Someone in the thread on friendliness mentioned that categories are
always in one language (usually english). Well still a long way from
fixing the issue, perhaps if we allowed unrestricted
{{DISPLAYTITLE:...}}, combined with the {{int: hack, that'd allow
better translatable categories. (of course you'd only be able to use
the actual category name in [[category:Foo]] links. I suppose one
could use a bot to automatically change links to redirect categories
to their canonical name, but then we're getting really really hacky).
Anyways, just a thought.
cheers,

Hi all,
Erik Zachte has compiled some new statistics for Wikimedia Commons.
Previously, WikiStats primarily captured the standard metrics (editing
activity etc.). Since Commons is first and foremost about media, those
metrics weren't as useful to see trends in activity. You can see the
new numbers starting here:
http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikispecial/EN/TablesWikipediaCOMMONS.htm#upload…
.. and they should be reliably and automatically generated going
forward. There are also some new summary graphs:
http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikispecial/EN/SummaryCOMMONS.htm
Note that we can break out in both tables the impact of Upload Wizard.
The numbers show that the growth rate of Commons increased very
significantly after UW was enabled in May 2011. The number of
contributors grew by about 25% from March 2011 to March 2012, compared
with ~12% in the prior year.
The numbers also clearly show the impact of "Wiki Loves Monuments" in
terms of the number of uploaders -- in September 2011, 22642 people
uploaded at least one file to Commons, a huge jump from the previous
month (16869). The number of uploaders quickly returned to previous
levels, but it's fantastic to see that a single event can bring in so
many new people.
Erik's working on some additional stats, but I wanted to share this
date with you. He's also going to write a blog post about this new
data. Please report any oddities or inconsistencies directly to him.
I also want to give a shout-out to Bryan Tong Minh who's been
maintaining the incredibly useful commons-stats here:
https://toolserver.org/~bryan/stats/ - which previously were my
primary source of relevant data (and there are still some stats there
that don't exist anywhere else).
Cheers,
Erik

I was wondering if anyone knows of a iPhone app that makes uploading
images to the commons easy. I ran across mention of WikiSnaps but
couldn't really figure out what it's current state was. Is this a need
that other's have had, and found tools for?

Dear Wikimedians,
The final round for the 2011 Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year
contest is now open!
The 36 images were chosen from the first round, thanks to voters like
you. In order to determine the very best picture of the remaining
candidates, you have exactly one vote left.
The finalists are listed here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2011/Finalists.
If you are eligible, you can vote in the final even if you didn't vote
in the first round. Please visit here
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2011/Introduc…
for the detail. Final voting is open for about a week, so be sure to
get in quick!
Wikimedia Commons would be happy to see you vote for whatever image
you believe deserves to be called the Picture of the Year 2011.
Thanks,
Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Dear Commoners and Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons POTY committee is happy to announce that the 2011
Picture of the Year competition is now full open at last. We're
interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the
Picture of the Year for 2011 (not for 2012). Any user registered at
Commons or a Wikimedia wiki SUL-related to Commons with more than 75
edits before 1 April 2012 (UTC) is welcome to vote. Check your
eligibility now!
http://toolserver.org/~pathoschild/accounteligibility/?user=&wiki=&event=24
If you meet the criteria, you are eligible to vote.
For the detailed information of the contest is here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2011/Introduc…
Nearly 600 images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the
international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all
entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots
to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically
relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture,
maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and
impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories.
Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote
for as many images as you like. The first round the top 32 images , by
number of votes, from any category will go to the final round - the
categories are irrelevant when it comes to counting the votes. If no
picture of one topic category is not in the top 32s, that will be also
promoted to the Final to guarantee a diverse final. In the final
round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on
the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2011/Galleries
If javascript of your browser is active, our voting script will help
you to vote!
Wikimedia Commons is interested in hearing your opinions on our
featured images of 2011.
Thanks,
Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Upload Wizard currently inserts the altitude information from the EXIF
metadata, incorrectly, as the third parameter into the {{Location
dec}} template. It looks like the template doesn't support altitude
information at all.
We're inclined to remove it altogether unless there are good reasons
to keep it and a proper way to include it. Thoughts? There's no
reference to altitude info on
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Geocoding

My feeling (based only on personal experience and not data) is that
altitude is entirely useless to everybody taking pictures on the ground and
really interesting to everybody taking pictures from the air. I think most
people would never notice if we took it out, but those that want it (people
taking pictures from kites, hot air balloons, high-atmospheric balloons,
pilots, etc.) would be very sad.
Can we strip it from the upload wizard (to catch most ground-based
pictures) but add it to the template (so dedicated individuals can still
include it in a slightly structured way)?
