error. And "permission" is not too accurate for what type of error it is. Free in country of origin but not in US

This is a sort of meta-licensing issue. My understanding has always been that images appearing on Commons are supposed to be free in both their country of origin and in the US [1], since WMF is hosted in the US. The US approach to Berne and related international obligations is fairly simple to understand though in some cases it has some wacky implications. In general, the US says that a work is protected by copyright in the US if and only if a comparable work created by a US citizen and published in the US would be protected. Or in other words, all works published in treaty countries are treated as if they were the works of US citizens (with the exception that certain historical notice and registration provisions are waived). For the purposes of this discussion, I'm going to ignore some of the nuances regarding timing of treaty signatures and URAA reciprocity, which may modify the conclusions in particular cases but not the general gist. The philosophy behind the US implementation of Berne is an easy point of view to express, but it has some difficult implications. In particular, since the US does not honor the rule of the shorter term [2], an image may be subject to US copyright protection for longer (in some cases much longer) than it is subject to copyright protection in its country of origin. As enumerated in Commons:Licensing there are many countries were the copyright term on all or some works is shorter than the 70 years pma usually applied in the US, e.g. China, India, Italy, Japan, etc. This creates a question. Once an image's copyright expires in the country of origin should it be included in Commons even if it hasn't expired in the US yet? Working precedent on Commons often seems to say yes, though a strict reading of copyright law would seem to say no. In addition, there are substantial classes of images, including parts of Freedom of Panorama [3] in particular, where copyright law in other countries includes exemptions that have no corresponding exemption in US law. It appears that Commons routinely includes such images, even without considering whether a comparable image produced in the US would be free or not. In at least some cases, this suggests that foreign authors could use US courts to enforce copyright protections in the US even when there would be no comparable protection available to them in their country of origin. It seems to me that there are many images (and whole categories) where the only criteria for inclusion applied has been whether the image is free in the country of origin, without consideration to whether the work would also be free in the US. Or perhaps I am mistaken about this? "Wikis Take Manhattan"

It seems that a picture contest "Wikis Take Manhattan" has been approved by the Wikimedia Foundation and happened recently. However, looking at the related uploaded pictures on Commons (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wikis_Take_Manhattan…), i think there's many problems : * All the pictures have no source and date * Most of the pictures have no description * Many needs "Personnality right warning" * Many seems to be out of Commons scope ( see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Image:WSTM_Thre…) * Many are duplicated pictures In a general case, most of those pictures seem not to meet Commons criteria. Our categories are broken, very broken

I need a road sign. I figure there are a bunch of road signs on Commons, so since I am in Wikipedia, I go to the French page for a sign, hoping to swiftly follow the categories to get the the road sign I need. That's my starting point: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circulation_en_sens_unique I dare you to give me sensible a way to get here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:C6.svg ...if you don't speak English. (in the end, it so happens that the sign I was looking for seems not to exist in SVG, I'll make it, using... a google image I found in 2 seconds). How did we get into this mess? Is there a way to start changing this and making something that makes sense? Or is it simply hopeless? It's actually the second time in a few days that I have that problem. unprocessed deletion requests

Dear commoners Wikimedia Commons is known to be very strict on copyright. We are even stricter than most of the Wikimedias. So far so good. What surprises me a bit is that so many deletion requests never get processed once the debate is closed. I find unprocessed deletion requests as old as April 2008! http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/2008/04 OK this is an exception but also in May there are several unprocessed requests: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/2008/05 And when I look in June it seems that just a few of them have already been processed: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/2008/06 What's going on here?
