I need a road sign. I figure there are a bunch of road signs on
Commons, so since I am in Wikipedia, I go to the French page for a
sign, hoping to swiftly follow the categories to get the the road sign
I need.
That's my starting point:
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circulation_en_sens_unique
I dare you to give me sensible a way to get here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:C6.svg
...if you don't speak English.
(in the end, it so happens that the sign I was looking for seems not
to exist in SVG, I'll make it, using... a google image I found in 2
seconds).
How did we get into this mess?
Is there a way to start changing this and making something that makes sense?
Or is it simply hopeless?
It's actually the second time in a few days that I have that problem. Sad. :(

I'd suggest a questionnaire or a wizard-like sequence of questions and optional answers which results in suggestion of which license (if any!) best suits the author's will. I've seen something similar here: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/images/4/49/Choose_license_popup.png (accessible from here: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Web_Integration_Guide)
For instance:
* I declare I am the original author of the image. Y/N
** I allow commercial uses of my work. Y/N
** I allow modifications of my work. Y/N
*** I require attribution. Y/N
**** I require further distributions being released under the same conditions. Y/N
Good side is that people will make more informed decisions.
Bad side... this will reduce the number of uploads...

Dunno how good it is yet (compression, encoding CPU load, decoding CPU
load). VLC 0.9.2 apparently supports playback, dunno about encoding.

Hi all of you.
In the last months I recogniced more and more uploaders wanted their
Images to be deleted. In normal cases I delete on uploaders request, but
not if someone wants to have all his images / most of them deleted. This
is problematic, because all the Licenses we have are _unrevokable!_
Yesterday there was a user who clearly wants all of his Images yust to
have all his Images gone and after we opposed his CSD-request he yust
said "My father/sister/whatever took the Image, so its unfree" and we
had to delete them all.
I belive we should get a clear consenus about this. (For example
blocking in cases as above!?) Do you have any Ideas?
Regards,
ABF
I know one user who uploaded his images to Commons last year with CC-BY and
to Flickr with CC-BY-NC-ND. Last month he was blocked infinitely on Russian
Wikipedia and after it he changed sources on Commons' images from "Own work"
to Flickr and he wants to delete these images.

I've written a little tool [1] that shows file duplicates between a
wikipedia and Commons, as well as internal duplicates. It runs of a
static list created from the toolserver databases; currently, German
and English are available. I will have to regenerate the data for
other wikipedias and for updates manually.
But for now, there's ~29.000 dupes between en.wp and Commons, as well
as ~8.500 between de.wp and Commons, so it might take you guys a while
;-)
A subset (default:25) images is selected randomly from the list, so
you might run into images that already have {{NowCommons}}.
Cheers,
Magnus
