Hello all,
Hope you have been well! We have just released v5.1.0 of the Commons
Android app to production. The update is now available on Play store
(beta track) [1] and F-droid [2]. You could also build the app directly
from our GitHub repository [3].
This release includes the improved upload queue that was specified in
the previous release post. This was contributed by Kanahia during
Google Summer of Code 2024[4]! He was mentored by Nicolas and Ritika.
The new upload queue system ensures smoother, sequential processing and
better progress tracking. It also provides more flexibility with
managing your whole upload queue by allowing to pause / resume / cancel
all ongoing uploads.
With this enhancement, we have retired the "Limited Connection Mode".
However, the new upload queue's pause provides flexibility similar to
the old mode. We would love to hear any thoughts / concerns about this
change.
Other significant changes:
- Fixed an UI issue where the 'Subcategories' and 'Parent Categories'
tabs appeared blank in the Category Details screen. Resolved by
optimizing view binding handling in the parent fragments.
- Added an option in "Nearby" feature enabling users to provide feedback
on Wikidata items. Users can report if an item doesn’t exist, is at a
different location, or has other issues, with submissions tagged for
easy tracking and updates.
- Improved the "Nearby" feature by splitting the query into two parts
for faster loading and better performance, especially in areas with
dense amount of places. This update also resolves issues with pins
overlapping place names.
- Upgraded AGP and target/compile SDK to 34 and make necessary
adjustments to the app such as adding "Partial Access" support.
- Fixed an issue where editing depictions removed all other structured
data from images. Now, only depictions are updated, preserving other
associated data.
- Fixed map centering in the image upload flow to use GPS EXIF tag
location from pictures and ensured "Show in map app" accurately
reflects this location.
- Fixed navigation after uploading via Nearby by directing users to the
Uploads activity instead of returning to Nearby, preventing confusion
about needing to upload again.
These are only a small chunk of all the changes that were part of this
release. Checkout our release notes [3] for a more detailed set of
changes since the last announcement.

I just cleaned up a bit of moderation queue.
One thing to note: People sometimes send images as attachments. However, mailing list software has a default setting of 40KB size limit. If an email is larger than 40KB in total (either because too much HTML that exceeds 40KB (unlikely I think), full-res image attached, etc etc), it is held for admin approval.
However it takes a bit more than few weeks for me to review those queue. (I haven't talked to Steinsplitter (my fellow list-admin) for a while, so I don't know how active Steinsplitter is) So, my general advice is, just don't send an email with an attachment. I've left a note to that effect on list information page.

2024 photography campaign which took place on Wikimedia Commons from 1st
September 2024 to 30th September 2024. You can have a glimpse of the

uploaded into Wikimedia commons as part of this campaign. More than 100
participants contributed to this campaign and uploaded media files related
to Onam celebrations from around the world during this period.

Loves Africa

celebrate the richness, diversity and beauty of Africa by encouraging
participants and contributors to upload their media to Wikimedia Commons
for use on Wikipedia.
This year, Wiki Loves Africa called for images, video and audio that
reflected its 2024 theme of Africa Creates, which was especially chosen by
the community to celebrate 10 years since the contest first launched in
2014. The continent-wide call, and the many events organised by local
chapters and usergroups (whose continued support have been integral to
making this project a highlight in many African Wikimedian’s and
photographer’s calendars alike) resulted in a total

of 14,163 entries that were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by 796 media
specialists and photographers representing 45 countries

50% of whom were entirely new to the Wikimedia projects!
The competition ran from 1st March to 30th April. Then began the incredible
task of the volunteer reviewers and international jurors to sort through
thousands of entries and pick out the winners. The Wiki Loves Africa 2024
International Jury was made up of 15 professional photographers, filmmakers
and media specialists from Africa and international Wikimedians who are
Commons experts, to select the international winners.
It has been inspiring for the team of Wiki in Africa
<https://www.wikiinafrica.org/> to witness the creativity and work ethic of
media makers from across the continent in response to the theme, as well as
the enthusiasm of local organisers from Cape Town to Cairo. Wilson would
have been proud.

I'm an admin of the Wikimedia Commons Group
<https://www.flickr.com/groups/30009679@N00> on Flickr, a group that has,
up until now, had no moderation for numerous years. Given my uptick in
activity on Flickr (resulting from my uptick on Commons) I'm hoping to
change that.
Photographs in the group ought to be able to be readily able to be ported
to Commons, thereby having a free license. People who sign up for the group
agree to that rule. However, currently numerous people are just sharing
photographs that they share on numerous other groups for exposure.
I do not have the bandwidth to moderate completely on my own. Is anyone
else currently a regular Flickr user that would be willing and able to help
out?
